View Full Version : is the game still really really freaking dark?

The top screenshot is a human with no light source equipped in the back of EC tunnel.

The bottom screenshot is a halfling with no light source equipped

At the very least, shouldn't those big fires be giving out some light? A fire that big, I'd think would put out decent light.

Standing right next to them it is still completely pitch black on the human, and no change on the halfling.

Big fires?

Those fires are as big as I am! I consider that a big fire. Maybe you are a flame size-queen.

The more I think about this... I never really spent much time playing as a human or a race that can't see in the dark... I'm now all of the sudden wondering if this location for the store was a really bad pick.

Although I swear it was never this dark before the recent changes.

You know the darkness is correct when those "big fires" are the only thing humans see.

seriously, dark elves used to serve a purpose... people used to consider night vision more than stun imunity when considering racials.

I miss pure 100% classic EQ only haha Also, classic UI, you couldn't see SHIT anyways lol... now I can see like 4-5x as much of the world at once on my screen

This is actually easily fixed by patching.

I had the exact same problem, ran an older patch...and it fixed it completely.

Night vision penalties are one of those things that would never make it in any mmo anymore. "Too hard," "pointless hassle," etc. -- nerf minded ne'er-do-wells, who think the ideal game is one which plays itself, they have no balls.

racial night vision penalties 4eva

Just as long as you realize your human should be completely blind without a vision spell at night in most zones... we'll be good when this is made truly classic

Right now? We've gotten a big step forward

Hell, I had trouble at night in Nektulos on my first dark elf when I started him

Best of luck to whoever codes it

None of it means anything if people find a dozen ways around it. People don't want classic.

People want classic if ez ways around the classic mechanics are not basically handed to them. Like take bards -- who must be nerfed mercilessly until they become known as "oh, that singing ranger class?" -- the powerlevel game they run is possible in classic, but was largely unfeasible back in the olden days of regular game and zone crashes and assorted ld's. Likewise, the ease with which third party programs can now be run has caused the devs to take measures. This is the reason boxing is banned too: it is just way too easy to do in today's technological world.

So the devs have to take measures sometimes to keep things classic. It removes the temptation. And yet, the server thrives. Why? Because people do want classic; they just sometimes have to be nudged and reminded, that classic is the deal here. And they stay.

Crossing my fingers that happens eventually. My first character was a human and I just ran my ass back into Qeynos when the sun went down. Venturing out further and further from civilization became quite terrifying, even with a light source.

I also remember infravision casting a reddish tint on enemies at night. Ugh, that needs to happen.

!!!!

Now the game is bright enough to function, but these screenshots seem way over-gamma'd, including the first ones that I posted. My gamma seems to be way overblown now.

I'm going to need to take a page from Stargazer's book and play EQ with shades on...

Damn, if you want Classic just turn your Gamma way down low. How hard is that? :D I bet a zero EVERTHING will be pitch black.

You don't understand that having a non classic light levels in game totally throws off all the game balance?
You understand that the lighting changes are hard coded due to later DirectX versions, right? It's very difficult to achieve classic light levels with modern equipment.

You know why he wears the glasses in the daytime right, AND is always warm - fuzzy - happy?
Let's just say that's not only coffee in his mug.

What he doesn't realize is that there's no EQ at the Betty Ford clinic - better shape up.

The P99 Devs did eventually try a fix, but it still wasn't correct, so they reversed it.
