How long will the server last?

2003-2008, I wished for a classic EQ server constantly. I've been playing this server on and off since release but even when I'm not playing I take great comfort in the fact that it's always there waiting for me. It's gonna be pretty shitty when the server finally dies, but the question is, when do you guys think that will be?

This server represents a snapshot in time, that many experienced and never found anything like it again.

For me, I will always participate, and based on the players I know, I am not alone.

i still have hope one day of a working trilogy client instead of titanium to play on, the work Telin did with spells effects is amazing but titanium will never feel quite right to me

You know and I know this server is not going to last forever. You can only do the same thing over and over again for so long. The Devs have real lives and the older they get the less they will care. Such is life.

I hardly ever play any more, and even if Velious comes out so what. Been there done that. Then what? There is nothing new to do or see if you have been doing this since the start. Not many virgins on here by now. So just becoming same oh same oh. Just go out and cut your grass or get your car or truck ready for winter. Would be a better plan. At some point you just have to give it up. :o

I can do the same thing over and over quite happily. I have played the Soul Reaver games dozens of times. Zelda:OoT at least half a dozen. I go back to PSO and AO now and then. Oh and Morrowind, love to go back to that when MMOs are getting on my nerves. Mass Effect has joined the family too.

I like playing new games but the ones that hold up to my old favorites are few and far between.

And why isnt it possible that the ppl who are in charge just looking for another person who will keep the server running?

I think Rogean and Nilbog have kept the ship sailing through rough seas quite well. They have had to steer through the waters of ddos, cannon fire cease and desist from SOE, and even made people like Uthgaard and co. walk the plank. When the time comes it will either be passed to a fine el capitano, or they will go down with the ship.

Even if they took the server down tomorrow and burned every hard disk involved, I still think a classic Everquest server would rise again. There's just something so compelling about this game that someone (maybe Jeremy with his new project, maybe someone else) would come along and make it happen.

... but of course it would take them years to accomplish anything close to P99 in it's current form, so here's hoping this server doesn't go anywhere anytime soon (and that when it does go, its source code and database get passed off to someone).

its true. there is a definite demand for classic EQ...but its not as though p99 is the only one who tried to make it a reality. EQclassic comes to mind, but has been essentially a failure of producing anything close to launch playable; Kegz...well, just lol...; progression servers from sony have been fun and lots of folks who play here but they don't scratch the classic itch.

rogean and nilbog have been truly exceptional individuals. without them there would be tons of demand for a legit classic server community, and none to be had.

hopefully, when the time comes for rogean (for whatever reason) to move on from p99 and eqemu he hands it a person or group of people equally capable and dedicated.

There may be a classic EQ server, but will it be worth a damn? What you suggest doesn't inspire unless the bulk of the P99 team is part of it.

My predictions are, in order of my preference (IF the server has to go down at all):

1. Management gets tired of running the server. Open Source the whole shooting match, guys like me immediately set up Classic servers up the yinyang with a population of like 10 people each. Expansions are released based on Classic, the good ones get reasonable followings, and everyone has a grand old time.

2. Sony realizes they can make mittfuls of money plumbing the Classic EQ market, hire RogeanNilbog Inc. to run a time-locked Classic Progression Server (or serveral of them) and we all cheerfully pay them $19.95 a month til we die.

3. The Management finally gets tired of the shit and takes the server down and gives us the finger.

i think they need to seriously consider letting this server go non classic past vel and starting a server that doesnt get caught on kunark for 3 years. could use this server to beta the next eq project.

every server has a shelf life. gotta keep it freesh..also need a new purple/red server..

ive always wanted to be part of the first generation of a server. id even hop on live to see the noob zones and gen 1 chrs rising up if a new progress server emerged.

How flexible is the Vel test server? Do I have to start at level one or can I set levelX to test this zone and change to levelY for that zone?
Can I change classes, or doin have to level a whelp from 1 to reach content?

You type /beta on any character on blue/red. One of the big gnomes can beta buff you to 60 with mostly best in slot gear.

So you can make a level 1 of any class and go test that class. At any time of day. Any day of the week.

My only real regret for all P99 servers is that so many who play here, and have played here, played too late too see the server before "competition" became so personal.

If timestamps were changed to a 8 byte timestamp, we'd still run into issues in Sun, 4 December 292,277,026,596 - but by that time, the earth is probably going to be swallowed whole by the sun, so that's likely not to be an issue.
