Guthrie Govan is a guitar god who came to prominence thanks to the internet and youtube. He is probably the most complete living guitarist and is the most shining guitarist carrying on in the tradition of Shawn Lane (the greatest guitarist ever). Guthrie's tonality is a little more mainstream which is why I think you people with 2-digit IQs will enjoy him despite the fact that he really is a jazz guitarist - he won't beat you over the head too hard with the jazz.

If you like rock electric guitar and virtuoso musicianship, check out the link above!

Having been a musician most of my life I stopped playing to get away from making that kind of music. While self fulfilling and exciting to play, it's not really enjoyable for most people to listen to. Like extremely pretentious jazz or any other genre, prog metal whatever... The kind of music you need a fucking degree to listen to or to even understand whats going on and why it's cool.

That kind of music doesn't really make anyone but musicians happy. It's why my favorite artists/writers are becker and fagen from steely dan. They figured out a way to make fun interesting music that could be enjoyed my most. Just my preference though. Music is the ultimate subjective topic. Becker is a pretty tasty soloist if you ask me!

ya he mad, been that way a while

As a listener I don't really look at music analytically despite being very analytical and musical - I just now how it makes me feel. Some shit gets you off, some doesn't. There was a time when David Gilmour was as good as it got for me, but over time your tastes change. I just love the electric guitar - I think it is the most expressive instrument with such an incredible range (of sounds). This translated into me moving from classic stoner rock on to instrumental rock and eventually rock/fusion. This is a more a function of the players than the music itself - each of those genres are redeeming in their own right - but I find that the superior players gravitate toward the fusion. For me with Guthrie and Shawn Lane and whoever, it's less about what notes they play and more about the way in which they play them. This is what has allowed me to stay interested in guitar rock despite a lot of very repeated listening. Maybe eventually I will get my fill of all the good fusion out there and move on to Indian music or something retarded like Shawn Lane did. I still like Pink Floyd and Joe Satriani or whatever, but that sort of thing doesn't really get me off any more. It's like I just need more and more gratuitous of guitar playing. Occasionally with virtuoso playing comes virtuoso musicianship, and I think this is the real selling point of Guthrie Govan and Shawn Lane.

It doesn't have to be fusion either, I guess I just I want to hear great electric guitar players. Jason Becker (neoclassical shred metal, mostly) is another personal favorite of mine, yet again it's not about his speed - it's his heart. If something like Altitudes doesn't speak to you at least a little bit, you are probably tone deaf and/or retarded.

Yet Becker is too terse and fruity for most people these days. Well, most people are borderline mentally retarded.

quido

For the triple post I gotta say with Jason Becker it's really the tremolo arm that drives me wild. That guy could make his guitar cry. Such a sad story - Jason Becker was probably the most naturally talented guitarist of all time, cut down before his prime.

I agree with this sentiment pretty much. I grew up playing classical on the piano, then in my early teens slowly got into shitty rock (like Shinedown), then promptly matured out of that phase into progressive music (Satriani and Dream Theater were favorites), then got into white blues like Stevie Ray Vaughan, then slowly into popular music somehow. Groups like Steely Dan really take the technical side and distill down into listenable form. I think they have the best of both worlds. My friends who are jazz musicians love them, and non-musicians sometimes enjoy them.

I feel like if you have been a musician since you were young, you should grow out of the phase "technique for the sake of showing off" by the time you're out of your teens; otherwise, not many people will care about your music except your friends and lonely Necronomicon worshipers. I see it happening every day in the local music scene.

quido
12-10-2014, 12:26 AM
Guthrie refers to Steely Dan chords as "budget jazz chords" - often normal triads with an odd note in the bass.

quido
12-10-2014, 12:33 AM
I am also a supporter of the "technical for the sake of technical sucks" sentiment. I remember in my more formative guitar-playing/listening years seeing Shawn Lane's name on some list of shredders. I checked out some videos on Youtube and thought "Jesus, this guy is fast, but it's just stunt guitar." It wasn't until I checked out a couple of his albums (with Jonas Hellborg and friends) that I came to realize what a superbly musical player he is - he doesn't shred just to shred generally - it adds something to the music. And in fact, my favorite Shawn Lane solo is performed nice and slow on the clean channel (part of it is featured in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gc4KWowRBGU). Shawn Lane being the greatest guitar player of all time has very little to do with his speed and is mostly to do with his phrasing and musicianship and writing.

