I was watching a speedrun of MDK recently and heard a familiar little diddy (you only need to watch a few seconds):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiT924AjcCw&feature=youtu.be&t=8s

MDK is a great game and was released almost two full years ahead of Everquest

I realize that the jingle in MDK goes up slightly at the end so it isn't 100% the same, but the similarity is staggering.

Have there been any other sightings of this mystery tune in other games/media?

I'm pretty sure someone posted that the "DING!" (level up) sound has been spotted elsewhere... but damned if I can think of how long ago that got posted now :p

Off-topic slightly but its funny how WoW players used to say "ding!" in a public channel when they leveled up, when the leveling sound there isn't a ding at all :/ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEUD_1Trk-0) :D

Nice find anyway, very similar :)

I think its just a generic "Ding" sound honestly.

I remember the post swish is referring to and I swear someone said that it was also found as a stock .wav file in like earlier versions of windows.

I've heard the skeleton noises and certain spell sound effects all throughout my life after EQ. I just wish I could remember from what exactly. I think it has been off cartoons more than anything, though I do remember some noises from shows or movies that have the same kind of theme that the show Supernatural does. It's always been an awesome feeling when that brought me back to the old days of EQ.

I'm fairly certain I have heard the skeleton noises other places as well. On TV shows, I think.

I've heard the Gfay/Ambient Forest sounds (Some bats and other nightly noises) in other games/shows, though at this time I can't exactly specify where I've heard them, and remember thinking, "Damn, they stole that from EQ!" at first.

After hearing it a few times in different games/shows/movies I figured that it was a generic sound file for entertainment purposes, sort of like the Howie Scream (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howie_scream) used for the Starcraft Terran Academy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3WimCPUkQY) sound.

There was an episode of Law and Order: SVU where this little girl got raped and murdered outside of her foster home, and they suspected her foster brother of doing it. The first time you see him he's playing on his computer and you hear a very distinct da-da-daddle-dee-daddle-da-deee and you know right then and there he definitely did it

the show Supernatural

I heard the undead sound on there a couple of times. i.e. in the tower of frozen shadow, if you're near one of the ghosts. No idea what it really says, but something similar to 'chicken chicken slide..'.

On a starburst commerical a few years ago I heard a buff completion sound.

Maybe sony sold some audio assets or something?

I've experienced this sort of thing as well, but in my case it was the sound of the little baby mushrooms in Dark Souls on a commercial or something. I heard it from across the house and since I was playing Dark Souls religiously I recognized it immediately. It was a loon sound that they used for the mushrooms. But it was the exact sound file.

I hear EQ bear noises all the damn time. At least, I heard them first on EQ. I think.

The gator sounds from UO are used heavily on the Gator Boys TV show. I LOL every time I hear it.

I remember one day my kids were watching some Christmas show. I can't recall if it was a cartoon or one of the stop motion shows but one of the characters cast some spell and when it took effect it made the very familiar and much loved EQ level up ding and I almost jumped out of my chair.
I believe the sounds are all stock sounds which production companies use. Usually there's a minimal license fee or none if a public domain type thing because I've heard many EQ sounds in the oddest of places on shows..
It's pretty cool to hear and have that wave of nostalgia wash over you..

There is a matching game (card matching) on the Nabi which has the rat sound effect (the one they make when they are hit).

I also heard the ding noise on Jake and the Neverland Pirates (Disney show)

The old nickelodeon game show, "Figure it out," used the quest jingle in every episode.

South Park takes jingles from Heroes of Might and Magic III all the time.

Shit's just stock.

Tracked down an example from what sox7d mentioned:

I'd be interested in seeing if anyone tracks down ding's on youtube as well, pretty entertaining.

I'd be really curious to find out what the history of those oft-used EQ sounds are; whether or not Verant bought up a library when making the game, or if they decided to take advantage of non-exclusive licensing after the game took off.

Those elements are everywhere, and they're spread out across all kinds of libraries. I know I've worked on an animated project before where the music supervisor licensed a "spooky elements" library that had, among many other sounds, a bunch of skeleton crunch/collapse samples and the skeleton giggle that were identical to the EQ elements.

Also, fun fact - a lot of musicians are hardcore gamers (the fuck else do you do with 10 hours of drive time a day), as are a lot of producers/engineers, and they get a huge kick of sneaking samples/elements from games or movies into songs. Take a listen to this track -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjrTmJrmMj8#t=121

Listen carefully and in the background of the chorus you'll hear a clip of the abjuration spell cast.

I picked this one, not because it's done well but because it's more obvious than most. I personally would have pitch shifted it up so it wasn't rubbing against the track so bad, but whatever.

Kinda related, I've been trying to place this one for a while and I think it's a Toyota Camry open-door sound shifted to G (spoiler alert, it's a Kelly Clarkson track):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=R7UrFYvl5TE#t=39

If any more examples of EQ/game samples hidden in tracks come to mind, I'll post 'em.
