Similarly, from EQ2...

That there was actually a quest to unlock Froglok as a playable race.

Though that was actually stated by the devs, so I dunno if it qualifies as a "dumb rumor" or just a "bald-faced lie".

Was reading threads tonight and decided I needed to write down as many bizarre rumors / undiscovered quests / former sources of EQ fireside gossip as I could. One thing about EQ is that it was filled with so many strange and mysterious things, and as a kid playing EQ, this is what hooked me.

Some of these were real, some were partially implemented quests, some straight up myths, while some of these rumors were perhaps never fully understood.

- Fiery Avenger

This was such a controversy on the old newsgroup alt.games.the game in pre-PoF days. McQuaid's character, Aradune on Fennin Ro, wields a Flaming F--ing Sword! Omg! That bastard! Just because he made the game doesn't mean he can god-mode! Grr!

Not sure why everyone was so upset. I mean, if it's his game, he can give himself a flaming sword, right? Back then the stats were 35/45 and it procced Inferno Shock. And in post Beta days when the most hardcore weapon was the Razing Sword of Skarlon (25/45?)... This was a big deal.

He also wore a set of Splinted Green armour. So that's a set of Green plate-mail and a fiery Paladin sword outfitted on a ranger, damn!

At this point, there were only a few paladin holy blades in the game... The Ghoulbane, some Holy Truncheon weapon (a quest out of Rathe mountains, I believe) and the recently discovered Soulfire which shared the same graphic. Unfortunately, the Soulfire blew. So needless to say, the community was FILLED with rumors on how to achieve the Avenger.

If anybody remembers any of these rumors, feel free to post them here. Many involved killing Mayong Mistmoore, and other unattainable things. In fact, EQ conspiracy theorists would link together many unachievable aspects of the game as being part of some great, uber quest... usually with something like the Fiery Avenger as the final reward.

I remember lengthy posts from people with 'inside information' (my brother works at that company) about the great quest (first kill the Kraken, take its head to Mayong Mistmoore in a brown paper bag, then kill Mayong. Take both their heads to Veeshan, she'll teleport you to fight Aradune himself, if you win u get his sword... honestly guys)

With Plane of Air came the "real" Fiery Avenger quest, which uber guilds quickly jumped on (had to kill Miragul the Lich in the Everfrost Caves). When Kunark was released with the epics, the Fiery Avenger was just a quest-piece to get the much better Fiery Defender.

- Razing Sword of Skarlon

On the same note, EQ'Lizer released the newly discovered Razing Sword of Skarlon on their site sometime around May or June of 1999. The guild that leaked its existence refused to name where it came from due to the immense power of the weapon (lol). However, they did say it was from a 50+ monster that took multiple groups to kill.

Rumors abound. Maybe from King Ak'anon? Or the giant lizard Allizewsaur? Or maybe even... the KRAKEN?

As it turns out, Warlord Skarlon dropped it. Fancy a guess a mob named "Skarlon" is going to drop a sword with the same name. But I suppose Nagafen raids were still rare enough back then that nobody knew to put these pieces together.

- The Kraken

Can't go by without mentioning the Kraken in the Ocean of Tears. Now keep in mind there were other Kraken sightings, including in Lake Rathetear and Erud's Crossing. But, most information on the forums concerned OOT.

Just like some paranormal creatures in real life, there were plenty of sightings but no proof (why no simple screenshot?!). Entering OOT for the first time, I recall being paranoid the Kraken would eat my poor character.

Eventually the consensus was that the Kraken existed in Beta, hence how people came up with this idea, but it was taken out after launch.

But here's the kicker. Despite claims that it was in Beta, there are still no screenshots in existence. So, nobody even knows what monster graphic the "Kraken" used. And if there were no screenshots in Beta, it begs the question... did it even exist in the first place?

My theory was no. It was complete bunk. It spread viral across EQ forums but it had no weight behind it, or else a screenshot from beta would have been procured. But please prove me wrong, if you have a screenshot show me!

