The only thing I like about new MMO's is the thought of starting fresh and even with everyone.

New MMOs have "even" starts? Last I checked they all have early starts or beta characters rolling over into launch or other tangible benefits for people who were willing to gamble on a kickstarter or buy a pre-order or pay for cash shop items. ;)

I disagree. Imo a great, new drug will blow your socks off even if you've been using something else a lot and/or for a long time.

But new MMOs aren't great (or maybe even good); they're just new.

Can all of you honestly say that nothing has blown your socks off since your first MMO? EQ was my first, and yeah. OMFG. But WoW blew my socks off too, and I'm nostalgic about early wow (the content more than the mechanics) almost like with classic EQ. Eve blew my socks off too. A few other games were solid "good"s in my book... usually cause they'd have a few great features, but the overall game was mediocre at best (city of heroes, shadowbane are the ones I can think of atm, I didn't play DAOC or early SWG). And then basically everything else was "shitty" because even if there was a great feature or two, or a number of good features, the overall game was terrible (rushed releases and games not delivering on early promises being the biggest issues, probably).

I couldn't agree with you more. Vanilla WoW was just amazing, I mean it was the EQ killer pretty much... DAoC and SWG were a ton of fun at the beginning and just like other games after so many patches/upgrades, they just got ruined over time.

I hope one day we see the next big thing that is just amazing, however I feel for me that time is gone. EQ came out when I was a teenager, I relate to it as a kid growing up. Now that I am an adult, I will just never be able to invest the time into a new MMORPG like before I had a Wife/Kid. So I will never be able to make that strong of a connection to a game again.

But those starts aren't as bad as say Me coming into Red99 and being the only lowbie leveling up to 60 and not seeing anyone for zone upon zone of leveling and then dealing with the economy effects of those who benefited from things fixed in later patches and etc.

Good video highlighting the recent changes to combat and the first hour of gameplay. If you like ESO it's worth the 10 minutes.

Here's a few highlights pulled from the private test server patch notes specific to what I mentioned:

-Now after the tutorial completion, new characters will go directly to first alliance city where you will then have the choice to go to the starting islands.
-Player to NPC collision.
-Updated camera shakes for all light and heavy attack impacts or projectile launches. They should generally be slightly larger than before.

Most the negative shit you have heard is from people who didn't even make it to level 10 where they could experience pvp and the open world.

No prob Bob, we gotta stick up for this game. I am hoping this next patch silences a lot of critics who complain about 'floaty' combat and the starter islands. Personally, I liked the starter islands and fully intend on exploring them still, but I am glad to see them address a common complaint re. being 'stuck' on a start island... Even though said island was ripe for exploration. I digress, but you get it.

I've been seeing ^ opinion increasingly often, including in Smedley's blog (http://smedsblog.com/2014/02/11/the-sandbox-mmo/). One thing that's troubling to me, all things considered:

ESO - Not on board.

EQ Next - On board.

Which one will fail? Both? Neither? I can't wait to see.

People honestly can't find that first video earthshattering can they? I guess not everyone follows mmo development, but it's been apparent for quite a long time that the wow formula was here to stay until it stopped being 80% of the genre's revenue :P

Dan Aykroyd? What the fuck? That's Bill Mother Fucking Murray.

EverQuest a themepark? What? Been to EC once? Never going there again. Been to WC once? Never going there again. Also, you're never going back to Kithicor for anything every again. Yeah, not buying that one. EQ is handily a game in which the player provides their own direction, EQ doesn't hold your hand at all in guiding you. Not saying it is a Sandbox, as it falls in between, just like Eve, just like DAoC, just like SWG. Wow I hate this review.

Now he is claiming the success of WoW is because you could tell investors that people would pay $60 + $15 for a subscription, but that was a norm... By this, all MMOs before must be WoW like successes.

Okay, yes, people copied WoW. I am finally on board with this guy for a moment... Deviation from the norm was rare, correct. Still with him.

And now he is saying they consist of sandbox elements. Why are they not sandbox games with "themepark" elements? Why is it such a short sight to call pre-WoW something other than Themepark? Take WoW, you go to the Valley of Trials, you consume and expend that content (ridden the roller coaster) and you move on to the next area, Senjin Village. You consume the content, and move on. How many of you can really say you've moved on from West Freeport? EC? That's not a themepark, you're constantly working around within the same large space to do a variety of different things. You're not just shitting out quest after quest.

Hah, I missed that about Bill Murray.

I don't think he's calling EQ a theme park to bash it, he's just classifying it. If we're dividing everything into a dichotomy between 'Theme Park' and 'Sand Box', EQ definitely fits more into the theme park mold. You start off at Point A, and progress to point B through content provided by expansions. Yes, there is emergent gameplay. Yes, you do revisit previous areas. And it's a wonderful world. But it's a world away from a true sandboxish open world.

