View Full Version : Is there any roleplaying community?

Greetings,

It's been awhile since I've logged on, but I've gotten into D&D 5e since then.

This has got me wondering: Is there any roleplaying community on P99? I read a post from several years ago that BDA had some things going on, but haven't found very much else.

Does anybody else roleplay in smaller groups? What's it like for those who try? Thanks!

Garette

Red is your best option for in-depth roleplaying.

Hmm, not looking for such a cutthroat experience, even if I lose some of the real roleplaying quality.

Thanks for the response!

That was a joke, red is about as far from Roleplaying as you can get. On a serious note, there have been a couple roleplaying guilds on blue over the years but im not sure that any lasted very long. It's kindof a small sub-group of the community here.

I watch dnd shows on Twitch a couple times a week; I've never really known the people to get into it irl but I'd totally play if I knew the right group online.

I've been thinking of trying to get a group together to play The Quiet Year also. There's a Roll20 module for it: https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/module/4/the-quiet-year

I was trying to get a homebrew 5e game set in Norrath going on Roll20, but it didn't get much traction.

That's why I thought about coming back and just seeing if there was anybody who roleplayed here in game. You probably have to use your imagination, but I can see some cool things happening in all of the dungeons (even Crushbone + Blackburrow)

How exactly would this work as rolling of dice is now banned?

Rolling dice isn't banned. Just casinos.

Well, I was originally going to use Roll20 (http://roll20.net/) but as mentioned it got very little traction. It would have basically been a D&D 5e game with some modifications to class names, races maybe, set in the world of Norrath. The first campaign I was working on was set in Qeynos and was a rescue mission for a scout which would lead to an eventual crawl through Splitpaw as a result (at higher level, of course), slowly uncovering more info about an actual war to build on the natural hatred between the Gnolls and Qeynos.

Much of the "dice-rolling" is done by the computer, so I'm not sure how a roleplaying adventure would work in this environment, but it would be interesting to explore.

I would not only support and help run a p99 DnD game night, but would also participate and likely drag nilbog along with me =P

If you want to roleplay...play D&DO or how about busting out that dusty old box of Hero Quest. You wont find RP here sorry.

Greengrocer and I & for ages have talked about playing DnD in the EC tunnel with a group of people lmao. I'm sure other nerds have thought of doing the same. If only I could stop grinding xp for 10 minuets of my dull existence.

I don't really roleplay, but I do try to make use of taverns. "Yeah I'll sell you this, meet me in so-and-so tavern." They're so empty and desolate, and yet you can tell Verant/Sony designed them to be populated by players during downtimes between xp'ing/dungeon crawling/raiding.

I don't do much of the role play myself, but I've run into a few who do. A while back on an alt I ran into a dwarf paladin who asked if he could follow me around to practice his "healin' magics" because he wasn't very good at them... total Scottish brogue the whole time, cheering me on and telling me to "whack 'em good". It was quite entertaining, really :)

a dnd campaign loosely based on everquest sounds pretty good, everquest in a PnP form using its combat and experience formulas without heavy modification sounds boring as shit
"The Grind" is a invention of MMOs to justify a monthly subscription fee

I am pretty new to tabletop gaming, although I've been exposed to it for most of my life. When I posted on D&D 5e forums & such about a homebrewed game like this, a few people suggested the EQ PnP game. They try to adapt much of the MMO to the PnP format and it doesn't work very well IMO.

On the other hand, I love the world of EQ - and I think that's a big reason why a lot of us play on P99 (even if it's infrequently.) Since D&D 5e has simplified so many of the rules for PnP (in a way that encourages both detailed play and broader "theater of the mind" play,) I think it's much easier to make a believable adaptation. I'm not experienced enough to create classes and all, but I am comfortable enough to make some minor adjustments to make it more believable and in line with what we mostly experience in classic EQ.

If anybody is seriously interested in getting something like this together on Roll20, please PM me! I can't say that I'd be able to DM regularly, but maybe twice a month for a few hours is a possibility. If you're willing to be flexible with rules (and/or teach me a thing or two) I'll gladly get the campaign together.

Did anyone ever try this? Caught my eye in a local comic shop a few years back but I never did pick it up.
