Has anyone done damage parsing to figure out what weapons to give pets? I remember back on live early in 1999 or so, people thought that giving low delay weapons (such as the mage lvl 1 summoned dagger) was best. But I'm not sure if this was "common knowledge" that was never confirmed by actual dps parsing.

Has such parsing been done?

Generally it doesn't matter after level 8 or so. The best weapons are ones with procs like Staff of Writhing, Gnoll Hide Lariat, etc.

Pets used to take the delay of weapons. I remember quite well my 16 necro pet soloing yellows with no help when he had mage daggers. I also remember when they nerfed it.

On live pets will take the damage of weapons if it is higher than what they have. While it's pretty much impossible to get pet weapons at higher levels with higher damage than they have by default, a level 1 skel pet with a rusty halberd will hit the 20dmg cap and be able to one shot whites. Delay is unchanged.

Course by "on live" I mean "on live in 2001" or so when I quit.

On P99, people have told me that pet weapons do nothing unless they proc. I haven't done much testing myself though as I don't have a low level mage or necro.

Bolded this, except some pets need to be force dual wielded like the 24 necro / mage pets, and all enchanter pets that can (like 34+?)

I've tested this, giving pets weapons only works to have them dual wield if they can't do so w/o them. pets will not take damage nor delay of a weapon, but they can proc weapons just fine

everyone forgot 1 important fact... the pets look more badass with a weapon or 2. that should be enough really

Another thing to keep in mind is lower level pets can't hit mobs that need magic items to hit (i.e. wisps, elementals, etc.) . Another good use of magician daggers...

Gnoll hide lariat and scimitar pet ftw!

24-44 for mages, w/ the exception of the max lv. 39 pet, is when they need 2x weaps to DW.

@OP - Test it yourself, give your pet weapons with drastically different delays and watch his hands swing together instead of independently.