How many non-guitar players have ever heard of Michael Angelo Batio? Dunked

JackFlash

You want to see virtuoso? Check out Richard Galliano (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKFIQoUyhns) on the concertina.... Waltz for nicky is one of my favs. (Accordion Derail)

Idk about the steely dan budget jazz chords....wtf does that even mean. So many ways to play a chord.....you can really call shit whatever you want. It really depends on what else you have in the piece.

I like to think most people can appreciate musicians with virtuoso talent regardless of instrument, style, or education.

Haha yes I did! The video was introduced to me, as well as Malmsteen, to a guy that I delivered some marine supplies to who thought I looked like a rocker. A lot of his other solo spots do indeed sound a lot like videogame progression, and I wish it were true that he did it on purpose.

Carey's alright I guess. For a mainstream dude.

As for guitarists I've always hated the argument "Oh he's a complete guitarist man! He plays jazz and shit!" I sincerely doubt that a lot of the more competent guitarists don't play music styles because they can't but more likely because they just don't like that style of music. My personal favorite is Jeff Loomis. Love both his solo work and work in Nevermore. He currently plays guitar in Arch Enemy.

quido

Yeah as Guthrie said, to play Jazz and chromaticism or whatever you really should like how it sounds first. Some people try to learn modal playing and whatever just because they think they're supposed to, like it's some sort of natural progression. Arnold Schoenberg had a similar view on classical music in the early 1900s and put together an abomination called the 12-tone system.

I don't like a lot of jazz playing - it is way too terse and nonsensical. However Guthrie does what is mostly rock music with some jazz here and there. And it's never jazz for the sake of jazz.

To say Jazz is too nonsensical is to not know the style and chemistry of Jazz at all. When most of these individuals either go to school or train at home under Jazz, its usually for the transitioning on the fret board and how soulful a simple misplaced step can come off in-between transition.

You'd be surprised how many big timers first undertook the learning of jazz, only to play metal or country music on the stage. Its really a big first step, but jazz guitar is by far one of the hardest and most knowledgeable ways to play these days, or at least start off learning.

Not everyone has dreams of playing on a box amp on the side of Bourbon street as a nobody, and Jazz guitar has helped a lot of musicians get to the point where that isn't even their forte anymore. I always wanted to go to school for Jazz guitar, but I never wanted to play Jazz. Still do, and still don't.

I'm aware that it's not total nonsense, just some people are happy to have it sound as such sometimes - a bit too atonal and avant garde at times. Chromaticism for the sake of chromaticism sounds awful. Just like most things, 90% of examples from a given whatever are complete shit that you have to sift through.

You're damn right, and that's what makes the rest of us stand above. I hate the nonsensical shit that I keep hearing in person, but every once in a while, I can't help but admire the way some take that Jazz transition, and make it into something so seamless and perfect, in a totally different genre of tempo and playstyle than what was expected.

Like Guthrie, but he's no Derek Trucks.

I love Derek Trucks too but it's not really a meaningful comparison. What I will say is I like how Guthrie beats you over the head with guitar playing. I watched an interview with Derek once and I don't remember the question, but he went on to explain that a good show takes the listener for a ride - ups and downs, not just 2 hours of beating people over the head. And maybe that's what most people want, but not me; I want gratuitous in your face relentless guitar playing. Guthrie gives me that and I love him for it.

I've been digging this track the last few days https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXOh4oCLaFw - at least check out the solo at 2:45. Obviously Guthrie is a master of what he does, but there's something about his sound that just drives me wild. His tone on this track is so huge - I've never heard anything like it. I enjoy the Zappa element of the track and applaud Guthrie for making a Whammy pedal sound as good and as interesting as he did (the only other whammy pedal track I can think of that I enjoy is Pink Floyd's Marooned - fuck Tom Morello, he's a hack).

Guthrie rocks.
