Back on live as a way to make money I used to haul fine steel out of guk, so encumbered that I moved at a snail's pace, to the vendors in Oasis. As a way to make room for one more I put my Mithril 2Hander(that I recently spent all my platinum on) into my inventory so I could equip a 1hander and shield.
I then proceeded to vendor the Mithril 2Hander. The vendor was full and it did not show up. Then I borrowed money to buy up as much vendor crap as possible, hoping it would appear, but it didn't.

Tonight I was waiting on a rez, so I was pokin' around in WFP. I meet this little party animal named Lady Shae hiding in a local Inn.
http://wiki.project1999.com/images/Npc_lady_shae.png
She asks me to buy her some wine, and being a gentleman I'm like.. ok sure.. but I dont tell her I'm outa cash (waiting on arez and all) so I make a run for the newbie hunting grounds and gather up a few Orc pawns to kill, maybe I'll get lucky, see a decaying skelly with a cracked staff....
So I round up a few and cast my AoE rain spell on them (cus I'm smart, I wana make sure I do this quick and smart) and there standing in front of 2 other dudes, Shadowdinah and some A-team guy who were goofing off standing on a tent, just as the 3 of us lock eyes, my lvl 57 barb dies to a train of like 4 orc pawns and 2 decaying skeletons and my AoE Rain Spell in the newbie hunting grounds.
All to get some faction with the Lady Shae.. (the felguard (http://wiki.project1999.com/FelGuard).. who aparently is only her)
Welp gents, if you wana impress an easy NPC lady in WFP.. you can find her in the Inn by the wizard guild...
She's outa my league. :(

I can't state any specific example, but while leveling my necro or farming on my shaman, there's been dozens of times I get too focused on exp lust, loot lust, or just being over committed to keeping the respawn timers ideal so that I could AFK 20+ minutes between pops. What ends up happening every so often is I push the limit too far and I'm not in over my head... until I realize that I don't have mana to FD, or I didn't canni+torpor early enough and I'm sitting at 2% mana and 290hp, leaving me no room to canni up some mana for a heal. It's the worst when you know the death is coming, you know it's just matter of time and you've passed the event horizon and it's just pulling you down down down....
One stupid thing I did that paid off, I took a train of about 5 mobs at NG on my shaman, there was no way I was going to camp, and the necrosis scarab was extremely low, like 4% or something. I was lootdrunk as usual, kept meleeing + jbb spamming, got him down, looted him while the wizard was nuking me, and managed to gate out, SoW up, and get back down to camp, muttering about monks.

I had a Paladin Friend, and one day he asked to help him do a step for his epic. I didn't know anything about the quest, but he was a friend so I hopped over to help him.
The quest was to kill a mob outside FP so I thought I'd be safe and bind INSIDE THE Guards Barracks in FP. There was only a small group so it got a little hairy, we killed everything, but somehow I died. (I blame Lag)
It took about 10 deaths before I realized I was KoS in the worst possible place and pulled the plug on the computer. I wasn't an alt nut at the time so I had to create a character send a tell, get a friend to drag me out and get a res.
I thought the whole guild was going to die laughing.

this topic pops up about once a year or so...anyway for me, on Live back in late 1999, i accidentally gave my pet my manastone....I was spamming it and my computer starting to lag out on me, going at a snails pace...in the frantic motion of clicking on the stone, i somehow managed to move my cursor over my pet and give it to him
i felt so embarrased i did that, that i didnt tell anyone in my group at the time, also note that this was well after they stopped dropping...i was so heart broken i think i quit, i later realized i could have just petitioned and gotten it back, i never got it back though...i waited too long to petition
oh to make this every more funny, i got my manastone for a pair of silver plated leggings, lol...some dude traded me his stone for the legs, then a couple weeks later the stone got removed from the drop table, i guess whoever did that trade, that would be his dumbest EQ moment, lol

Fallen asleep while on the Maiden's Voyage. Losing your body in Timorous Deep is no joke, especially when you have no idea when it happened.
On live, pre-Kunark. I was playing my L22-ish Paladin at way off-peak hours (under 200 server pop iirc). Rode the boat from EFP to BBM, couldn't find a bind, said fuckit and went to solo in Unrest. Less than an hour later I'm naked in Arena. Ran back naked thru the southern route, took the boat back to BBM. Then I went full retard, headed straight back to Unrest, looted up and started soloing again while still bound in Arena. Soon I had the opportunity to verify that the run from Arena to BBM without SoW could be done in less than an hour and a half.

So, I just did it a while back. I used a bard to charm the mob for the monk robe turn-in and charm broke. But here's where it gets really bad. You know how sometimes when you cancel a trade the item poofs until you relog? I looked at my inventory and didn't see the robe and so i camped out. The next day I realized that the robe was in my inventory. Had i realized that all i had to do was recamp i could have come back and handed in the robe and gotten the whistling fists robe. Now i'm stuck on red without anyway to get another pawbuster because KC is a cluster fuck and i'm just sitting here with my dick in my hand.

Back when I first started playing in 1999 I started with a human warrior. A buddy had given me a mino axe and a GLS because you really couldnt see at night back then. I was running around EC at level 4. I accidentally dropped my Mino Axe on the ground and couldnt see it. So I thought. Ill drop my lightstone so it will light up the ground. No axe and no Light couldnt find my way back so I started a new Char.

