Chrono Trigger.

It is a game that has you playing Crono, who ends up getting thrown through time with his companions Marle and Lucca, and discovering that in year 1999, the world is destroyed by a world-parasite called Lavos. The three of them set out on an adventure through time, from 65,000,000 BC to 2300 AD to try and prevent the future destruction of humanity.

The game is one that offers a story that is not only accessible and easy to understand, but at the same time is complex and takes advantage of time travel as a story telling device. Numerous times through the game, you can find that your choices in the past effect things that happen in the future.

The game was among the first to offer many different endings, featuring 13-15 different, unique endings based on how you complete the ending. These endings can vary from a default good ending, to one in which humanity never existed because of the way you went about completing the game.

The storytelling is not directly linear, in which you are lead from place A to place B, nor totally unlinear. Instead, the game will offer you a puzzle to think out. Such as at one point, you are told that you cannot do something because you need something that hasn't been available for a very long time. It is up to you to put 2 and 2 together to figure out that you need to go back in time.

At no point do you have to stop and "grind" to get strong enough to defeat certain encounters. All boss encounters are based on strategy, rather than brute force. All regular monster encounters are engaged by in-world mobs, rather than random encounters like the early Final Fantasy.

The game has an unparalleled soundtrack. There is nothing else to say. It is absolutely beautiful, and it fits every aspect of the game perfectly to truly emphasize the feelings you're meant to get at each stage of the game.

It is "epic" in that you feel you've spanned huge times and done something great, and yet this story is told in 10-15 hours of gameplay. You are never strung on in a way that is irritating.

Ultimately, it remains a game that is truly perfection. I still play it to this day.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Star Wars Battlefront 1. Just such awesome communities for FPS games. A lot more chatter was heard in those games than any other I've played.

Europa Universalis 4 is such a great game too. Paradox in general just makes fucking outstanding games.

EQ is the best MMO I've played I would say. But to be honest, it more felt like an addiction than something I really loved. Now that I'm older and have a lot more game (and life) experience I just can't get hooked back on it like I used to. LOTRO has the best feel to a MMO though. Just wish the game mechanics worked differently.

Civ 3 was absolutely outstanding as well. Love that game. Can't play any other Civ since they just can't stack up.

I love that you can fight (and die) to the final boss fairly early in the game. It makes it a lot more interesting in repeat playthroughs when you use the new game+ option and fight the final boss at various different points in the game.

My list:

Diablo. (level 5 with the red bat scared the SHIT out of me)

Age of Empires franchise. (much LAN party fun)

Starcraft. (many lan party nights with IP games)

Everquest. (first month it's all I dreamed about... too many other reasons to list in short)

Lineage 2 - Beta. (Awesome game, stunning graphics, amazing classes. I say Beta because the asian bots made it obvious the game would not have been the success it could have been so never played live).

Dark Age of Camelot. Amazing PvP on versus servers, epic raid scene on coop server. Nothing like 250 man raids where almost everyone walks away with loot, and guilds actually like working together.

Everquest 2 (pre Sony Store crap). It wasn't quite Everquest and wouldn't top it in my list, but it had at least 4 years of staying power for me. The introduction of RM items at the same time as the account security breach alerted me it was time to say goodbye to Norrath 2.0

Everquest Online Adventures. It was amazing, although the content was limited to one expansion (Odus, PoS, PoD, PoW). SoE finally took it down in 2012. I've never seen a community of players as dedicated to the game they played before or after EQOA. When the game's population started to dwindle, everyone banded together into one server on their own initiative to keep the game going.

It was beautiful.

hi im just here on a mission. my mission is to get EQOA back because its a major part of my life. lately without it life has been such a drag like its barely inching forward ,like i cant even function with out it. that is how my whole liife has been without EQOA for this past year. I'm depressed never want to do anything, flunked outta college, and feel like theres nothing special in my life anymore. when sony shut down the game i couldnt believe it was over with how hard we all tried to keep it up with our forum posts ,our emails, our youtube videos just all of it failed. yeah we got 3months of gold to EQ 1+2 but to us these games dont even compare they bored me horribly nothing will ever be like EQOA in the past year ive tried several MMORPGs and none of them can keep my interest like EQOA. i know its not just me who feels like this when sony gave us such a great game and ripped it away. it was my home and it got torn down. sony says they care about our opinions and will do anything for their customers then why didnt they keep EQOA up. it makes us feel like sony doesnt care and they have lost our respect because it was our home even in our home it was a second home. PLEASE sony try to open your hearts and bring EQOA back all the servers too because we had several homes Castle light wolf, Direns Hold, Hodstock, Ferrans Hope, Hagley, Marrs fist, i forget the last one but please find it in your hearts to bring back a great game and fantastic part of EQ history its part of a major timeline and needs to be kept. sony if you recognize this thankyou it means alot

Yup. My favorite is that if you wait for the point in the game when Lavos lands and begins to burrow into the planet in 65,000,000 BC, and you kill him while he is still on the surface. You prevent him from going into the core to build up, and so the humans do not win the war against the Reptites, as there is no Ice Age to bring about the death of the Reptites. Because of this, the future is entirely Reptite.

I further love that that reality was a central one to the story of Chrono Cross.

Yeah paradox games are so damn good. the europa series and victoria series are some of the best games ever for sure. Way better then civ games and its unfortunate that the civ series is more well known then paradox games. While I feel that the civ games arent "bad" games compared to games of other genres, they are inferior by far to paradox games and bad by comparison to most games in the genre. Civ is like the world of warcraft of 4x games in my opinion.

And that's my issue with most everything made in the last 5-10 years. These games BARELY are any different than the games from 15-20 years ago except they have fancier graphics and soundtracks.