- Ice Comet

In pre PoF days the Ice Comet was a mythical status spell. I don't think the quest was added until Paineel came out. So, how did people know about it? If I recall, I believe Lady Vox would sometimes drop it. Since Vox spawns once a week, required an army to kill, and Ice Comet was a rare drop, this mythical status was well deserved. Maybe 7 or 8 total players on EQ had the spell before the quest giver in Everfrost appeared.

Mayong Mistmoore

Another legendary myth like the Kraken. You know of the foreboding tower as you enter Mistmoore? Well few knew the secret to getting up there. Those that did told tales of the ruler of Mistmoore dwelling within. This sent chills into this level 20 noob visiting the dungeon for the first time.

Mistmoore even had his own mythical loot-table. He dropped the Fanged Skull Stiletto. I forget the stats, but it was really good.

Same with the Kraken, Mistmoore was an apparent beta-spawn. But, just like the Kraken, I've seen no proof of a Mistmoore NPC even in Beta. The only time Mistmoore has ever appeared is during a couple of GM events back in the day. Mistmoore was a GM controlled dark elf I believe, who opened up a can of whoop ass.

Otherwise, I don't think Mistmoore was ever a static NPC spawn with a loot-table. Only Garton Viswin (?) spawned in the tower. His rare was the Chestplate of the Dark Flame, which was also mythical in its own right.

- The Blackburrow Tunnel

I gotta include this one for laughs. First week of playing EQ the talk of Halas was that Blackburrow had a secret tunnel that connected ALL the way to the other gnoll dungeon, Splitpaw. The tunnel was in the Razorgill water pit, but it was hidden.

Razorgills murdered my ass when I tried to find it. Players were so adamant that it existed that I continued to believe in it until I realized a tunnel that long would be unfeasible, unless it was a transporter.

- Plane of Underfoot

Runnyeye Citadel after beta was such a strange and unexplored zone that rumors of things like a hidden passage into Brell Serilis' domain continued probably until at least Kunark. In an early guild I organized an expedition into Runnyeye to try and discover this El Dorado and other rumors. Our search team discovered a passage through the water near where the Dazed Goblin Knight spawned (the long room). At the bottom was a metal grate that we could swim through and enter some weird room. But it was empty. As we swam out, a bug trapped all of us inside of the metal grate and everyone drowned to death, and we had to call a GM to rescue us. Fun times.

I should mention the rumors continued with Brell Serilis' plane being part of, you guessed it, the Fiery Avenger quest.

- The Lavastorm Nightmare

A rare instance when an EQ cryptozoologist discovers the mythical rumors are actually true. Indeed, even before nightmares were introduced when PoF launched, the graphic existed in Lavastorm Mountains as the UBER rare spawn -- the level 20 black horse of death.

The nightmare dropped some kind of Nightmare Hide, graphics of a bear skin, and it procced a spell when you right clicked it. Playing EQ for over 6 years, I only saw the nightmare ONCE. To this day I'm curious if it had any undiscovered even rarer drops. I'd guesstimate the Nightmare was 5x rarer than the Terrorantula

- Dunedigger / Rahotep

Similar to the Nightmare, these guys were crazy rare, but real. The Scepter of Rahotep fetched a pretty penny at EC. Never saw Dunedigger in all my years on EQ. However I killed Rahotep maybe twice, picking up his Scarab Ring (+ all resists)

- Kedge Keep

This whole zone had a mythical status during early-days. I recall the EQ'Lizer website first busted the zone open when somebody used an explore-EQ style program to take a bunch of photos of the interior. The reason the big guilds never bothered with the place is that it had no loot-table until around when Paineel launched. So, nobody knew anything about the place. I was awe-inspired by Kedge and wanted desperately to get high enough level to explore the place and find undiscovered treasure.

- Mysterious geography

There were a lot of strange and hidden places. Where do the lava tunnels in the deepest depths of Solusek B go? Or the underwater caves in Lake Rathetear? These questions always invoked people's imaginations.