And I had no idea how to find the wizard trainer in Felwithe so I just ran back to Akanon to train it. Good times.

Back in beta phase 2 I rolled up my first character...a barb warrior. I spent the next few nights killing spiders, goblins, and polar bears. I collected every single thing that dropped, sold it, and bought rough leather armor. Before long I was completely geared and so proud I was able to smash multiple mobs at a time.
A few days later, my roommate notices I am still in everfrost peaks. He starts laughing and informs me that I am no longer getting experience for killing spiders. It is then I learned that everfrost wasnt the only zone, con color matters, and collecting spider legs was a bad business plan if I ever planned on buying that shiny combine 2hander I was eyeing.
Being clued in, I set off to find blackburrow. After "feeling" my way through the tunnel that leads there I zone in. I begin to bash gnoll after gnoll, amazed they dropped so much coin and sometimes armor or a weapon. Filled with bloodlust I jump off the edge thinking I will fight my way back up since most of the gnolls were pushovers at this point.
As I drop past the second floor I must have caught aggro off a roamer. I hit the water and start exploring, killing gnolls along the way. Halfway into the second fight I notice gnolls are running around in mass, up and down ramps, slaughtering other players as they try to flee.
At this point I am thinking, "gnolls must not like water" since I am swimming around and they arent attacking me. Other players are screaming in shout for help only to be silenced moments later. I yell back to them to jump into the water where it is "safe".
Roughly 20 seconds later...I learn my next lesson in EQ. I cant tell you the fear I felt as I watched 50% of blackburrow heading my way. I figured there was no way to ever retrieve that corpse so I didnt. Lucky for me I had all that money (under 5pp) from spider legs to buy another sword and set of leather armor. Fun times.

Running through Kithicor and forgetting to invis before running into rivervale where I was kos.

at this point right now in eq I have no idea whats going on but Im pretty sure looking back at it Im going to think it was one of the stupidest things Ive ever done on my character..
I remember my first character ever was a gnome magician named Cenliken (circa 2000). Around lvl 10, I decided to explore befallen. While killing all the low level skeletons on the first floor, I discovered a well. While inspecting this well, I accidentally fell down it, and got destroyed by some ghouls and mummies upon landing.
While trying to retrieve my corpse, I discovered the locked doors. I had no idea about keys, or how to obtain them. I felt so embarrassed from what happened, I didn't ask anyone for help. I ended up re-rolling a DE SK which I mained for the remainder of my EQ live days.

Was level 7 on my first toon in crushbone. A wood elf ranger. I had a full set of visible banded thanks to begging. Some guy was suppose to trade me a green made broadsword for my full set of armor. I agreed on this solely because the sword looked awesome. He then "tricked" me by putting in some rusty 2hander in trade and I gave away my full set. I stood at the entrance of crushbone devastated. Shamed and embarrassed i re rolled a dwarf war and never looked back

I came to p99 pretty much a noob to EQ, having only watched it be played back during classic days.
I had bound Filbus at Kaladim and was trying to level in Unrest, due to the suggestion of Kekephee and my brother. I remember one time I was stoned out of my mind and got slain in the main room of 1st floor. That wasn't the bad part.
It would take me, on average, 15 mins to get back to Dagnor's Cauldron. By the time I got to Dag's, I would, a level 16 warrior, naked, no SoW, no lev, no invis, try to cross that hellscape. The problem was that I was too stoned to make sense of where I was. Time after time, I got lost traversing Dag's, only to be slain by a goblin tidal lord, or Bristlebane save me, a powerful undead skeleton.
After my fifth or sixth death I was feeling like crying. Kekephee was super mad because I couldn't get back to our group, and I had lost a level. Then I smoked another joint and it was all grooooovy

Stembolt gave me a FS weapon when I was leveling in Misty Thicket. I promptly sold it for the 6pp.

Innumerable deaths.
Not knowing about using halfling racial sneak to sneak-pull until high 50's. (read: lots of wiped groups when I was forced to pull)

I think there were a couple of options on verifying original account owner. The Original CC # used for first billing, is what they asked for, with some accounts I had compromised on live.

Loaned my wife and I's accounts with high lv raid geared characters after having stopped playing for a long time to a very close RL friend so he could power level himself with their assistance. Instead he stripped every tradable item off of them and tried to claim he "gave away" the accounts later when I asked why the password was changed.
After a bit of time I remembered I was the one who set up his email... and he never changed the pw. Using his webmail, I gained access to his account and found all our stuffs.

No longer a friend.

Interesting story, funnily enough almost the same thing happened to one of my friends back in early vanilla WoW days. Some people are just awful when it comes to pixel greed lol, kind of crazy. I hope you at least found some interesting stuff to screw with in his email.

I can't think of anything super specific, but recently I decided to try my hand at a Ranger (which was my first melee ever). I got into my 50's, being pretty heavily twinked without doing too much grouping, and when I finally did, the enchanter kept complaining about someone breaking mezzes. I eventually realized it was me, and while tabbing through names during tell hell, I was also cycling trough targets. Oops...

Fun times.

