For years I've been reminiscing how my experiences with EverQuest back in 1999 was a defining moment in gaming history. I've played many MMOs since then but they never captured the essence of fun that I felt when playing EverQuest. I happened to find this service a couple of days ago and was overjoyed that someone has made my dream a reality; to play EverQuest again, how I remember it all those years ago!

Thank you to those who's hard work and effort made this happen and hello to those I will be shortly playing with (I just have to figure out which character to reroll... maybe my bard...).

Welcome back, Cyph - I think your going to like it here ;)

I have to say that it is refreshing seeing posts such as this on a semi-regular basis. So many of us came from an era when MMO's were still finding themselves and the number of options could be counted on one hand. We experienced the growing pains of the genre, and we witnessed the degeneration of the genre into a mindless collection of pretty colors. As a result, we all opined for the return of things "the way they used to be", with EQ lingering in the back of our minds.

Ill admit, when I came back and rolled a warrior I was shocked at how *hard* it was. Blue cons were trashing my big bad ogre warrior by level 4, and exp ground to a crawl. And I grinned... thats the way it was supposed to be :D

Indeed - the fear of death in Classic EQ is simply exhilarating in a way that WoW never was. Even EVE online doesn't compare in this respect.

Nothing like dying down inside Befallen when you're alone.. or a group wipe.. and there are no others in the zone.. That's when you appreciate just how difficult the game can be.. and also makes you fear these zones that much more..
Make sure that you take time to try different zones which you may have passed up previously (and of course the ones you loved to be in). I am discovering parts of Everquest which I had blew past back int he day and I am loving it. For example, I never had done anything in SolA for years and decided to try it here and I really love the look and feel of the zone..
Have a great time and I hope to see you in game!

It's not just a fear of death, either. EQ is the only game I've ever played that got my heart racing- sometimes out of fear, but often out of excitement.

When you've been waiting for Dyllin or Hadden to spawn, and he finally does, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's pulse quickens, and whose fingers shake a bit trying to press the right keys to bring him down.

No other game has ever been able to do that to me.

I was stoked when I found this bitch. I was keeping an eye on another project for what, 2 years, and it didn't look like it was going to ever happen. Then one day I was bored at work and caught wind of this on the internet somehow and thought 'hmm what is this?'. I about shit my pants when I saw it was a functional classic server up and running! I'm kinda butthurt I didn't find it while there was still time to get a Guise of the Deceiver, but oh well. I play pretty casually, and it's taken forever for me to get to 50, but I'm glad to be back!

Thanks for all the replies. I do have some questions though, which I was hoping you guys may be able to help me out on. I've noticed last night (so... 15 hours ago from this post), I was experiencing some lag (in GFay); I was wondering if this was because of the server or perhaps my location (Western Australia). It was nothing too major but was causing troubles trying to get into position to attack mobs. Also, I experienced some crashing, but it wasn't of the normal variety, rather, I could still interact with the GUI but it was not refreshing or painting. I would then have to quit EQ and restart it to be able to enter back into the game. Anyone else experience this?

There were a lot of issues yesterday with the server, seems like they are mostly sorted out now but I've still had a couple of laggy times today.

The server today at lunch time was far more responsive, even with 700+ players! When I get home tonight I'm going to try out Savok's UI.

And 1 gold for my level 2 bard song!? Were they always that expensive?! Wow, I'm going to be grinding in GFay for a while...

After you have lost your corpse and lost a level and went looking vainly for the holy grail and seen the blood of the fallen and stood alongside your friends and upheld your values and been trained more than you can count then maybe I will care. Until then, you're not entitled to my attention. But since I am a friendly gentleman I will give you at least that much. I wish you will, but your journey here has not even begun yet.

SolA is an awesome zone. You can hunt there starting at 18-20 in a group, and sticking near the zone. I think you can stay there for probably 10 levels. There is a vendor relatively nearby also... LOVED that place, it was so underappreciated back in the day.

Speaking of under-appreciated... Runnyeye, fantastic place to hunt.
