I watched some videos, combat, art style, ui etc looked cool. Making builds is something I'd enjoy ala UO. Having said that I've heard there is no real content (in the way we as EQ enthusiasts would classify it), all pvp is instanced omg catapult a castle GW2 bullshit. Chests in public dungeons respawn so ppl afk autoloot. No open world pvp or fighting for mobs/gear etc.
Again, haven't played, haven't even followed ESO, just things i've heard in passing. Anyone confirm/deny/elaborate?

how is the pvp?
I enjoy it. If you find the keep siege zerg scene distasteful, it's not hard to find smaller skirmishes, go ganking, or sneak around and take certain objectives with a group of friends/guildies. If you know where to look you will find spontaneous, open-world pvp in the back-country of Cyrodil.
I don't know enough yet to compare the technical/meta aspects of the pvp to something like WoW or guild wars.

PvE is pretty much soloable. There are dungeons which are obviously not soloable, and they have random world bosses which are marked on your map by a skull and cross bones. You most likely cannot solo those unless you greatly outlevel the boss. They also have dark anchors which are these huge portal things that attach to the ground and shoot out demons. Those you'll need like 6+ people around the same level as the content to beat them. Other than that, the content is very soloable.
Keep in mind that, at least in my opinion, ESO is very story based. If you want to rush though the game to get to the top level, you may find the game to be unoriginal. If you want to get into the story and follow what quests are asking you to do, then I imagine the game will be enjoyable.

Pros:Some strategy,Free to do whatever, tradeskills supplies are everywhere literally, any race can be any class, all classes/races can weath light, medium or heavy armor and can master each type of armor or weapon. Can join up to 5 guilds, bank is shared per account
Cons
Only four classes. Dragonknight,Templar,Nightblade,Sorceror
No name tags above players or NPCs
Only way to level productively is to do never ending chain of quests grinding mobs is dreadful there is one spot level 4-8 but after that its meh.
Tons of useful features missing have to download Minion and use ADD ONS for lots of stuff.

So far seems like a single player game with npcs running around everywhere, but theyre actually players. Early on you are on rails for a guided tutorial then you just roflsolo everything with zero downtime afterwards. Ui is terrible. I miss red99 ooc compared to eso zone chat.
I have no idea wtf i am doing in game yet but what i do know is that lets say u wanna be a healer, you spam can 'smart heals' and dont actually target ppl, juat spam ae heals with no indication or health bars. Its kind of mindless gw2 button mashing designed for a console.
Im going to keep trying, but thats my inital impression.
Visually its impressive, and the action melee combat is fun, but i wish it was slightly closer to eq than gw2, but thats an unrealistic expectation.

Day two.
Ok so the only real way to level is to do quests. One can spam click thru the voiced dialog, follow your compass to the appropriate arrow, run the distance equ. of dreadlands to CoM, press 'e' on a pillar, crystal, or scroll, etc repeat two more time, a boss will threaten you but u dont get to fight it, you just press 'e' on the gem or portal or whatever that keeps him alive, then more dialog, then u get exp and a random item. Ive yet to fight a boss.
All mobs are tethered to their spawn point, if you get too far from it they snap back to it with no aggro and full hp.
Imagine doing a skyrim dungeon puzzle, except there is like eight other ppl there doing the same puzzle independently, sprinting to and from each quest location essentially in single file trains of players just trying to get it over with. People dont seem to talk or group, zone chat is people spamming rmt website urls. While the visuals and sound are top notch for an mmo, the world actually feels more dead than red99.

I'm level 8 at the moment and becoming nostalgic for Rift. Playing a duel wielding Nightblade... Did the gutripper quest guy last night when I was level 7, took me about 12 tries and some nice RNG to pull it off -- honestly the most fun I've had the whole game.
I want to do something that will give decent xp/loot that I can do with my 3 friends who are also in the 7-11 range. Are there dungeons or anything we can team up to do that have decent returns?

It was pretty obvious since Alpha/Beta, that ESO was not Elder Scrolls with an online element, yet rather it was an online MMO with Elder Scrolls influence.
Skyrim + net code DLC for four or eight person private match making would have been ideal.
You and your friends jump into Tamirel and go ape shit in whatever way you feel like.
Instead we got ESO - let's just pray whatever online gaming data they mine from ESO will be used to put net code into TES 6.
Also, if you dig TES games and can't wait for TES 6, check out Kingdom Come.