Nuke...head starts lowering to the keyboard....head pops up....disoriented, better nuke.....head starts drooping...head snaps up, better nuke again.....head slumps...head pops up again, a lot more slowly this time, just about to nuke again and hear lots of chatter in TS (mostly wtf's). My vision clears and I've ported my whole group to Sky....Why I even had port to sky memmed is my second mistake. The old fellas still chuckle about that to this day when I log in sometimes.

I've died more time to leaving Lich on while I afk than I have in combat.
Cecily
11-24-2014, 06:54 PM
Way back when Cecily was a little rogue, lv 14 I think, I died in Unrest one night. I was bound in Freeport, dumb, so I rode the boat to Butcher Block and ran back to Dagnor's Cauldron, one of my most hated zones for a good reason. I decided that sneaking around the circle would take too long as a rogue so I tried swimming straight to Unrest. That didn't work out well and something red quickly caught me in the water. I left another corpse in the lake and woke up in Freeport again.
That second death freaked me out because my corpse was surely at the bottom of a very deep body of water that I'd probably drown getting to. So I thought about it for a moment and using my best low level player logic I decided I'd max swimming to help with the CR. So I swam in circles for a lengthy period of time in Freeport before taking my second boat ride to Faydwer.
I finally got back to the Cauldron, absolutely frazzled and angry. Waiting there was a high level rogue I had been chatting with during the CR(s). Much to my suprise, he passed me a backpack filled with a complete set of visible Ravenscale armor. Ravager has always been my rogue hero since then. Finally, at that point it dawned on me that the corpse in the lake was naked and I didn't have to CR it at all. I had spent 45 mins training swimming for nothing. I got my stuff from Unrest, and I managed to die once more at the tents near BB thinking they were a safe spot. I distinctly remember having Ravager drag one of my bodies to the zoneline.
Three boat rides from Freeport. That was a pretty horrible EQ day. You made it so much better, Ravager. Thanks again.

Spend a couple days looking for a Fishbone Earring, no luck.

a complete set of visible Ravenscale armor
This is so classic, and what the original Nubben wore for such a long time, although I think one or two pieces were actually Blackened Iron from RunnyEye and not Ravenscale. I also rocked the Crested Helm and Serpent Bracers for the silver and black look. That was by far my favorite looking gear set up on any character I've ever played in EQ.
On Live: first time taking my druid to Freeport. I got on the boat in Butcherblock, and once in Ocean of Tears I warped through the boat. I decide to swim the rest of the way to Freeport because how far could it be? I didn't know how to swim or about autorun either, so I was pressing the forward key over and over and over again. I couldn't stop because I would drown, and lose all of my patchwork armor. 2 hours later I hit a zone wall. i was eventually saved a half hour later by my friend in a canoe.
Good times!

Got 49 on my enchanter and decided to go check out soloing in The Hole. Did research on the wiki and discovered I need to get into Paineel to buy the key to get into The Hole.
I didn't have enough faction to get the key from the guards to get into Paineel, even after trying to illusion +faction boost spells, also looked into any quests I could do to get faction up with the guards. Eventually paid some lowbie 100pp and Clarity to open the city for me and wait around for when I needed back out.
Flash forward two levels later I am passing the guards to go down into The Hole and is dawns on me. Just charm the fucking guard to get the key to Paineel you asshole.

On Live back in the day I had never done a single quest other than EXP item turn ins. The very first quest years and years later that I attempted to do was the key to BoT. I didn't sleep much back in those days and I was in line to be the first on Torvo to enter BoT. Anyway we dropped Orien Wavecrusher...(memeory>?) in PoS for my last piece. I was so busy getting tells from friends and guilds, having my roommates crowd me excited to see BoT, and not researching like I should have done. I turned the quest items in in the wrong order. Had to start completly over again. Oh the shame of letting that many people down lol.

On live I rolled an DE SK and when I got to lvl 60 during the PoP days I learned that I messed up my starting points and was buying terrible gear... clerics hated when i tanked... also my name sounded girly, Radenia... got harrassed about it alot. getting unlocked for plane of earth and quitting EQ after when all I wanted to do was kill quarm... I won a roll on a SK only shield that drops from the dragon in lavastorm agaisnt someone who really wanted it. He was chatting with me saying gj bla bla and when I told him "ya this is great now I can lvl up my bash, never used a shield before" (I only used 2handers at the time, he always had a shield). He became very upset with me after that and ignored me in the guild for the rest of my EQ days. I was a total noob playing my first and only toon on live i dont even know how a guild invited me to help them kill the gods in PoP lol.
This isnt a stupid story but facing the plauge bringer god in PoD i got too much agro and was getting beat on but for some reason the game blessed me and i was invincible, my health was dropping dramatically fast but also rising to 100% just as fast. Normally because my stats and sk sucked so much that i should of died in 2 or 3 hits and no way the healers were healing me as quickly as he turned on me. This lasted more than a minute and my jaw was on the floor while i was staring at my health bar. When he finally went down i tried explaining it to the raid and guild chat... no one cared =/ it was one of the most heart pounding moments for me in PoP until fighting PoT gods ;)

During Kunark era, I was racing to be the first enchanter to hit 60 on my server. I was bound outside sebilis, as was common. After a long session, at level 56, I gated out, and went out to run to the store.
While I was gone, someone had trained the orb room in trak teeth where I was bound. I came back to the computer realizing I had death looped and was now level 54.
I still was second chanter to level 60 on Quellious. But that was the last time I ever went afk at a potentially dangerous bind spot.

