I've discovered that I still need to use soap in order to clean my dirty elf feet and other areas, and the cheap soaps that don't dry out my skin really badly seem to disappear soon after unwrapping. So now I have a half-baked plan to save some money, and bought a 1 lb block of "hemp oil soap base" (which is mostly olive oil) for $5. Just ordered a cheap soap mold online so it will be a few days before I can play around with it.
Really should have thought this through a little more before buying anything, but if I screw it up it should be a pretty simple matter to salvage the stuff. My plan was to melt the base down and add coconut oil (which is a squishy and melty solid at room temp) to dilute it because it's amazing for skin and is really cheap when buying in bulk. Also some essential oils, which will be the really fun part. Maybe some coarse salt too but that can wait for next time.
But now I'm worried that it won't work as well as I had hoped because getting all these oils to stay together as a solid probably takes a certain ratio of oils to something (emulsifier? saponifying agent?) and the added oil will mess that up.
Right? Idk. Have you done this? Might google around a bit too but it never hurts to ask. If the mold gets here soon I'll probably just go at it, starting with smallish chunks of soap base and much smaller amounts of coconut oil, working up the ratio slowly. It's gonna be funny if my soap melts in the shower lol.

Mechlingburger does. I think he sells it on the Internet too. If I see him around I'll let him know this thread exists.

What soap do you use, Kimm? I have eczema so I have to be really careful in order to keep my skin soft and creamy. Bet you're drying yours out hardcore with blah quality expensive soap

I make my own soap. To make soap, I first render fat. The salt balance has to be just right, so the best fat for making soap comes from humans. Now, ancient people found their clothes got cleaner if they washed them at a certain spot in the river. You know why? Human sacrifices were once made on the hills above this river. Bodies burnt, water speeded through the wood ashes to create lye. The lye combined with the melted fat of the bodies, till a thick white soapy discharge crept into the river.

Pretty good for a bad soap. SLS dries you out as the moisturizer works to reduce that heh. Soap in conflict :O

My mother-in-law makes goat milk soap all the time. I just grabbed a random recipe offline. People seem to like it for whatever reason.

all about Dr Bronners... is a miracle in a bottle.. so safe you can wash babeis and pets and brush your teeth with it yet it dissolves dirt and oil unlike emulsion action of soap... one of the safest, best working, best value from a fair trade/organic/sustainable use company.. brilliant!
Yes, I've used it some in the past. You can even use as a household cleaner; the stuff is strong.. A little tooo strong for me, even diluted into oblivion.

This is what I'll be trying next! Depending how expensive lye and things are.
So the results: all of the coconut oil went up, and all of the salt went down. Top layer of coconut oil came right off in the shower so I put it in my hair. It was kind of nice having one side rough with salt and the other smooth. Wouldn't call this a failure but maybe I should look for something safe and rough that stays suspended in oil after being mixed. Added lavender essential oil and it smells wonder.

I promote making homemade soap and I've done it myself... that said: I have psorasis and I can say with some certainty... pretty much all soaps that clean are going to dry out your skin (name of the game, soaps cut oil, skin uses oil to stay moist...) so just gotta lotion up after... :/

Well, I don't place much stock in holistic cures to systemic autoimmune diseases but I'm willing to give it a shot. Got a guide on how to make some, where to buy it, or how to make it? I've used hemp lotion before, just like any other lotion.

Yes. Because of this, I've only been washing my feet and other dirty areas. Stopped soaping my legs, torso, neck and arms months ago. Most days I only do my feet, 'cause they get pretty dirty somehow and the skin there is less sensitive.
Water with an exfoliating thing is enough for most of the body.
EDIT: Oh I wash my face twice a day. It does better for some reason. Maybe the oil production was too much when I tried to acclimate it to no soap at first and would have improved, but it caused me to break out a bit so I started washing it again.

I get dry skin in the winter where it looks like I have ciggerette burns on my arms. I use dove sensitive skin in the bottle. Shit is like yogurt but, got damn. Never get them dry marks and it has no dyes or smells to it.