- King Xorbb

I just have to mention Xorbb. I played EQ for years and never saw Xorbb. Most people knew where he spawned. on that bloody throne in Gorge of King Xorbb, guarded by the two named-evil eyes.

Sometimes Lord Soptvyl would appear there. But never Xorbb and his elusive Slime Crystal Staff and the rest of the mysterious items on his loot table that I've never seen with my own eyes.

Anyone have any real stories of encountering Xorbb?

- NPC Guildmasters / Kings

The King of Kaladim, guildmasters, and other city NPCs were very hard to kill. Nobody ever did it. So rumors were abound that they had rare loot tables, or were part of bigger clandestine quests.

All I know specifically is the monk guildmasters would sometimes drop black sashes. Newbie monks, of course, did sash quests as they leveled, and the final "test" was to defeat your own master and earn his sash. Never saw one of these sashes, however.

- The Blued Two Handed Hammer

I had to save this one for last. A quest so puzzling that it always bordered between the real, and the unreal. Attempting to solve the quest would drive many adventurers mad.

Most would agree that it began, or involved, the visiting Priestess of Najena. I believe she would sometimes drop a block of blue clay, or something of that sort. She'd also babble something in Dark Elvish, which held clues to the quest.

Exploring EQ lore, we learn of the origin of the Goblins. Each Goblin race was apparently represented by a staff that dated back to their creation by someone like Brell or Rallos Zek (I can't remember any of these details). But the staffs were in game.

The story went further and further. A lot of players found clues by talking to NPCs in Neriak and elsewhere. The priestess had some clandestine purpose in Najena, which detective quest-solvers figured out and created elaborate posts about on sites like Everlore.

I don't remember too many more details except most staffs were accessible from rare spawns in the Goblin dungeons. The Fire and Ice Crystal staffs were no big deal to find. But the problem was the Slime Crystal Staff.

We knew that Xorbb dropped the staff, but Xorbb is / was so rare that it was futile. The second rumor suggested that Slime Elementals in Runnyeye dropped the staff.

In search of the staff, I camped the Slime Elemental for a very long time (this was before slimer had the graphic of a gelatinous cube... he used to look like a fire elemental). I never did find the staff, and therefore could never finish the blued hammer quest.

In the end, I believe those who finally did retrieve the hammer found it was a piece of crap.... some 20/40 weapon. But, I don't think that was even the point... The goal was to just say you did it.

There's 2 firepots on Antonica: one in Neriak 3rd Quarter (out on a peninsula in the water area) and one deep in Qeynos Catacombs. They're both 1 way teleporters. Click on the one in Neriak, it takes you to the firepot in the dark elf camp in Lesser Faydark (by Mistmoore). Click on the one in Qeynos Catacombs, it takes you to a firepot in one of the heretic huts in Toxxuila Forest. They are now "locked" but as far as I know cannot be picked.

This is a good one. I forgot people used to say this.

One that I had that is probably not very common involved Ak'Anon and the Red V quest. If you kill obsolete clockworks + Red V you can get an item to turn into a guy near the entrance of Ak'Anon that usually resulted in some patchwork armor, few gold, rusty weapons, etc.

Occasionally, you would be awarded a Bullsmasher (http://wiki.project1999.com/Bull_Smasher), which was this awesome 6/20 NON-MAGIC weapon for small races.

The rumor was if you did this enough times you'd summon the King of Ak'Anon and he would award you a magic version of the Bullsmasher that was 7/20 (and better than a SSoY!).

I can't tell you how many times I did that quest. It was more than likely something that somebody made up in Steamfont on my server.

The truck rumor probably began because of the existence of the truck. There's no way to use strength at this point in the game, however. Even if you traded for something WITH strength, I'm fairly certain you require the badge from Koga or something to use it.

There were too many theories on how to spawn several very rare spawns to even keep track of. Two that come to mind were the Ancient Cyclops in SRO and Quillmane. I'm not sure if any of these theories ever turned out to be correct, but some of them were flat out ridiculous. One I remember about the AC was something to do with killing all mobs in one of the towers at a certain time of day.