Lol I remember all those powerleveling and money guides, I never bought one but I always wondered if they were really any good. Reading that one, I'm glad I didn't.
I can't think of any specific real specific things about my days back in 2000 but I do remember that when I first started by buddy's older brother had a high level enchanter in a big guild on Bristlebane. He gave me a ton of gear for my Paladin I made. As soon as I reached level 10 I sold off all the gear he gave me because I wanted to try out a different class.
This was my first MMO ever mind you and I was about 13-14 so I was dumb and I was really excited about trying a lot of different classes. Long story short, I switched to different characters about 6 times, losing more money each time I sold gear off because, let's be honest, a brand new player has no idea how much items are really worth. Eventually I ended up back on my paladin with worse gear than what he gave me. He then refused to help me any more until I could at least get someone past level 20. I made my warrior Colassal (ogre), sold my paladin gear yet again, bought him some bronze and cheap weapons (think I had maybe a dragoon dirk and some 1h slasher) and got him to level 20. My buddy's brother decided to give me a Wurmslayer and a Lammy and I never looked back.
Fast forward, I think around the Luclin timeframe, I was level 51. Sac'd myself for a necro for 10k all the way down to level 46. Went out and purchased almost a full set of Fierce Heraldic armor, leveled up to 55 and that was it for my live days. I still log on every now and then to see my 55 warrior still there, only now the fierce heraldic is in the bank because the newbie armor overpowers everything you could ever loot back then, it's so sad.
TL;DR A lot of people probably made a lot of money off me in my young days.

Rolled a barbarian rogue, got it to level 3. Sow and invis thru W/N/E Karana, get round the maze to runnyeye.
Didn't bother hide/sneak thinking I could zerg through. Died. On corpse run died again (this time in maze).
Ended up making a Halfling rogue to hide/sneak the geared corpse to the MT zoneline then getting my barby a port from NK to MT and bind in rivervale.

Old CT. Playing my first high-level character a 50 something Ogre SK. Just puttering around the zone, looking at old school (pre-revamp CT). Decide to train out and head to Oggok to get some Ogre Swill, aggro every Lizardman in the world.
It's cool though, zone is right there.
Just gotta duck through this door and I'm home free. Lizards zerg me, Lizards everywhere, Lizards on my back hitting me for 11 and kicking me for 4. Lizards stuck in door with me.
Can't get out of doorway, too many lizards. Struggle with the D key. Can't FD cause stuck in duck mode. Takes me 20 minutes to die. Tired of ducking through doorways, never played an Ogre again.

So, my dumbest thing I ever did would have been on live (keep in mind, at this time I was like 13).
I had started a Wood Elf Ranger named Denniker. GFay was a popular zone on Mithaniel Marr. One thing I would see often in the zone chat was "Looking for SoW, will tip!" Or "Casting SoW at PoD Lift, tips appreciated!"
So, being the dumb child I was, I thought people were asking for "Sows" because their armor took damage. So, I went and bought a Sewing Kit. I then went to what I knew was called "Newbie Lift" and shouted out in zone, "Sowing at Newbie Lift! Donations appreciated!"
Naturally people flooded to me quickly, my first customer had already come up and hailed me! I had informed him that I was new and had never "Sowed" before and he was my first customer and asked if I was supposed to give him the "Sowing" Kit or was he supposed to give me his armor?...
He began to laugh at me. He then explained to people around me what I was doing... They began to laugh at me. It was that day that I learned SoW was an acronym for Spirit of the Wolf AND how to spell Sew.

Something everyone has done.
Playing in 1999, on some crappy dial up or roadrunner Internet. You come upon an Orc or Gnoll Shaman. Get blinded. See a completely black screen, can't tab out because classic. Figure your computer died or you lost power. Too many Surge or Mountain Dew cans liter the floor for you to easily stand up to turn on a light in your man(boy)-cave to test if the power is indeed out.
So you naturally do the easy thing and restart your computer. Restarts no problem and of course you come back to your character naked at their bind point. The next time it happens you put two and two together. Holy crap... Maybe these shaman mobs can turn my screen off?!?!

When i first started the game i had a human warrior that i was exploring with in EC. I was SoWed and running around in awe more than anything. At the time i wasnt aware about consing mobs and factions etc etc. Well i ran by the undead ruins with SoW and went into the tunnel to hang out and just take in the scene. Ended up dying from the mobs confused as hell and i guess i started off a chain death event on a bunch of mules. I got a bunch of tells and i had no clue what i did or how it happened but people were going crazy so i deleted my character and started again lol

I had another dumb instance on my Ranger too. I knew this dude named Iinen, he was a Druid and had been helping me out a lot. So, he told me how to talk in tells with him since I kept talking to him in say and he had to go run and do some stuff in another part of the zone.

So, my frustrated newb self /shouted, "Iinen!! I can't send you a /tell for some reason! Help!" I did this a few times before he sent me a /tell like "WTF dude?"
It was then that I learned a capital i and lowercase L look incredibly alike.
You know... thinking about it... how did I make it to adulthood?

Losing 600 dollars plus the account for a necro I sold on Rallos because I forgot to give the buyer the answer to the secret question before going out of town for a few weeks. At which point he used the exploit on Sony's website to reset the question, change the PW, and claim I stole back the account.
Fun times.