I agree with you Tecmo's, a few developer's designed every type of game that we see now very early on. There has been very few breakthroughs in game design in 20 years.
I have an emu collection for Dreamcast, and I see all the early Japanese game developers had designed the major game play styles/views. Then everyone copied those.

I hope we get to play a Virtual Reality EQ at some point in our lives. So someone can become: Lawnmower Man!

The game will never get the attention it deserves because it's just too harsh in terms of grind and mechanics. HOwever, for people who like it anyway, the news needs to get out. I can't even start explaining how much of an impression this game had on me. Standing out in a clearing in a forest at night with a cart and danger all around and intrigue and being new and not knowing where you're going to go and no in-game map or radars... on a pvp server... for me it was bliss. Trees that actually stuck around and could be killed or replanted or become a different tree. A place where players really can have an impact on the world, especially on the PvP servers. The pvp serers relaxed a lot of hte rules common in other MMORPGs. No lvl limits... everything you had could be stolen. And back when I started this game was dirt cheap. It's still only about $21 for 2 months of premium. I know that doesn't include deeds, but I've never felt the need to make a deed so far.

I haven't played lately. I got turned off by some crashing. I log in occasionally to lower decay. I've lost several homes over time. The game is becoming less harsh, but it's the danger that's always been attractive to me. Can't explain why I'm that way. Maybe I'm a thrill seeker, but in RL I'm a coward, so how can I be a thrill seeker? I just like danger in games. The feeling I can lose everything. That's why I play on the pvp servers. That's why I played Wurm Online to begin with. I enjoyed the way the game was. It was unfriendly. I liked it.

I loved all three of them on my commodore 64. I actually still get the urge to play them now and again on my c64 emulator.

How about

Between the Pool Of Radiance series and The Bard's Tale series I was set for most of my childhood and early teens.

and there's a little-known and underrated SSI gem that's the precursor to the gold box series:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/45/Wizard%27s_Crown_Coverart.png

That's the one I recommend people play on a c64 emulator. The combat is surprisingly advanced for a 1985 game. I actually play that more than POR and The Bard's Tale.

Dues Ex1-2 for a good story. 3 suxxed a bit, but was still well done, with some pros, but 2 danb short and blunt. Could not overcome it's shortfalls.

Runners up? Got to admit in hindsight, Vanilla Wow > EQ, yet Classic EQ (1-50) was something special. Ultima VII. BG1-2.

Guess you could throw Oblivion in there somewhere cause I played the fuck out of it on xbox, than modded the fuck out of it on PC later and got countless hours out of it anyway. Morrowind never immersed me. Yes oblivions quests were dumb, but who cared? Skyrim never had the support to build a good community after TESNexus went 2 shit.

Super Metroid is easily one of the best games ever made. I can't even tell you the number of times I've played that one through start to finish. It's a mind bogglingly well made game.

Been gaming since Pong in the 70's.

Without a doubt, EverQuest.

Beyond that the hall of fame (just off the top of my head and in no particular order):

Myth and Myth 2
Ancient Art of War at Sea (amazing for its time)
Empire Earth (the peak of RTS games imo)
Empire Deluxe (amazing for it's time)
Marathon and Marathon 2
the Avalon Hill WW2 games circa '94 that could be played via email
Civilization and the first couple sequels
Warlords and Warlords 2. (first one caused me to rediscover gaming)
DAoC
Skyrim
GTA5
Assassin's Creed and sequels
Borderlands and Borderlands 2
Ghost Recon (the original is still my fav shooter to date but didn't like them since)
the first several Rainbow 6 games where you could automate the action and make it totally about planning assaults

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

I'm not surprised, but it's sad that more people haven't said this. VTM:B had such potential, nearly ruined by a rushed shoddy release (the fault of the publisher, not the devs). But with the fan made patches it's truely a great game with massive replayability. If anyone owns a copy you should really check out the latest patches by "wesp5", find them on planetvampire.com.

Other games I keep going back to, which must mean they're good in some way:

EQ (of course)
Final Fantasy 7 (yeah I'm not hardcore enough to like the earlier ones!)
Ocarina of TIme
Eternal Darkness
Halo (good for a bit of co-op with the wife, oo er missus)
Dark Souls

Howdy nerds :p

so whats the best game you have ever played?

So to Jeremy's point: Billards... I have a pool table right next to my gaming PC so I can play while camping shit.

Main Point:
RPG: Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, All Final Fantasy's, Dragon Warrior, Mystic Quest, Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire, Earthbound, sure I am missing a ton...

RTS: Age of Empires 2, Warcraft 3, Total Annihilation, Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Civilization, Populas?

FPS: Quake w/OPEN GL!, Quake 3, Counter Strike, Tribes, Unreal Tournament, Descent, Team Fortress, Team Fortress 2.

Basically every game everyone has played. But Favorite games of all time: EQ, WoW, Final Fantasy 2, Earthbound.

Probably my top 5 games in order:

Final Fantasy VII
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Everquest
King of Dragons

Categories (top 5 in order not including my all time favorites):

MMO: DAoC, WoW, Rift, Ragnarok, FFXIV
FPS: Counter Strike, Doom (SNES version), Golden Eye, CoD, Unreal
RPG: Chrono Trigger, Legend of Legaia, Diablo II, Legend of Mana, Lufia
RTS: Starcraft, Warcraft III, Lords of the Realm II, Rome: Total War, Starcraft II
Fighter: Street Fighter II, Mortal Combat, The Bouncer, Tekken, Soul Caliber

I know people may crucify my for not putting EQ first, but can't beat some SNES games. And if you haven't played King of Dragons, try it out, shit is awesome.
