The whole "being excommunicated from his own church" aspect of this story really puts it in a very unpredictable place. I'm fully expecting everyone to show up at his funeral ready to revenge-protest, only to find his own church standing there with signs. I have a very strong feeling the excommunication had something to do with his estranged son, who left the church to become a gay rights activist, and some kind of "Fred reached out to him in support" scenario that ended with him being labelled an enemy of the united shitheel league. Don't be surprised if you see authentic Westboro protest signs saying "Fred forgives, but God doesn't and that's why you're dead now" or some equally ridiculous shit to that effect when the time comes.


Whatever's worst for the church, that's what I hope happens. This could be a great opportunity to divide that bunch of assholes and pit them against each other in bloodsport. Watch and laugh as the whole thing burns to the ground, and no one even had to fire a shot.

Jim Jones was a severely misguided man with a messiah complex who thought that not only was he more "aware" of what God wanted than everybody else IN THE WORLD, but that it was his duty to warp the minds of the intellectually weak to get them to believe the same thing. The brainwashing eventually escalated beyond religious themes and he attempted to turn them into a "new nation," one where he was not constrained by the "evils" of his government or any other. When this situation got out of hand and he stood on the brink of an actual war with the government- one which, obviously, he didn't have a chance of winning- he murdered a congressman and four other people, then had everyone kill themselves to avoid prosecution.


The only difference between Fred Phelps and Jim Jones is that Fred Phelps has not yet had the chance to escalate his anti-government agenda into a mass exodus or secession. Jones, Koresh, Phelps, these guys all had the same "the government is trying to stop me from being Jesus, and I've got to put together enough muscle to make it so they can't stop me" attitude that I can guarantee would have ended the exact same way for WBC if it had gotten a chance to.