Too many stupid things to mention them all but here's two:
1. On my first toon, a ranger, during Kunark I was bound in FV and was screwing around and decided to solo near the WC zone-in in Kith at night. i figured if anything went wrong I'll just zone. I found out how long a CR it was from FV. Two boat rides but at least I had SoW.
2. On my second and main toon, a wizard, I was raiding in PoP and on the Mith Marr pull in Plane of Valor I accidentally evaced my group which included the main cleric who was supposed to start the chain. We got slaughtered at the "safe spot" but my guild somehow didn't wipe so we got CoH'ed back after the kill.

Happily running through Kith at night. On the way through I meet some Decaying footmen. Not a problem, they are XP green. I can just kill them and keep running.
Then a Decaying footman blocks my path. Again, no problem I have enough hp left to deal with it.
During the fight a Risen Corporal joins in. That's okay, I can drag them to zoneline, kill the first mob for the loot/xp then zone out.
Good plan until I get jumped by a Decaying commander too. Being a blue con necromancer he dispels my sow, poisons me then snares me.
Happened right now on my 48 warrior. Looking for rez.

You could always run waaaaay up along the zone line like non-crazy people. ;) but even then you get whacked sometimes.
I bound myself in front of CT forgetting that a Bouncer patrolled right there. Death loop ensued when my baby's mom came over.
An awesome cleric rezzed me over and over for free despite epics not existing yet. Still lost 1.5 levels, after all the rezzes.

Way back when on my second crated char. (the first was a dwarf that fell off a mountain and I could never find his body so re-rolled) I worked a wood elf war. up to lvl 4 and headed to orc hill. I was just standing there killing whatever came near me and to my very inexperienced mind wave after wave of orcs were charging up the hill (the group was pulling and was very happy with my free help) and we were fighting for our lives. all very exciting stuff but I noticed I did much better when someone cast Skin like Wood on me. I saw someone ask for a SOW so I put two and two together and figured that was skin of wood.... Im getting low health by now so I start shouting 'someone give me a sow if you want to survive the night! these orcs aren't going to stop and we have to work together'. Sad thing is I wasn't embarrassed about it till much later.

I was 12 in early 2000 when I first started. I have a few embarrassing memories.
One of my first characters was a halfling. Someone cast invis on me so I thought I could attack whatever I wanted and it couldn't and therefore couldn't hit me. I ran into Kithicor at night and attacked a red skeleton general of some sort. After to coming to in Misty, I thought the invis must have just ran out at the wrong time, so I asked for another and tried again. I asked everyone in Misty why my invis kept running out when I attacked things and felt like an idiot afterwards.
I few characters later (I made dozens, if not hundreds of alts) I managed to get a druid to level 19 in East Karana. I was so excited about getting ports, but it was 3 or 4 in the morning and I was passing out. I was bound near one of merchant houses for quick selling. Bad idea. I fell asleep in my chair, and when I woke up I was level 14ish. That character was promptly deleted.
And finally the all too common: I gave a friend my password. I was 14 now and finally stuck with a character. My level 50+ ranger (yeah I know awful choice) was semi-decked out from selling so many fish bone earrings. One day I logged on and all my gear and Plat was gone. I assumed it was my "friend" but he wouldn't admit it. This next part sounds bad, but his parents were awful and I told him he could no longer come over my house unless he admitted to it and gave me my stuff back. He did, but then I never talked to him again. I still feel bad about that.

Since level 2 my worst mistake has been buying a spit and mixing bowl since I was planning on baking and then learning that food durations are bugged with no plan to fix until velious. Spits and mixing bowls take up a whole slot in the bank so I was out a couple bank slots for a few weeks.

When I finally got my Tear of Quellious from PoSky, I got down to the turn in area and spawned Wu. I had just gotten a rez for a key corpse, when during my typing out the conversation with Wu, I started to auto attack him. This occurred because I did not hit "enter" before I began to type in say. I was 14 when I made my first character on Kunark live, a dark elf mage.
After half an hour of wandering around Neriak looking for the exit, I drowned in a fountain somewhere because I couldn’t figure out how to change the camera angle to swim out (mouse-look was either disabled by default or not available at this point).
I ended up in Nektulos, and managed to get a rusty dagger by punching a decaying skeleton to death. I then proceeded melee my way to level 5 over several hours, wondering when I would finally get any spells.
Much of this was accomplished by joining some small groups at the newbie log, as I’m pretty sure everyone just assumed I was a rogue or something since I had no robe or spells and I was still wielding this rusty dagger.
Eventually I discovered that you could use merchants by right clicking (the game didn’t really make this clear at the time). Needless to say, things got a lot easier once I bought my first pet spell.
All that rusty dagger business must have really left an impression on me though, because after playing the mage to 56 I ended up re-rolling as a gnome rogue (I was mostly interested in the hilarious ramifications of the gnome plate helm graphic making you look like a ninja).

