View Full Version : Affording Newbie Spells?

I just started on this server a few hours ago. I played a Gnome Rogue back in the day, and decided I wanted to try something different this time around. I decided on a Dark Elf Necromancer.

I thought I would be clever and avoid my level one spells to save money for my level four spells. After grinding my way to 4 with just my basic life-tap and newbie dagger I ran triumphantly to the Necromancer guild to enjoy my newfound power...

...Except I didn't have enough money to buy anything.

My accumulated wealth of 5g from selling everything I had collected from level one to four wasn't enough to get any of the level four spells. I ended up selling a piece of cloth armor I was wearing to afford the pet, and now I'm broke (And slightly more naked than I already was, which I didn't think possible).

So, how newbie casters do it? It has been so long this old fart can't remember how to get by as a newbie in the Nektulos area.

lol welcome back to EQ! Send me a tell in game and I will give you enough money for all your spells. If your not down with getting handouts from people trying to make the community seem really friendly then run your ass to west freeport and only fight skeletons and orcs and sell the weapons and armor until you have enough.

The level 1 and 4 spells are fine if you hunt the right mobs (although you might have to forego buying a couple of the less important level 4 spells), but the level 8 ones are a bitch, as the price jumps from 5g per spell to several pp. To afford your level 1 and 4 spells, hunt monsters that drop weapons and clothes (decaying skeletons in North Ro are great and close to Neriak, just keep your distance from the guard). You can also sell bone chips for 5-10pp a stack (although as a nec you're probably better off keeping them), high quality bear pelts for 10pp a pelt, and spiderling/spider silks for a few plat a stack. So it's doable, but you've gotta be shrewd.

How could you possibly have only 5g going from 1-4 if you've collected everything? It has been a while but I am fairly sure I had at least 15-20 plat by the time I was 4.

Kill bears, eventually get an HQ pelt or two, take em to EC and /auc them for 10pp each.

I found spells really hard to afford on my mage until level 16. I killed willowisps in WC almost exclusively from 12 to 16 then took all of the GLS's to Karana (Sro for you I think) and did the concordance quest a bunch of times, made 300pp or something. After that I was set for life.

I never thought of myself as genius but since its not mentioned yet. Skeletons! They cloth you with cloth, drop alot weapons to vendor, drop bags and containers and most of all 5pp a stack of bone chips! Even if you have to run to Freeport areas, it worth it.

I leveled a necro but erudite with no help or handouts at all... I only bought my taps and pet but once u get to level 12 u willnt have a problem gettin spells. But EQ isnt suppose to be easy... Kill everything possible and just save is pretty much all i can say, if u get cloth sell it for spells. I even sold my bonechips cause once u sell a stack your good for your spells til lvl 12.

Being a low level caster IS tricky, as much as I like to condescend little shrimps who can't make money themselves, because you have to balance a lot of competing interests at once. Not only do you have to go insane looting everything that might be of value (weapons, cloth, bone chips, spider silks, spiderling silks, high quality pelts/skins, Deathfist/Crushbone belts, etc.) but you need to save up money from the stuff you're looting just to buy the bags to hold them in! You don't need to beg from people to afford all of your good spells, but it's annoying if you don't know what to look for. As people said, just farm things like bone chips (even as a necro, you should save enough for yourself and if you can get a stack to sell, it's worth it just to buy your spells) and other items of value and you'll be able to afford most of the important spells. Keep in mind you're not supposed to buy every spell, and you're going to have to make tough decisions regarding which spells are "more important" than the others.

Sell Crushbone Belts/Pads for 1-2pp a piece.

Save absolute every penny,
Buy nothing whatsoever (other than spells),
Even sell off looted armour if you need to,
Only buy spells you absolutely need. Don't waste on 'Endure Poison' when its not vital.

Sometimes you just wont be able to afford them all. So get what you must.

What Daiv said... Then in your teens when u start making money go back and buy the IVu, track corpse and the other spells you will need. Some people go and buy worthless spells that they willnt need to they hit there teens ( ivu and such)

Kill humanoid type mobs(ie kobolds , gnolls, goblins, orcs). As you mentioned that you are a gnome necro; my suggestion would be to buy Leering Corpse, and solo a kobold camp for a few lvls. I had plenty of pp to buy the important spells on my necro doing this. They drop cloth armor, which once you have a set of, you can sell off the extra pieces for a couple gold each. They also drop rusty weapons, save a couple cheap ones for pet weapons, and sell the rest. I would do this until I was so loaded down I could barely move, then I'd go sell and start again.

*EDIT* Don't know why I thought you said Gnome Necro, sorry . Will leave the info though. Maybe it will help someone in the future.

A lot of good advice here, thanks everyone.

I discovered the little gold mine of "large spiders" which have been dropping venom sacks for me worth around 5 gold, which has been helping a lot. I actually have enough spells to fill up my gem slots now, which feels great.

I'm level 6 now, and I'm thinking when I hit level 8 I'll start leaving Nektulos to explore the world and start grouping.
