View Full Version : Playing EQ on a playstation controller

Purchase ($10 i think) Xpadder, at http://www.xpadder.com/ and yes it's worth $10 it's an incredible program that you couldn't have even imagined to develop yourself.
Purchase a logitech playstation controller at Wal Mart or whatever, get whatever controller you want.
Run Xpadder. Map hotkeys to buttons and analog sticks to mouse movement. You can map right and left click, combinations of buttons such as Ctrl+S and virtually whatever you want. I personally use my left analog stick as a slow moving mouse and the right as the quick moving mouse and rarely use the left analog stick.
See? It's very easy even a baby could do it. So stop acting surprised when I tell you I'm playing a bard or enchanter on a playstation controller. It's EASY. My challenge goes out to YOU to play EQ on an NES controller. Better yet, make a warrior and do it on atari ( http://www.retrousb.com/index.php?cPath=21&osCsid=cefa0aedc39ac7310a9fa0c766f398a4 )
Enjoy!

I never tried it, but I'm sure with better DS3 you could do the same thing without the adapter.

How would you see the game if you played it on just a playstation controller?

I have an xbox controller, would love to try this on a rogue some time. I think I would do it in third person. What kind of mapping do you use (edit: specifically, if you don't mind)?

I'm not sure bud I was trying to be non-technical. I think there's a general misunderstanding about how easy it is to do this. I personally waited 2 years or something before I started using the logitech controller and damned if i dont regret it

telemakus i can post my setup in a bit, but here's some tips
1) set the push-in of the analog stick to be sit
2) make one button autorun of course
3) make start open inventory and select close inventory
4) You have 4 hotkeys but you can use Ctrl+1 for example to use hotkey 5

where 1 and 2 are left and right click, num pad 1 2 and 3 are hotkeys on action bar, O and I are close and open inventory respectively, num pad 9 is sit (you could also just assign it to Ctrl+S if you want i dont spend much time on this stuff) Num pad - is auto run, and E is just leftover it's not for EQ

If you need more hotkeys than 3 (i've never found this to be the case) you can make hotkeys assigned to Ctrl+n (n being a number) and make one of the buttons on your controller assigned to the Ctrl button. that way you turn 3 keys into 6

Seems imaginable. Hard part would probably be finding the raw input values for various hardware. And making all that user-friendly visual configuration crap.

you actually make the visual layout for your controller in Xpadder, that's why the buttons seem a little "ill placed" because I'm the one that placed them

lol thank you :P
The tank in my guild on Live has joked about using an Xbox controller to play EQ before. 1 button for last stand, no time to bleed, forage, and /afk. Had a little diagram of it as his sig for awhile, got the idea from that hah.
I've hooked my PS3 controller up to my computer before. Used it to play a few games but never considered using it for EQ or an MMO before. Always struck me as having more things to hit in an MMO than the buttons on the controller lol.

This sounds awful, just my opinion.
maybe an Atari joystick would be fun

I spend half my play time in my spellbook swapping out my spells... I can't imagine a world in which you could be even 1/10th as efficient as an enchanter while using a gamepad.

This post was intended to inform people, especially casual people, that it's not very hard to get the controller up and running and pretend you're playing a PS or Xbox game. Fun too =P

I see, more power to em then. I did try this when I first installed, because I only had an HTPC and it was hooked up to my TV. I had a bad time :(

I spent 20 minuets setting up an Xbox controller when I was like a level 20 bard because I thought I was going to be brilliant. My next kite I ran in a tight spiral right back into it and died and went back to mouse & keyboard.

Ok so I'm playing around with it like this with a lowbie shaman. Really isn't terrible, because it's a lowbie and it's very casual. It's easy to switch to mouse and keyboard if I need to by just putting down the controller.
The only thing I am having trouble with is determining the mouse movement speed. I like to use right click and mouse to look around, but its incredibly less fluid with the controller.
Thoughts?

my system for it was shitty, but it "worked" I set left trigger to be "right clicking" and then put "MouseControl" on the right analog stick - then I would be able to simulate controlling the camera by holding the trigger down while moving the right analog stick.
I don't know if that's what your asking, but that's how I was able to control it - while holding the trigger down it did feel as though the camera controls performed as you would expect a 3rd person cam to perform in any action game. Though it was annoying that I had to hold the trigger down to get it to work.
I suppose if you had a good application that would let 1 button perform multiple actions you could make L/R/U/D on the analog sticks do RmouseButton&MouseControl...
My mouse move speed is at what 30 fps? whatever it is that people say it should be to fix the sluggish mouse bug. I think thats 30.

I was asking more of a critique if there was anything that could be improved with the setup I tried. I think we probably ran similar setups. I've been playing around with it and the mouse speed seems to be more tolerable. Using the program recommended by the OP, I have the mouse speed settings at 150/150. I dunno how to set the mouse FPS, is that done ingame?
I might change the mapping for the left control stick button from sit to something else useful. Since having Select be my /book button, I can just move around the spell book to look around and its the same as sitting.
Just to add, I'm not confident with it enough that if I was doing something complicated, I would probably just put down the remote. Already once I've had to do that when I somehow tabbed out of the client... still not sure how that happened. I think I just clicked outside of the window. I have a problem where I can't seem to run EQ outside of windowed mode.
edit: changed hte line in eqclient.ini where it says "windowed mode=true" to "false" and now i dont have the windowed mode problem.
I'm going to get a hold of an hdmi cable and hook my computer up to my living room TV. Then, EQ on the couch with the remote :) wont be the most effective, but it will be fun.

Yes, I've used xpadder with a xbox360 controller to play EQ before. It works but eq was designed around a mouse and keyboard so it's not super fluid.
For melee classes it works great. The heavier caster you play the more difficult it is going to be to control in sticky situations.

The image I linked is the setup I'm using with the xbox360 controller. I used the OP's recommended program to do the key mapping. 10 dollars wasn't a terrible price.