When I first started playing EQ, in 1999, I was a kid and didn't know what I was doing. Back then you could allow someone else to not only drag your corpse, but also to loot it. Another newbie died (from guards in town, I think they were KoS) and asked me to loot their corpse and bring the contents to them. I looted the corpse, with every intention to bring it to them. They were a few zones away, sending me tells. I was replying to them in /ooc, not knowing how to use tells at that point (and thinking for some reason that ooc had a few zones distance). After about 10 or 15 minutes I think they thought I was trying to steal everything, and logged off. It wasn't anything special, a few pieces of cloth armor and a small bag, but I still felt really bad about it.
On that same character, a Human Warrior, at level 5, I died in East Commonlands to a snake of some sort that poisoned me and soundly defeated me. I came back but couldn't find my corpse. Gave up looking after twenty or thirty minutes, and rolled a Half-Elf Bard.

It is pretty interesting to see the replies here. A lot of people seem to have suffered from the 'couldn't find my corpse, so i rerolled' syndrome.
My first character was a halfling druid named Naennil that took me probably 2 weeks to level up to level 4. I had a very terrible graphics card and dial up internet, and I basically had to fight right next to guards because if something ran I was hopeless to catch it.
I was killing a snake of some sort in Misty Thicket and it turned it's tail and fled. I tried to follow it but it quickly outpaced me due to my terrible setup. Next thing I know I'm dead and zoning back into Misty Thicket.
Cue me trying to find my corpse for hours. Couldn't find it - devastating because I had had some gold, spells, and some bags. I rerolled into another halfling druid - Amaruq, who became my main for some time. I figured it would be better to start off naked at level 1 rather than be naked at level 4. child logic is hard.

Looks like we were all just a bunch of dumb kids.
Glad we all matured in to such fine neckbeards.
I almost deleted my blue chars to play on Red.
That almost sucked.
Iactually started playing on red really frequently, about 7-8 months ago. It was really cool at first. Fast XP, people giving out free loot all over the place.. Really seemed alright. Got to 51 on my druid in no time and realized what a mistake I made, began seeing what a bunch of shitbags the FFA pvp element attracts and have since deleted the lv51 druid and gone back to blue. It became readily apparent that the 2-400 plat worth of coin/items people like to give out to newbies really isn't worth it when you consider the endless hours of grief you are setting yourself up for.
Thoise individuals aren't giving you gear becuase they're nice, they're trying to convince you to stay so they can log into their in range characters and kill you once you start getting into UNrest/Mistmoore range and so on, so forth.
I literally spent 90% of my time Watching timers of/reapplying and medding for Buffs so I'd have some sort of an advantage against all the assholes in full best-in-slot while naked on the third/fourth consecutive corpse run (CR 3-4 taking place before I ever finished CR1. This is a special breed of neckbeard, they care only for Yellow Text, they dont care if you're naked, oom or at 10% HP when approached). Even something as painstakingly mindnumbing as the ORDER in which your buffs are applied is crucial because if SoW is first on your list it's the first to be dispelled, whereas if that shitty buff you get and dont really use is first.. well, you get it.
PNP is a joke, LNS does nothing but shaft you; the population is so low that if you get pk'd in the zone you intend to group in and you then have to call LNS to avoid harassment, you've effectively killed what is likely your only chance for solid group xp. ANd the four level level range cap while intended to help really only hinders.
Can't tell you how many times I've been ina group of genuine new people, when some asshole in a FUNGI comes up and starts pwning on the only person who is in range. This could be remedied if they added flagging whereby say healing the target off the assailant, or just by casting a nuke on someone higher level than yourself you would be able to join the fight, but ass is it is just a shitty broken clusterfuck.
Not just any clusterfuck though, a clusterfuck of neckbeards too quick quick to laugh at the bluebies lusting over pixels, though none will ever admit they are playing the same game for the same reason, they just like the feeling of being tougher than somebody else they get by being able to take fight in virtual fistfights.

(red rant)You raise a few interesting points. I hate how there is a massive XP bonus to accelerate you into the high level pvp. I always preferred the low level stuff on live. The only exception is when someone twinked with kunark items would come and ruin it.

Back on live i played on one the race war servers and had a DE warrior (pre-kunark) - I never really traveled far but heard aviaks were amazing experience so I headed to the arena to bind but had to travel through rathe mountains. I didn't know the way so asked a guy who told me to go straight but hug the right wall prompting me to take a right at the first intersection and get lost there for 4-5 hours scared shitless as everything was KOS and red to me. Back in mid 2000, my first character, a level 8 Wizard. Going across OOT from Freeport to BB, I decided to try out my new Eye of Zomm spell at one of the islands with a wharf. Ran the eye around the island and it bumped into Quag Maelstrom somehow - and, surprisingly to me, Quag killed my eye and chased me onto the boat as it was pulling away, sending me to a watery grave.
I freaked and petitioned and a guide actually summoned my corpse for me.
What was the point of that spell when the eye could aggro stuff?

