This is arguably one of the most exciting bits of MMO news I've heard in a very long time. Not only will they be giving subscribers lifetime free access, but they will also be releasing the server code for anybody who wants to create their own private servers. More companies need to follow this example.

You didn't read the article. They're not adopting a F2P model, it's just straight up going free to play. The game is for all intents and purposes an inactive project once this update goes live.
Those who had subs when it goes live get to keep that account for free, for the lifetime of the game thereafter. Updates will only be to keep bugs and crashes fixed.
AND THE SERVER CODE IS GOING TO BE DISTRIBUTED TO THOSE WHO WANT IT. Like...that's amazing and largely unprecedented.
Wait, so what if your account is inactive at the time it goes F2P?

That's the million dollar question... or... I guess the $12 question.

If someone had asked me if this game was still around, I'd say no, EVEN THOUGH I looked at this game a year ago and then forgot about it. Not only is it still around, but it's releasing its code.
Anarchy Online is at a similar intersection: should it die or keep going and/or release code?
I think most companies don't release code because of strings attached to licenses/permissions.
EDIT: I see they're not technically releasing their SOURCE CODE, they just plan on allowing players to run private/public Asherons Call servers. And none of this is DONE yet, just planned.

It's been back up for about a year now, you get access to it with a regular Asherons Call sub.

For real? I'll have to check it out. I had given up waiting for it to surface again.

Yeah it was a pretty amazing headline to wake up to when they announced it. Nobody saw it coming and it was really out of left field. Man come to think of it, Turbine have been bro's for a while now. Good on them.

While they don't intend on releasing the source, they claim if all goes well they will consider releasing the tools they use to create content. That's pretty awesome.

Turbine is a trainwreck of failure and stupidity. The damn D&D IP they have is being tanked horribly. Subs are on a serious decline. HUGE layoffs on all projects, GM support staff has been cut. Dev staff shot to hell. AC put in maintenance mode. Yeah, not good on them.
