Have an older motherboard using an IDE to connect the optical drive.
I bought a new optical drive which is only SATA. I am aware of the
conversion card available but had a question.

Is it possible to use one of the SATA connections on the motherboard that
would normally plug to another hard drive but instead plug it to
the new optical drive? If so how would i prioritize?

..The connection on the motherboard is how most people connect their sata optical drives. Shouldnt matter which slot you put it in cause your bios has the boot order already saved.

So...if i understand your response correctly, only the driver software is
relevant to operate the optical drive with any SATA or IDE connection
on the motherborad?

Yes. Just plug the sata plug into motherboard and into DVD drive and it will act the exact same way as if you did it with a IDE connection.

SATA is like USB but for internal parts as opposed to external peripherals. AKA it's universal.