Some of the more sandboxish titles he neglected to mention, besides Eve, were (often cottage MMO's): Darkfall, Mortal Online, Wurm Online, Salem

He's classifying it badly. I am not saying he is insulting it, but he's an idiot if he says WoW is the epitome and perfection of the "Themepark" model, if EQ is also a "Themepark" model. WoW is not a completion of the beginnings of EQ, WoW is a different beast all around.

Okay, you start out at point A, but I disagree that you progress to point B. I knew numerous people who started out at point A, created their entire leveling progression path, and just started collecting lore books and making a library, lol. One of my old guilds had a Lore Master like that. I'm sorry, I do not agree with being idiotic enough to create a dichotomy. What you have are 3 paradigms: You have the Creature Grind, in which the player is released into a world and free to go murder tons and tons of creatures, in whatever way the game chooses to provide those creatures. That's EQ, DAoC, SWG, etc. You have the Quest Grind, in which the player is guided along a themepark of expendable questing content in which the player consumes all of the content in a given area, and then moves on to the next area until all content is entirely consumed. And then you have the "Adventure"/Emergent Grind, if you will, in which the game's central focus is upon making it so players create, ground up, their own means of fun, in which levels matter much less than your social interaction.

I don't think this guy knows much about MMOs honestly, only added to the missing sandboxish MMOs you mention. Anyone who is going to call Bill Murray Dan Aykroyd... Lol.

Yea I suppose you're right, but I was more interested in what was being said about sandboxes being a favorable model. It's nice to see that opinion outside the nostalgia echo-box we live in, to see it being said my Smedley, etc.

Like Uteunayr said, EQ is very 'open' and 'free' for the kind of world it is. I want to see more of that in ESO. I'm afraid Cyrodil isn't enough.

Yea, Everquest is a relatively hybridized experience, and it's not ultimately a strict dichotomy between 'Theme Park' and 'Sand Box' like the guy says, it's a spectrum. But EQ is infinitely more akin to WoW and the other theme parks than it is to a true sandbox.

I didn't mean to imply this video is an enlightening masterpiece on the state of the genre, I'm just lauding the pro-sandbox themes mixed with some jokes.

I feel like i enjoyed it because I wanted to enjoy it, not because it was actually enjoyable. I really want a new MMO to get into so I was like "oh this has great graphics, oh i like the classes." But once I got to the pvp I realized it was far from anything really cool.. and the PVE was nothing really exciting.

Not trying to knock it or anything, a lot of people like a lot of different MMO's.

Personally I always loved the open world shadowbane pvp. I liked EQ grouping and I liked WoW everything (through the first 2 expansions =P).

Hoping wildstar is cool.. until then ill bother people on p99 and play utopia.

Been in each Beta since September I think it was? last year. Honestly, I just can't bring myself to really playing this. I want to like it, but it just doesn't hook me. I think they fixed the floaty combat (I will check it out this weekend and see) which was my biggest gripe. And yes I've played past lvl 10... just really hate the combat and the game itself doesn't hook me.

Then again, I still got a ton to do in FFXIV:ARR, so maybe that's it. And with a full time life, a huge backlog of games I still need to finish, and South Park the Stick of Truth coming out Tuesday (been looking forward to this game for years!) I simply can't add another game. Especially a game that has zero TES feel to it, and bores me after a few hours at most.

I guess I will say it's not "bad". It's just generic. There really isn't anything special about it. The PvP was ok, but that alone isn't going to hold my attention for very long. The PvE still needs to be fun to give it some longevity, and the PvE in this game is boring at best. Atleast to me.

You really dont understand how teso works, classes are basically just a preset. If you want to play a "melee caster hybrid" pick a mage class and use 1h or 2h weapons as weapons in this game have there own skill trees.

So many issues in the beta tonight....... seems like the mass flood of players are causing major hickups in the game. I have already sent in about 10+ bug reports with certain quests not working but i suspect its due to the sheer amount of people talking to these npc's all at once.

Love the game but they better not release the game in this state.

People who are complaining about PvE: Have you guys run through the first faction dungeons?
I ran through Banished Cells for the aldmeri dominion, and that was a pretty cool instance. Nothing revolutionary, but the boss fights were fun. Going through the fighters guild quests were fun too, having to kill the snake girl who healed herself with the floating balls. Just fun encounters, I am curious to see what the other factions dungeons are like (we can port there and do them after we do our own factions)

Enjoying the beta. I'll play 3-9 months would be my guess based on what I've seen.

The best part about the thread is all of the complaints... Don't like the game? Not your cup of tea? I get that. But when people take the time to articulate what they don't (or think they don't) like about it, most of the complaints are stupid or just not based in reality.