I was pretty dumb.
I think you just won the "most adorably innocent noob mistake" award

Live, a month after release. Before I elaborate on a particular incident, let me just say that first month was one debacle after another. A quick summary:
Night of release, first character was an Erudite Paladin (first mistake). Couldn't see at night in Toxx and lost my corpse after getting jacked by poachers. Rage quit for a few days. Re-rolled a half elf paladin. Got him to 8th level. Joined a bard and ranger who were IRL friends for my first foray into the Karanas. It was their first trip as well. We're rolling around behind the bard, who has speed, killing everything we can. Good times for about an hour. Then we roll up a hill to find ourselves staring at the asses of Choon and Froon. We could never recover our corpses. We rage quit for a few days. I rerolled another half elf paladin. Spent another week in BB and cautiously killing bandits and random shit in the Karanas. I'm level 12 and quite full of myself at this point.
Okay, here we go.
So I'm down in BB, I see a half elf in full bronze plate armor. I mean I thought I was a pimp in my banded. I shit myself. I mean, there was nothing else on the planet that I wanted more than to be in that bronze armor. After some tells to the guy, I find out you can buy it and the best place for cash was the gnolls roaming outside of Splitpaw (this was obviously before they were buffed up), because hardly anyone knew it existed at that point. No camping, no competition. Just constant killing and looting. Take an a bunch of bags and sell all the stuff they drop. He also told me about the shortcut out in the river, which if you hit just right, warps you straight across into SK, shaving off a lot of travel time. I'll have full bronze plate in no time!
I tell my IRL friends, and they're all over it. To fast forward, it took us a couple of days and some deaths to figure out the zone warp and find the place, but we get there. Much joy to be had. We start the farming marathon and business is goood. Of course, we're having to WALK back to Qeynos because we're so encumbered. BUT, we're making loads of cash. We did this over a weekend, 16 hours a day for almost three days straight. At some point, the walk back was really getting to us.
So I had a brilliant idea.
Fill up all our bags with phat loot, leave half of them behind, run back and sell the other half, come back, get them, fill them up again, lather, rinse, repeat. Genius! Then I'm like, "Dudes, we shouldn't leave this shit sitting on the ground, a gnoll will pick it up and give it all to the others, or some other player will happen by and steal it all. Let's hide it in a tree!"
We spent two hours finding a tree limb we could jump up to. Dropped half our bags and off we went. I was a hero to my friends. We run back, and ...well, the bags are gone. We searched trees for hours. All of it gone. We were all convinced that someone stole it. We petitioned, but there was no answer for hours. We started to kill gnolls again, but we were all so pissed. We couldn't get over it. We all ended up raging quitting again for a couple of days. Never went back out there.
Post mortem, ultimately I got my bronze armor about a week later. I immediately ran to BB and stood on the bridge, basically a "Hey, look at me" douche move. But then I'm looking around ....what the hell? Unfortunately, by then there were a dozen guys running around with bronze plate. I was actually physically depressed and rage quit for a few days ...again.
Of course I had some other good ones, like not standing on spawn points because I thought they would not spawn and camping Najena for 24 hours for JBoots, only to be so excited to get some, sending all my friends tells while standing over the corpse, someone else came in and looted them out from under me and took off. That was the day I learned about locking down corpses. I rage quit for a week after that one.

When they changed Fear to not be such a cake walk after the level restriction went in, and increased the aggro radius of mobs around the portal, I was part of a failed fear run that involved me de-leveling to 45. I was so worried to lose my corpse. No one could break into the zone, it was just too hard at that point for the gear/skill level of the server at that point. Thankfully, the mother Theresa of Mithaniel Marr server Brother Xave summoned me into fear on a giant disc like thing in the sky with my corpse on it, let me loot, and ported me out. Brother Xave was the man. He also helped when the corpse poofed on the very first server naggy kill (or one of the very first). The corpse just vanished, so Xave spawned naggy, soloed it/32k'd it, and let us loot.

on my very first Character way back when. I sold my tunic to buy food. I was a ranger.
On the original Khat on E'ci I leveled up killing the Miller twins outside Surefall, not knowing it would make me KOS to most of Qeynos.
Later I looked up factions to do my epic and saw a faction in Karana that could be fixed with Bandit sash quests.
I gathered up a few bags full and went on my happy hippy way to turn them in,not realizing I was KOS to the guildmaster. Fun times.
I went back later after discovering wolf form changed faction levels.
With my sound up at a pretty good level and wolf form I ran in and promptly got smacked down the resulting wolf shrieks and screams scared my cat who was sleeping on the speaker making him fall off the desk onto my dog who hit the power strip powering off my PC.
I logged back on to find Khat naked at her bind spot which I'm pretty sure was Great Divide.(Who needs bind when you can port) Sigh.

So when I was a noob back on live, I came in at SoL (shadows of luclin) and was playing with a mate, he was PLing me and I sorta lost the experience of level 1-1-15.
So 6 months ago when I jumped on p99, iI was pretty excited to go through the noob levels again.
So anyway I got to 26 and I was grouped in Warsilk Woods, killing giants, and I was doing my standard oom message, and the shaman said "mate do you ever meditate? Sit down so you can regen"
My response was "I am sitting, and I have been for the last 20 min! Mana regen takes time!"
So anyway he said it shouldn't take this long, was I out of food or drink? Nope!
So I petitioned to see if maybe it was a bug, I explained that I had food and I was always sitting but I can't regen mana faster than normal
GM writes back this:
"Whilst we will always do our best to help, we don't like to interrupt the game play and pure classic experience, but here is a hint, go visit your guild master and see if he can solve your problem"
So I did, and realized I didn't train meditate! Or anything rather.