Camping a rare spawn caused it to spawn less.

Short races got hit less than large races (they're smaller therefore harder to hit!)

There were all sorts of theories about what each stat did since they were never really explained. To this day I'm not entirely sure what DEX and AGI do. I remember some people also thought that having a low CHA value made fear spells work better.

I was a guide for a few years on live and here are a some stories that GMs told me:

1. The GM hangout “Sunset Home” used to be in the Plane of Air. Once players got access to the Plane, an enchanter was able to go to a certain island, and then use Gravity Flux to fling them up to the GM home. In the GM home there are vendors that sell just about any item in the game, and vendors that sell guide only equipment (100% resurrection gloves and an invincibility ring for example.) Using alliance spells, the enchanter was able to buy these items on a player character.

This stunt caused Sunset Home to be moved to its own zone, and they added a hidden flag to GM equipment: RADIOACTIVE. If a player equips it, it instantly kills them.

2. In all of the zones there is a special “developer’s box” at coordinates 0,0,0. They are just grey box rooms with no doors or exits. One of the boxes has a clue to a GM only quest written on the wall.

3. There is a hidden prison, I think under Rathe Mountains, that Senior Guides can bind really obnoxious players to when there is no GM around to issue a ban/kick. The prison has no exit, and you can't use any abilities, items, or spells.

4. If you use the /kill command on a player, you lose your steward flag and all mobs in the zone will agro you.

5. The default model for mobs is a human male. The Sleeper's model wasn't finished before a guild was able to spawn him, so he spawned as a giant naked human.

6. There is a High Elf NPC Necromancer someplace. This is because High Elves originally were supposed to be able to be Necromancers and Shadow Knights. A path on the East zone wall of Greater Faydark leads to a cave that was supposed to be their area.

7. Unrest was originally much larger. Devs thought it was "too big" so they just put a wall around the courtyard and first house. If you get on top of the house and levitate over the wall, you'll see the rest of Unrest.

Sphinxes in Rathe too. They were always a huge rumor mill. I recall reading some dev interview that they were for the original fiery avenger quest which was broken and eventually rewritten into its current state. Could be another rumor though!!

LOL or like if you stood on a certain floor panel in the room it would activate a named to spawn instead of normal mob.

There are a few zones with GM boxes. They don't all have coordinates. The VP one for example, has cats.

3. There is a hidden prison, I think under Rathe Mountains, that Senior Guides can bind really obnoxious players to when there is no GM around to issue a ban/kick. The prison has no exit, and you can't use any abilities, items, or spells.

No idea about a prison in RM, but there is a prison in Qeynos Catacombs where they would summon/bind players. It was just a tiny square tube (maybe 5 steps by 5 steps) with no ceiling.

5. The default model for mobs is a human male. The Sleeper's model wasn't finished before a guild was able to spawn him, so he spawned as a giant naked human.

This is how the game is coded. The player has specific NPC models enabled for each individual zone. Like, if you tried to dbspawn a frost giant in EC, it would likely come out as a giant naked human male because thats the default for any NPCtype where the client does not have the correct files for the zone. The default EQ install does (and did) have some extra models enabled for some zones meaning either oversight or incomplete content!

Anti-camp radius!

This was actually implemented according to Prathun. I believe it was for a spawn in Najena.

I can vouch for this one. Way back in the day I installed EQ on a new PC and Im not sure how or why but when I logged in to play ALL mobs appeared as naked male humans.

When the sleeper awakens he rampages every zone on Norrath, starting with EC

No myth, true story. Only if he awakes and guild wipes within certain amount of time from what I heard. Xev server, I remember being in Velks and everyone was spammed with about 20 lines of red text followed by loading please wait... theres an MPEG of it floating on Youtube somewhere.

Not sure if counts as a rumour but something cool that I liked was the GM private zone, a white circular zone, probably the size of an arena, with steps into a middle courtyard and clicky pictures of every city (not that they needed them). I got summoned there once by accident for about 10 seconds before the dude realised what he did. Looked pretty cool and had a sick zone name but it escapes me.

