Im sorry this is a dumb thread, but I was just wondering if anyone knew the lore of the druid rings in gfay? Like why are they broken down? Wouldnt the woodelf druids fix them up?
I mean theyre so close to the newbie lift, its like they can see them from the guild windows.
why come they didnt just go out there and fix it?
I wonder that about a lot of the ruined, ruins around eq, but that one in perticular seems like there should be some lore behind it.

it's because wizards run the teleportation racket in gfay
they also run the shovel racket

One explanation is that the Druids only are able to use the rings, not create or maintain them. Like the Combine's spires, the knowledge of their creation has been lost to the generations.

The one Wizard in <Dial a Port> was going to go on strike if we didn't shut it down.

I've not found specific lore on them.
I would point out a few things though...
There are more "broken" druid rings in the world. Lfay has like 2+ ... a set by the entrance to MM and a set closer to the Gfay zone line.
The Ranger "Faydark" port on the BP drops you in Lfay right at the Gfay zone line.... of all places.
IF... you were to take into consideration EQII - Gfay ends up with another druid ring set that is functional.
One aspect to this game is that while they try to suggest and make it feel like an "evolving" world... for the most part, things do not change - you (or your character rather) do... So it's simply stuck at a point and most everything is about "what was".
Right now the point is there are several broken port points that would have been awesome to have working. lol.

Those snooty high elves said, "not in our backyard!".
Need more Iksar on that council
joking aside: that would actually be a groovy quest to turn on certain spires/rings. Perhaps with soul bound key to use

Most zones in the old world have druid rings.

Druid ports are generally better situated as it is, devs probably didn't want to give out another decent one.
As far as Faydwer goes wizards only get 1 as it is... why give druids a 3rd? :p

Very true, but I've wondered about those druid rings for a while.
Personally, I think wizards should have a Steamfont & gfay, while druids should have BB and gfay. Those little gnome casters should be able to tinker one up :p

Because the wizard class is much more feasible in groups given their DPS.
As a druid, I think it's an oversight to deny them what was obviously intended at one point.

heh found some nerdy shit on teh webz :)
The Rings were created by the first Elves, before the Wood Elves and High Elves became a seperate race. They were abandoned after the Dark Elves were created and went to war with the "good" elves. This was during the time the original Elven city (now under the Oasis of Mar) was destroyed. Once the Elves relocated to the continent of Faydwer and began to rebuild, they rediscovered the art of teleportation to the Druid rings once again.
The red markings were referred to once by Al'Kabor, but I forget what he remarked about them.
No idea why some rings don't work. I don't think it was ever mentioned.
looks like some other nerd on some other board was trying to find out the same stuff haha!

You dont actually port to the stone ring or spire.
There are points of confluence in space-time in Norrath. Through wise magic or science magic, people can use them for teleportation.
The early druids used wise reflection to discover these principles, and built the rings to mark these locations and honor them as sacred. The early wizards, used arcane science to do the same thing, and built spires to mark them and sometimes magnify them.
This is why you see druid and wizard spires near each other.
This is also why, some places have stone rings, but dont work. The confluence of space-time is gone, but the rings remain. Conversely, places like SFG, that you can port to, without rings, are places with new rifts, that just don't have any localized structure built there yet.
This is what al kabor is always up to --- seeking out these new points with arcane science. You can assume, from a lore standpoint, that the druids are trying to feel for new ones all the time too.

It makes more sense that instead of letting druids port to all of the rings, instead give everyone the ability to look at a book and travel wherever they want.

I think the original Devs wanted to give Wizards a little edge on Druid's even if it was their homeland for certain races. Without the ability to give SoW I hardly ever use a Wizzy unless I am going to Gfay. So I guess that is what it was about??

Assets moved faster than lore, so there will be inconsistencies.
Like, where did the wood for the karana bridge come from? Why is it so big? Why does Innoruuk have a troll face? Who is the Rat King?
I always liked the fact that EQ had a lot of logic early on and little lore... Allowd it to expand.

I can not imagine all the work and code it takes to think up all the faction stuff and quests in a MMO, let alone all the rest of it. I really can't fathom how it is even pulled off. A LOT of imagination sure has to be involved to make it successful.

There is also a ring in Rathe Mountains that has NPC druids around...
And of course, the odd-ball East Karana rings used for the evac...
I've often wondered about the broken rings around. I love that part of the game (and WoW): little flavor accents designed into zones. I appreciate when things are present "just because" or they fit into the landscape, but have no other purpose. A programmer had to put it there.
In Butcherblock Mountains, there are free-standing stone stellae here and there with primitive glyphs. As a dwarf, I like to pretend they are from pre-civilization dwarf cultures that would form Kaladim.

I wonder if there are any stories about weird parties thrown at the chess board in old long lost norrath...
