View Full Version : Utter newbie (!) - how to make money?

Howdy, new here and I played EQ for just a few months in 2002/2003.... just checking things out again. Love the retro look!
Question: my newbie druid is seriously poor! Even Level 1 Druid spells in Rivervale are going for 1 gold at the merchants; I remember them being 1 or 2 silvers on Live. Why the price hike?
So, given I have no guild and no money, what's the best way to make money to buy some spells and gear on this server?
(Or... is there a better place to buy stuff that's a lot cheaper?)
thx!

Kill humanoid mobs. Goblins in your case. They drop cash, rusty weapons, cloth armor, bags, and occasionally the coveted cracked staff that sells for 1p. Animals tend to drop fuck all at those levels. Once you're a bit higher level, you can farm high quality pelts and sell them in EC for like 10p or something.

If you can make it up to the goblins it gets much easier. Early on I would kill shadow wolves for both ruined pets for tailoring and shadow pelts. Shadow pelts sell for over 1 gold and with tailoring you can make ~5 silver per item you make after pattern costs.
Save spiderling and spider silks too, to sell to players for a few plat a stack. Rivervale is kind of a rough place to start off in with regards to very early money.

Just the other day I saw a naked de chick (aka guy) asking me for free items. I said I don't play that game and she walked up to a guy who I wont name. I told him "don't do it man!" "I didn't" "Good..wait wtf?" (She equips a 2 handed axe then switches to a dagger).

1. go to freeport
2. hunt skeletons and orc pawns (save bonechips, equip cloth armor, sell rusty weapons/cracked staffs)
3. buy bags/spells
4. go to ec, sell your bonechips and if you are in luck there is always some friendly player willing to help new characters

Since you are in RV, you may see some higher levels killing the deputies. If they are and they are not looting the shield from the deputy, get them and vendor those for almost 2p ea.

I managed to twink a character with a level 12 alt - I farmed the garbage out of skeletons in Nro near the inn. That's the single biggest collection of decaying skels i've ever seen...and they respawn fast. I'd run around the inn and gather 15-20 of them and kill them all.
Then I found some guy buying chips at 10p a stack. I was a happy lowbie.

Y'all rock. Thanks for the ideas!
ps. Don't think I can do the gender trick, I got tired of being hit on last time around ;-)

Kill Bixies in MT and Kithicor during the day (assuming the undead are despawning now?) to loot Honeycombs that are selling to chanters doing the Stein of Mogguk quest for 3-5pp ea. The honeycombs are probably the biggest hassle in the Stein quest so you'll probably be able to make some nice plat!

Selling stacks of batwings/bonechips is pretty worth it. I made around 30pp last night selling all of the ones I had been holding on to (I mean I was killing the mobs anyway for exp, might as well make a buck or 2, right? :P) while I leveled. I'm only level 5 so that will take care of most of my needs for the time being. :)

People buy batwings? There are vendors with unlimited supplies of them. But bonechips can be excellent money makers because everyone and their brother is a necro or an SK. I'm kind of in the same boat as you, OP. On some spell levels I can't afford to buy all of my spells. One thing that you have to have to make EQ playable is a lot of patience. Realize that, and money won't be such a big deal.

1. Get to level 8-10 (class dependant), get a bind at the Freeport gates and hunt wisps. It worked for me, the greater light stones you can turn in for a quest at the gypsy camp in Southern Ro for 9-10p (+ or - cha). Keep killing until you have almost all 8 bags filled with greaters or normal light stones and make the run down to So Ro. You can make about 400p a run if all your bags are filled with them.
2. Make a lvl 1 evil Erudite and loot shields and swords from lvl 30-40 PC's killing guards there. I followed a mage/cleric combo (I'm sure they weren't boxing, yeah right!) around for 4 hours there and made 1800p! I call it noob leaching. I'm sure that term will catch on soon. Another night I made 500p in two hours while I was eating supper from a lvl 30 monk that was lighting up the guards there and leaving the corpses around. So my female Eru SK that I made just to loot turned into my main and she was pimped out in Darkforge armour at level 10.
3. You can go to the Qyenos Catacombs / sewer. Find the Cubert spawn. It's on a 12 second timer (shhhhh! Don't tell the devs), anyways get there around level 5 and you can kill until level 9-10. Sometimes Cubert (named spawn) drops a dress, don't worry, it's too big for Halflings, once you get the dress go up to the Qyenos bank area and turn it into Zemel (I think that’s his name, guy near the bank that mumbles about some lost girl in the sewers). You get gems and sometimes you can get a +3 int earring....you can sell that for a few 10's of pp.
That’s what I did for level's 1-10 to make some easy pp....let me know once you get up into your 20's, the options, quests and other methods broaden considerably. Old school EQ = a pp heaven!

Not to sound like a total jerk and ruin your story, but you got lucky; to help this guy out - this is a very uncommon way to make money and might be a waste of time to follow anyone killing guards, anywhere. I would say a high % of the people who kill guards anywhere sell to nearby vendors - and speaking from experience, there is high risk vs. low reward to kill guards in Paineel if you cannot sell to vendors in there. You need faction to get a key now and to sell to the vendors, and the exp alone in Paineel is not worth the trouble of getting in there just to kill the guards but then leave their loot. Not to mention the BS if someone dies in there and cannot get a key, ugh. I've hunted those guards in there and believe me those bodies are not sitting around waiting for people to loot them. Good story, but it is one of those things that all the stars have to align for this to happen.
So back to helping out the op - he is right about Greater Lightstones, but also searching the vendors in EC might work, people get bored of selling and will sell decent stuff to vendors. If someone is patient enough and the prices are good, you can buy and resell all day and make money there. Pelts, eggs, bone chips, weapons, bronze, patchwork, reinforced armor etc. are always randomly found on vendors, either decent to wear or priced right to buy then resell at the tunnel. I found a hulking spiked club on a vendor for 7pp, sold it for 25pp. Plus in the EC people are always giving gear away.
That is just another way to make money. Looting everything you kill (and the corpses of those who are not looting) and then selling everything you don’t need at the beginning is the only real way to make money – to start.
HQ Pelts and bone chips are your early bread and butter if you are 100% alone in EQ, early meaning single digit levels.
This game takes time if you are alone - if you want to race to 50 then you are on the wrong server.

It's called playing a mage, it just happens. Not a race, it just... happens.

Taking this one step further, you can also offer to sell spears and shields for necros or mages killing guards. They will often pay up to 50p for you to sell 100-150 p worth of stuff.

I am usually pretty quick to mention my wife if I find people being a little too friendly to my Female Chanter.
