Debatable. It was the last thing done in the Velious Era (pre-Luclin).

Project M was amazing.

nothing better than being a gnoll pup, laying in wait for an unexpecting noob, and then breaking out the jousting skills :P

About 95% of my classic Beholders Maze experience came from Project M.

I liked it.

Here it could be fun; imagine spawning as the mob that group has been locking down for days. Sort of like red, except with less gc.

Highest lvl mob I remember getting was some lizardman in CT. Explored the zone until a gator or whatever killed me. =<

Imagine spawning as an orc in SRo or a lizard in CT or a goblin in Runnyeye or <otherrandomlowbiezone> and never seeing an actual player character in any zone. Yeah, awesomesauce.

Project M was awesome. Of course people complained because it interfered with their xping or whatever but it was way fun. I also played on a pvp server on live so I guess I actually enjoy more random elements to the game.

Maybe my memories fuzzy, but I remember it being pretty easy to roll up as a moss snake/wolf pup/orc pawn in Gfay/WFP/Qeynos/Nek Forest. Had a lot of fun trying to take over newbie log without being able to chat with other monsters.

Personally I think they should release Project M here, but secretly and only to people who truly helped with the Velious beta. I'm not one of those people so I have no bias, I just think it would be funny to see all the initial threads of mobs being bugged or pathing being messed up.

Project M in VP plz. I don't think I'd miss the era of training and ledges if I could run around VP as a fear wurm.

what is project M

Project M was a very short-lived experiment (I think just a weekend) where players could choose to spawn as a monster. Basically, in the create-a-character screen, there would be an option to be a monster. You'd be assigned a monster randomly (I think there were a bunch of options, but I don't think any of them were crazy high-level; mainly level 1-15ish stuff IIRC) and you'd spawn as it. Then you could explore your zone and attack other monsters or actual players. You couldn't zone; you had to stay in the zone you were in. You also couldn't chat. Basically, you could only do what the monster could do, except you could control it, and I think you could even level up.

It was really fun and a lot of people got a kick out of it, but it was never heard from again. Nilbog has said that he might be interested in pursuing Proejct M after Velious development was done, IIRC.

Project M was turned into the Monster Missions on EQLive.

Eqemu is capable of doing it, Project M is alive and well.

Imagine not being so sour about everything. Besides, on p99 you're pretty likely to find peeps in those zones.

Yeah, I think the basis for MM was on that code. I played the hell out of Monster Missions. Kind of gay when I look back on it, but good loot potential and XP. :D

I remember hearing this got cancelled so swiftly due to some sort of exploits, which I have zero idea about, anyone have any facts about how this fun idea was abused on live?

I think the "exploit" was people grouping up as monsters and attacking lowbies. Normal mobs can't jump so people would hop around to indicate they were not a normal npc mobs. Otherwise I don't see how you can exploit this if the best mob you can spawn as is lvl 15. Though this is only going off what I've seen in the last "Project M" thread.

It had to be around for more than one weekend right?

If not, guess it happens I started playing EQ that weekend then as I remember running around as a gnoll in qeynos.

myriverse

It was far too random to reliably exploit, but there were griefers that would camp newbie PC spawn points, often in groups. That's the main reason it was ended quickly.

Can anyone remember, was it just on the zeks or on all servers?

I think it was on test server for quite some time IIRC... it could be that you logged into that, Foldupmonk?

Didn't play on Test ever.
Only server I ever logged into was Zeb. Had to have been on there at some point. Though I remember playing it more than a weekend I thought. Actually played it about as much as my live toon so I could hope to get into the zone I was leveling in and look around.

It was on all servers. Part of the reason Sony pulled it is because of the PVP element it brought to PVE.

I think you are right about that. But it was on the Test Server the longest. Maybe 3 weeks?? It was fun as hell though, but probably scared the crap out of a lot of noobs and they left for good lol. Not what Sony wanted on their Bottom Line though.