I think the real question is, was that above pvp video of an instance, or open-world pvp?
It is all open world, the whole center of the world map is an open 3 faction PvP zone. There are also several dungeons which are open to anyone, similar to EQ dungeons.
I think it was easily worth the $64 I paid for it, but in a little more depth:
The world and graphics are well done, and will probably grow on you the more you play.
The limited(5 + ultimate on each weapon) hotkey bar setup reminds me a lot of EQ, where you will probably be required to adapt and switch abilities on the fly. IMO it is a good thing, but it seems to be a point of contention for a lot of people.
PvP diversity is evolving. Currently basically everyone is running bow it seems, but new and effective builds are popping up more often now. So far it seems like there will be real diversity in veteran rank PvP.
Combat itself is odd. Getting a block or interrupt stun, and following it with a heavy attack knockdown I feel really connected to my little avatar. Getting charged and dodge rolling with a CC follow up of my own, again, feels very connected. On the flip side, in PvE you will sometimes catch a beat down from steady damage with no identifiable animation. I think that is probably aimed at preventing players with good reflexes from being able to just solo everything. In PvP, it is pretty annoying to lose 30% or more of your health from an arrow from some random hidden guy, which you can't really prevent either.
On that note, I really hate the stealth mechanics in ESO. If your group sees another group, everyone immediately hides. So far it feels like that takes away from positioning and adds a luck-of-detection factor, but it also may be something that I will learn to counter as I play.
When I stopped expecting for it to be like other games, I really started to enjoy it. Explore around, learn some new stuff, and support the development of open world, PvP centric games for a trivial amount of cash. I'll also add that leveling zones are packed with players, so there is a lot going on in the game.

It depends on what megashard you're on. Currently the NA launch is going pretty smooth if you don't care about economy at all, dupe bugs that were found during closed beta test were not fixed and they made it into the release so for weeks people have been duping massive amounts of high end materials and other nonsense. After the first duping bug was fixed because of some faulty programming with the guild bank system, a second one popped up where you could alt-f4 when logging in if you had a mail sent to you from one of your hireling guys it would send you another mail. So you could get a bunch of those mails basically creating free items again.
The European megashard has the same issues except they are being plagued by a bug that is not letting them get past level 50. The level 50 quest that leads you into the ranked part of the game (basically 10 more levels) was messed up for them. I'm not sure if it is fixed yet. Also, I hear that right now PVP is a bit wonky over there on some of the shards due to the vampire ultimate being a little overpowered when you're the emperor.
It's an okay launch, but not stellar.
Edit: Also, because there is no central auction house the economy hasn't really taken that huge of a hit or anything, there's just a lot of extra shit. The gold farmers were able to dupe massive amounts of the highest level soul gems though and sell them for a lot of gold.
i heard this release was going very very poorly

Not a flawless release. I'd say lag and server downtime have been better than most releases, but there are other issues. There was a duping exploit/glitch that allowed people to stockpile massive amounts of epic/legendary crafting mats and siege equipment. The issue was reported in beta and ZOS did nothing until the issue blew up in reddit/youtube.
During the first few days people experienced rollbacks in certain zones, but it was fixed. Server stability/bugginess are in a pretty good place currently.
Right now the endgame consists of the following:
You reach Veteran Rank 1, at which point you do the recycled quests of the other factions (Like if you got lvl 50 Horde on WoW, levels became 10x slower, and you did 50-60 as an alliance from the beginning, scaled to your level). 'Veteran Dungeons' are the same dungeons you did leveling up, except each boss has been given several harsh wipe mechanics and everything has been retuned for VR5. Or you can keep doing cyrodil. You gain negligible experience there and don't really advance your VR while pvp-ing.
Sometime near the end of April they are adding end-game content, a single adventure zone called 'Craglorn' where you can do quests and dungeons scaled to your group.
If you don't like questing, or got sick of it by the time you were VR1, you're in for a rough ride getting to VR10

Not too bad. The first week there were problems with crashing and long loading screens, but that seems to have been fixed. Every once in a while I'll sit for 2-3 mins loading, but usually it's 20 sec at most. I'll add that even at it's worst, the game was still very playable, just frustrating at times.
Zenimax did find and fix the dupe bugs, as well as temporarily suspend accounts that were found to have abused them. Of course, during all of this, several photoshopped screenshots were posted to various forums to make the problem look way bigger than it really was.
It was an average to above average release. Trolls of course want to make it seem terrible, and I can see people with shitty machines having problems, but the game was never unplayable.

I'll also add that they probably don't like subscription games, either because they're not adult enough to have a way to pay for them or for some reason they prefer the blight on the MMO world that is the "free-to-play" model.

... I don't like eso and most of ^that^ is true :X
I think a heavy contributor, for me, is I must clearly have a long/mid term objective while playing a game. It doesn't have to be min/maxing or end game and can be fairly arbitrary but I need some concrete thing. I don't even know what I'm shooting for in ESO.

04-24-2014, 11:13 PM
My objectives are almost all about character progression, getting that next skill or spell. I find that with a lot of games once I reach max level I start getting bored very fast.
With ESO though there's Cyrodiil still, and PVP can be a lot of fun. That doesn't mean that when I reach 50 I won't start getting bored because I won't have the impetus to play like I did when I was only level 20, but Cyrodiil is fun so even when my character has no more skills or power to gain the game is still playable.
