View Full Version : What is it about Specs?

I keep seeing level 47-49 necros and SK's camping spectors that are 10 or so levels lower than them. Why is that? Is there something that specs drop that they need?

They're good money, and easy for necros/SKs as undead, and have low health (great for any solo class).
Bigger fact is, not a ton of options in classic. I recommend them for mages 44-48, if you can ever find oasis/feerrott camp open, and many other solo capable classes kill them.

Even when they're light blue, they'll regularly yield 1% EXP to players. As others have said, they're rather good cash as well.

i must have gotten a hold of some cheap spectres then. I FINALLY found the ones in Feerrott uncamped about 2 weeks ago. I said to myself "cool, finally got specs this will be great" I needed some money and have heard rave reviews. Killed the one outside and first 2 inside...got about a plat off of each, 1 rusty and 2 bronze scythes. Left and went to sol A and murdered gnomes and cleaned up. I figured they would at least dropped FS.

This isn't true (a quad of light blues gave less than 1% to my Bard when he was level 48 or 49, I forget which).

This is also not true.
They're really good money and extremely easy to kill. It's also very easy to get the top tower in Oasis because most people can't take 3 spectres at once, so if you're a Bard/Wizard/Druid, then you have yourself an easy, effortless camp for money. My Bard spent roughly 3 whole levels camping specs (not in a row though) and I'd estimate he made about 5-6K in the process. Basically, they're a good alternative for classes who can't solo seafuries efficiently.

They tend to drop "Scythe"s (which sell for 12p), fire opals, opals, peridots, and all sorts of decent gems. The money really does add up if you do it over a reasonable amount of time. Also, the spectres in oasis drop more pocket change (not sure if this is intended or not), so you get specs dropping 5-6 platinum fairly often, along with their juicy vendor items.

Spectres are good because of their low HP. It makes them quick kills so you can fit a ton of them into a 6 minute time frame and then they start popping again. They are terribly boring though and the cash is not good (I don't care what people say). The cash is terribly bad in OOT/Feerrott if you can't sell the Scythes.

5-6K in three levels .. Post-40 I am assuming... is pretty terrible.
My shaman made over 1k between levels 10 and 16 alone while exp-ing. People don't kill Spectres for cash. You don't see level 50s ever killing specs unless they are grouped with someone below level 50 who needs help with exp.

Why would you not be able to sell the Scythes in either of those places? The vendors in OOT are super close, and there are vendors in Feerrott too. I guess if you're a druid/non-evil wizard, fine, but a Bard can always use the DE illusion mask in Feerrott to sell if they want. Maybe the money isn't *amazing* compared to farming seafuries, but some classes just don't have that option. Name me a better money-making option for a Bard.

To be clear, I don't know how long it was because I killed specs intermittantly while going back and forth to royals and shit like that, and one of the levels was a hell level (45). Also, that's not "terrible" because the levels went by extremely fast. I doubt you made 1K from levels 10-16 extremely quickly, you probably spent insane amounts of time selling to people in EC or something like that.

Not everyone can sell in Feerrott ... also the vendors are no where near the spectre caves. If you want to leave the camp to go sell you are just inviting people to come take your camp and you weren't present at it.
The problem in OOT is that you pretty much have to be a quad class to kill them. It isn't a very good camp. Between dodging skeletons, having to pull 4 at once (unless you have lull/fd) it is a pretty terrible camp.
Also I did not sell anything on EC on my shaman. It was like week 3 into the server's life (late october) and there was no economy. The secret is... Don't run to oasis to level. Leveling near Qeynos has much better options for exp and cash. It took my shaman like 1-2 days to level 10-16 and I made over 1k in the process on kills alone.
I still say spectres fucking suck. They are good for exp and exp only. The only time cash is good is when you get a random good gem or something. Once your weight reduction bags are filled with the good scythes, unless you want to leave your camp unattended and open to someone stepping in, you aren't gonna sell them.

Most of what you say is pretty reasonable, but you have yet to provide a better money-making option for Bards, or even other quad classes.

I don't follow EC prices honestly but I am assuming you could make out pretty good by killing named creatures in SolA. Even if you are getting low price items like CGS, CGB, Fire Staff etc. Still be stuff that is worth around 400-500pp which is the same as getting 33-41 of the 12pp Scythes each time you get a low price item like that.
Every time I go to SolA to ban IP infraction people.. the place is empty.
PS: People who two-box. Please continue going to SolA to powerlevel your "wife." I fully enjoy the easy bans.

fine steel?.cause the bronze scythes were 3p and change?....are the ones in OOT, oasis, and feerrott all on the same loot table?

Not fine steel. Its literally just "scythe" and vendors for 12p. Yes, they are all on the same loot table. You're luck might have just been bad. Try it for more then 2-3 kills. Give it an hour, and youll see the average cash is pretty decent.

Specs are good because they are decent plat and really easy to kill and level quickly off of.
as a necro, i went from 40(2blues in) to 46 (about half the level finished) in less than 16hrs. my total time was 16hrs 40mins when i logged but about an hour and a half of that was spent waiting for the camp in oasis to open.
Now during that roughly 15hrs or so of doing them i got 2 hell levels done and some easier ones. I only made 3.5k off the gems/jewelry that i picked up. I let newbies come and clean the scythes b/c i didn't have DMF and didn't want to swim overweight to sell and have someone snatch the specs.
So if you want to level quickly and make some decent plat i'd say wait an hour and lock them down. Especially if you can levi over the water and have sow/jboots.
P.s. I did specs from 46-49 too. They were still the best exp to solo imo as when you have them, people usually don't mess with you. Well the didn't mess with me lol.
