Can barely remember. I think it was called Infantry, or Tanaris? basically you controlled a dude from overhead like a nintendo game and ran around shooting projectiles at other dudes. It was team/capture/objective based. Diff games from CTF, FFA, Deathmath, the classics.
The tricky part was when you changed direction you sort of "drifted" so new players would have trouble controlling and it took a while to pick up, sliding into walls etc. Also different projectiles moved at different rates so combined with the sliding affect it was a tricky game.
I was never hardcore which may be the reason I'm having trouble remembering the game. Anyway after WoW came out searching "Tanaris" in google was hopeless and "Infantry" is too loose a search term..
Would be crazy to play that game or see a video of it.

O yea and if I remember correctly it was hosted on "the station", which had many web games back in the day.

Best online game ever - Neverwinter - was free to play on American Onlines games channel in the early internet days. Resembled the gold box D&D games and was a mix of pvp / pve with D&D rules. Think max level was like 6 for a dual class make up.

It was spelled Tanarus. Another Verant gem from back in the day. Haven't thought about it in quite some time, I played it a bunch back then though.

Yeah Infantry. At first it was just one map and you ran around collecting weapons to use, then it got complex with some game modes. Later there was Cosmic Rift which was like Infantry with spaceships.
I played Tanarus too. Force wars was my favorite:

Watching those tanks go flying makes me smile. I actually paid 10 bucks a month for that game. That's a game I want back, just for force wars. Cham wars were fun too where you had to listen real close and guess where the enemy was.

Free? That game was $6/hr at one point. When was it free?
