Hey everyone. New to project 1999. Played EQ on Tallon Zek (later Zek from 2000-2006).

So, I've followed the guide on this website. I've installed the game, have deleted the five files specified and have downloaded the additional P99Files33 and have moved them over into my Everquest folder.

I can start up the game and choose the project 1999 (kunark) server. When I do, I get to a character selection screen where I'm told that:

"Your spells file is outdated. Please visit the project1999.org and get the lates files from the getting started post (ERRORCODE SP-1)".

I've tried restarting, I've tried removing the game and re-installing it (several times). I've tried copying and inserting the files from P99Files33 one file at a time and all at once.

I can't figure out what's going wrong. It's not helped by me not being horribly proficient with a computer. I've googled this till my fingers bled but have been unable to find any solution (tried using the Duxa installer, but to no avail).

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get this to work? :)

If you have downloaded P99Files33 and put the files in the right place, then your spells file is updated. Check the properties of the spells_us.txt file; it should have a 6/24/2014 modified date.

Just because you get the error doesn't mean it's truly out of date. Ignore the error and just keep trying.

Thanks for the reply! :)

How do I "keep trying"? Whenever I log in, the character selection screen offers me no viable options.

I see a human character on the podium and then the first four "character slots" are called:

"Your spells file is outdated"

"Please visit...."

etc. etc.

If I choose anything but quit, I get disconnected.

make sure you dont have EQ installed to your Program files folder. If you do it will screw with you trying to extract the new files. Move the EQ folder outside program files and try it again.

Sadly I am not getting this to work. I have tried installing EQ both in my C drive (and not under program files) and then in my D drive. I still am stuck at the character selection screen with the msg that my "spells file is outdated". And if choose anything other than quit, I get disconnected. :(

So, I got this to work!

Turns out, my antivirus program (Norton) was blocking the dsetup.dll file. It enterpreted this file as being a trojan horse. As soon as I instructed my antivirus program to ignore this, it worked!!! :) Nostalgia of my youth, here I come!