Using piercing or slashing weapons would yield lower chance to get high quality pelts as opposed to blunt weapons.
I think this was to do with the low drop rate for HQ pelts; players would try to find any pattern which increased their chances and that one actually sounded almost plausible...

The only trouble is that nobody knows if the cats are alive or dead.

It depends on what interpretation of QM you subscribe to. Copenhagen would say asking which state it exists in is nonsensical. It is existing in many states simultaneously. Observation causes a deterministic collapse of the wave-function. In other words, reality is in the observation not the cat.

Many worlds theory would also have the cat dead and alive simultaneously. The key difference is that the wave function doesnt collapse. Putting the cat in a box created multiple universes within the multiverse. Ones with dead cats and ones with live cats. When you observe you see which cat world you live in.

There are quite a few other interpretations of the nature of quantum mechanics but I will spare you.

3. There is a hidden prison, I think under Rathe Mountains, that Senior Guides can bind really obnoxious players to when there is no GM around to issue a ban/kick. The prison has no exit, and you can't use any abilities, items, or spells.

.

This is actually based on some fact. Not the no use ablities etc just that some zones had weird "jail" areas in them....

I was stuck in one of these boxes in The Warrens. I am not sure if I didn't have the right expansion or the right files or what not at the time, but I zoned into the warrens and the game crashed, when i logged back in I was in this Box with weird writing on the walls, no way out, had to petition and some guide (i assume maybe a gm) came to me and said, wow this is interesting, than proceeded to summon me to the stonebrunt mtn side of the warrens instead of Paineel. Had a real problem getting back as I was still in my teens at the time.

Wow these bring back so many memories, especially the Kraken in Lake Rathe, many a trips i feared that would be the moment i would get killed. Some of the weird ones i never heard of, but the firepot one makes sense, since they do exist. I thought the Sleeper rampaging all zones was true, i can't remember if it ever happened, but i remember hearing about it.

Interesting thread, those kind of things always bring back memories of classic EQ, the awe, the fear, the endless wonder. It would be nice if the Ultra rare spawns weren't so rare, but i guess then they would lose their magic, still it's one aspect of the game that makes you pull your hair out.

? No it isn't.

Throughout much of the twentieth century the Copenhagen interpretation had overwhelming acceptance among physicists. Although astrophysicist and science writer John Gribbin described it as having fallen from primacy after the 1980s,[34] according to a poll conducted at a quantum mechanics conference in 1997,[35] the Copenhagen interpretation remained the most widely accepted specific interpretation of quantum mechanics among physicists. In more recent polls conducted at various quantum mechanics conferences, varying results have been found.[36][37][38] Often, as is the case with the 4 referenced sources, the acceptance of the Copenhagen interpretation as the preferred view of the underlying nature was below 50% amongst the surveyed.

From wikipedia  but yknow. Best I could find.

The CI is very unsatisfying to a lot of people, because it just punts the deeper questions by saying 'it is not meaningful to talk about it'. It's an accurate reflection of QM itself, in that it is description only, with no underlying explanation.

I don't know if anyone knew about this or talked about it during live, but I've been wondering about the locked doors in VP and whether they had or were supposed to have clickable triggers to open them.

Most of the dragon lairs have clickable objects that move when you click them, like a pile of gold that spins or a chest that spins, etc. One of the doors at PD (not a locked one) is activated by clicking a fire pot. Since Nexona is the only dragon with a lair that isn't behind a locked door, my guess is that there was an intended order to the dragons, where Nexona's lair had a trigger to open the Xygoz door, and Nexona and Xygoz had triggers for the two locked doors leading to Druushk, etc., with PD last.

It would make sense since PD is the obvious end boss of VP but is neither at the end of the zone nor the hardest to get to, and you don't have to kill the other dragons to kill PD.

Hey guys, first time user here. Read this thread and couldn't resist.