If your complaint is that the graphics are shitty, the game isn't enough like Skyrim, questing bugs, lack of cross-faction chat, etc, you probably also complain about these forums for the lack of transgender posters. Detached. From. Reality.

For the one legitimate complaint of getting stuck in the UI -- I agree it sucks and shouldn't do that. Quickfix: press the hotkey to open the mail window then immediate close it. This seems to instantly fix the UI bug 99% of the time.

I don't really get this game.

I did some prison or something thing and i cannot remember a point in any game ever where i cared as little as what some phantom thing was telling me. I'd wager the whole of Korea would be proud of my clicking skills with how fast i wanted every npc with whom i was forced to speak to shut up. I had to essentially smash the compelling orb and was summarily orek xl'd to somewhere else that i also didn't care about, but at least i think the world opened up at that point.

Then i jumped like a million feet and didn't die, so i tried my darndest to meet my untimely (in the sense that it takes forever) demise at the hands of some npcs. When death finally greeted me i just clicked respawn here and was like wat then i logged out.

Why don't they just make a dark souls online ~fin

When you say the graphics are "sub par" and that they should have "improved with time", most people are going to think you're saying they're shitty in terms of quality or are otherwise outdated... Not that you just don't like the aesthetics.

Anyone who likes Skyrim graphics should like these well enough, They're basically Skyrim but slightly more cartoonized to accommodate a wider spectrum of video cards. And isn't that always the case for MMOs?

"between accounts"?

Does this mean that you don't send tells to individual characters, but instead send tells with account names?

Yes, basically. I have the people I play with on my friends list. It shows them by account name. I can send /tells to them and it will send it to whatever character that are logged in as.

I hope they do an authenticator. I don't like the idea that others can see my account name. There might be a way around this, but I haven't stumbled on it.

I sort of like this. I could think of a lot of problems on P99 with scamming and rudeness being diverted if characters connected back to an account/forum name.

It's not a bad idea, it'll mean that a name isn't "taken" once one person uses it?

Legolas for one? Legolas for all!

10/10 review would base my purchase of the game on this comment

I probably shouldn't be so quick to judge, but I totally am... this sounds awful. So you can talk to the other team in tells only if you've met one of them previously playing on your team?

And sending tells via account name, jeez. Way to kill roleplay, Bethesda.

I really don't know if that's accurate. It would take some testing...

That said, if you don't know them IRL or have previously met them, how would you expect to send them a tell in the first place? As in, how would you see the scenario play out in which you can't do what you'd want to do?

As in you kill someone from the other team in PVP and you want to taunt them afterward? I support it, but not sure if it can be done. I'll test it this afternoon if I have time to pop on.

$200 million budget! P99 still more fun. Go figure.

cant compare, p99 didnt create a game, they copy and pasted then did a little editing

Taunting during/after PvP is of course an important aspect of any MMO, but communication with bad guys doesn't have to be limited to simply that. If I start attacking someone and they're like, "Hey, wait! I don't wanna fight, let's just talk this out," I'll totally stop at least for a bit to see what they have to say.

And as anyone who played EQ pvp knows, some of the best relationships made in game resulted in frenemies: delightful people you murdered as like a friendly rivalry sort of thing, that you enjoyed chatting with.

Plus omg the RP. How are you gonna RP without being able to communicate with people? On live I liked to do light roleplay as a murderous elf, and if a dwarf was like, "Why'd you kill me? :(" I'd give some ridiculous spiel about global warming. It was tons of fun when they played along.

Who RP's? Seriously...go outside

What quest is that?

There was a lever like that in the mourning stone temple 4 or 5 beta's ago. Just had to bypass that questline...it wasnt part of the main line. Just a major side quest for the noobie island.

All that shit's apparently fixed in the PTS version which is not the version we just stress tested. The PTS version also has skippable starting islands and some other major changes.

he says it'll fail cause of the sub model? thats pretty dumb imo. its things like pay to win, and station stores that ruin games.

15$ a month is less than 4$ a week. if you dont get 4$ a week of entertainment, then dont play it.

but personally i prefer sub model > everything else ive seen

It's also less than 50 cents a day...it's amazing how much people stress over that.

As far as the budget of these newer MMOs, I could do with alot less voiceovers and scripted quests. Give me dungeons and a more lifelike(relatively) world any day.

Grinding Gear Games has the best f2p model. All of the stuff you buy in their store is purely cosmetic.

The money you need to recoup as a FTP MMO is different than a FTP MOBA or something like Path of Exile. They have different budgets and work on a different scale. You cannot compare the FTP models of these games to MMO's because they just do not work the same way in my opinion.

My friend sent me a key for this weekend but I didn't get a chance to play all weekend. How long is it lasting?

I might have some time today.

No but there might be one more test before the 30th. Could even be more than one test or a weeklong test or something, I don't know.