A few things stick out to me when I first started playing. It was my brother that got me into it. I believe I made a high elf cleric first.
I looked at him and said "What the hell is the point of intelligence? I'M the one playing the character! Why does HE need to be smarter, I'm controlling everything he does."
I was also confused by the concept of saving/camping (keep in mind, I came from console RPGs). Possessing an obsessive need to save my progress I asked, "how do you save?" He goes, "you really don't save, you camp out." I said "ok, so until I camp out, if I die, I'll return to level 1? I just have to keep camping out every 15 minutes to make sure I don't lose progress?" I just didn't understand the concept of a game without a save feature.
I also seemed to remember thinking clerics were super strong, because strike nuked for like 7 damage but shock of frost only hit for 4 or 5. (by the way, how stupid is that?)
I also had the standard corpse story. A high level player had given me bronze armor, I became emboldened and somehow wandered off to orc hill. Lost my corpse and was so dejected.
I remember giving a banker 10 plat when I meant to just bank it. That was an incredible sum of money for me and I was sick to my stomach for hours.
I remember telling my brother to always interact with wolves because "they seemed to be really nice and I always see them handing out items).
He had given me coupons for Christmas. One of them was "an extra hour of EQ" (we shared a computer back then and had to take turns). I remember redeeming that bad boy when I hit level 12 on my mage and got burnout. Man, was I a bad ass.
Good times.

Necroing because this thread deserve front page exposure.
My contribution:
I remember refusing to use taunt on my level 3 Paladin back in 1999 because it had been explained to me that it made the mobs want to attack you. I remember thinking at that time, "where's the benefit in that????"
I remember deciding mesmerize was a pretty useless spell after experimenting with it solo in gfay and reinforcing that understanding while grouping on Orc hill. I don't remember how many more levels it took before the epiphany struck or how many more levels of subsequent explanation and training of group members before I was merrily mezzing away.

Bear in mind I'm 23 now, but when my 8-10 year old self was playing this game back around 2000 I was a lot more naive.
It started with Saturday morning getting up early to get some play time in on the one computer in the house before my dad booted me off.
Ran into a very nice Bard in EC on my low level Human Warrior (there's my first mistake). He proceeded to have me follow him back to the forge in EFP and make me a full set of banded, which I was ecstatic about.
Well he also tossed some brandy in the trade window as well (for kicks, I guess), and sent me on my way. I couldn't believe what had just happened and was super excited to destroy anything in my way back in EC.
Unfortunately, I also had never experienced imbibing alcohol in the game (I thought I'd get in trouble if I made my character drink because I couldn't drink in RL). But I thought I would try it out before my parents got up, 'cause no one would ever know.
Needless to say, I started flipping out the second I right-clicked 4 or so of them because the screen warped. I thought I had broken the screen, or had done something irreversible to the UI and was eternally screwed. After debating with myself for a few minutes on how I needed to approach this dire situation, I tried talking to the guy who hooked me up with the banded armor, unaware, of course, that I was thoroughly inebriated and unintelligible to him.
So I broke down and woke my dad up to confess my sins, and both my parents got a good laugh out of it. Of course, when I went downstairs to show him the effects were pretty much gone. I'll never forget that morning.

Started EQ with a RL friend in '99. We both started human paladins because it seemed the like ultimate class by being able to heal and use a sword. In the game booklet when it explains the starting stats it says that intelligence helps you increase your skills faster. We thought this meant we would level up faster, so we put our points towards intelligence for quick leveling up and into charisma so we could buy items for less money.
I stuck with that guy into the 40's and made more blunders. I got two valuable loot pieces and squandered them both. I got a glowing black stone, which was worth a lot of plat. I traded it for a wurmslayer right before the value of the wurmslayer tanked to 10% of what the GBS was worth. The other nice loot I got was a thick banded belt. I came across a guy with a similar name as my guild leader and started telling him about my new TBB. He pretended to be my guild leader and said, let me see how high my ATK is wearing the TBB, then he instantly went LD when I handed it over. I was so devastated I wrote a letter to SOE trying to explain what this guy did.
Before I even got my wurmslayer I was running past some guys and the weapon appeared on the ground and my cursor was right on it so I clicked it up. It's a giant item and the guy must have not had room in his inventory when they traded it. I gave it back, because I'm not a dick.
My next character, a rogue, was on a late night Trakanon raid and after the first attempt wiped without much damage done to Trak some people were dropping out so I figured there was no way we'd ever kill this thing. After the CR I was tired, said something in raid chat like, "I'm lagging guys what the hell.." and made it appear that I had gone linkdead by unplugging my internet. The next day I discovered they killed Trak, the rogue BP dropped, and there were no rogues present to loot it, and it would have been mine. But it wasn't.
Thanks for reading, and I'm glad some other people made some serious blunders that make mine not look too bad.

I remember on my mage when I first got my invis spell (level 8ish) I was on sister island in oot and my pet was getting destroyed so I thought eh ill just invis myself and be safe. Well pet died with invis spell and then the sister ran over and found me for some reason even though i was invis... learned that the hard way.

In about 2000 my friend got me into EQ and gave me a bunch of gear. I then played almost nonstop for about 3 weeks to get up into the high 30s I think. Anyway, I has down trying to solo in hhk cause I couldn't find a grp. I had a mob down to about 30% or so and suddenly he heals up to about 80% and shortly after I die. I then preceed to /yell "Who healed my mob and got me killed?"...