The rumor I paid most attention to was the Frontier Mountains "cycle" rumor. I'm pretty sure there is a lot of truth to this, but I could never get down a good rotation for it.

It basically consisted of using a RNG/DRU to track certain, specially named mobs. IIRC, one was like "A goblin dustscryer," etc. Basically, there were three regions: NE, SE, and SW, and killing a specially named mob in one of those areas would immediately pop a specially named mob in one of the other areas. There were supposedly some pretty good drops (Dustscryer's Crystal Ball), etc. Not sure if that's only on live or here.

A long time ago on live, on my first trip to Kunark, a dark elf passenger on the boat convinced me that if I didn't jump off of the boat before it reached the Overthere docks, NPCs at the docks would see me and kill me. Now to be fair there are a lot of evil NPCs in that fort that would eat me in a couple of bites, so it's not necessarily a BAD idea to jump ship a little early, it's just that you don't HAVE to because the NPCs aren't close enough to where the ship docks to see you.

Maybe it was me taking the term "kill on sight" too literally, but I definitely believed that staying on the boat meant certain death. From that day forward, I *always* stayed at my keyboard the entire time I would travel to OT, bail at the dock wall and swim to the hill near the big cliff golem.

It wasn't until I accidentally AFKd on the boat here on p99 (and survived several round-trips) that I realized nobody boards the boat and kills you.

Hey guys, first time user here. Read this thread and couldn't resist.

The rumor I paid most attention to was the Frontier Mountains "cycle" rumor. I'm pretty sure there is a lot of truth to this, but I could never get down a good rotation for it.

This is a real thing: http://wiki.project1999.com/Frontier_Mountains

The original GM hangout was isle 8 (drakes), so this wouldn't have been possible. Source: was a guide from release until Luclin. The radioactive flag was present from release, because they were lazy and couldn't figure out how to simply block players from looting or using GM items.

3. There is a hidden prison, I think under Rathe Mountains, that Senior Guides can bind really obnoxious players to when there is no GM around to issue a ban/kick. The prison has no exit, and you can't use any abilities, items, or spells.

These are the cat rooms in Befallen and Qeynos Catacombs. As far as I've understood it, the rooms were leftover resources that never got removed from the game files. Some creative thinking (one might say.. out of the box) by a GM led to their use as prisons.

4. If you use the /kill command on a player, you lose your steward flag and all mobs in the zone will agro you.

This was true - using /kill on a player would cause everything in the zone to aggro on you. I think this also happened if you used it on a vendor NPC, but I can't remember. This was a great way to piss off your GM because vendors do not path back to their spawn and don't work unless they're standing at their spawn point. This meant that you either had to manually fix each vendor (attack, kite to spawn, GM memblur), or repop the zone.

Other weird shit:

- Live froglok king had some dialogue if you charmed it and asked "What sword". It didn't go anywhere and there wasn't any other dialogue that I ever saw, but it was there. I always assumed that this was left over from the original FA quest. I wish I could find a screenshot of this somewhere, but my Google fu is failing me atm.
- The Akhevan language was fun in Luclin. Some of the mobs in Luclin were named with, and spoke, this language. The bosses in Vex Thal were all named in the language as well. Kaas Thox Xi Ans Dyek = Black Blood of the Earth. Not really applicable to P99, but here's a link to the Safehouse thread where people finally translated everything: http://www.thesafehouse.org/forums/forum/everquest-wing/quests-of-norrath/8784-akhevan-translations-link-to-dictionary-added
- The lava tunnels under Dragon Necropolis. I explored these as a guide and they always seemed too deep for players to access. There were also some lava snakes down there if I remember correctly.
- The wyvern cave in Western Wastes. There was a named that spawned in here, but I never heard of anyone killing it or what it dropped. Never went here on my player character, but I did once see a group killing stuff there on my guide. They lasted about 15 minutes until Harla Dar aggro'd on them from above. Guess people did kill him eventually, here's the P99 wiki page: http://wiki.project1999.com/Tsiraka
