So I log in to my bard, who's been using a Cat o' Nine Tails for about a month now (and paid a pretty penny for), only to find that it's been nerfed into practical worthlessness...

Stat bonuses stripped away, delay increased from 30 to 36, proc level raised from 9 to 20.

Thanks a lot, guys.

"I'm quitting because they fixed an exploit on a weapon I was using. Stupid game trying to be balanced!"

Good riddance.

The only thing I think is happening is that some items were modified from original state on live and alla mirrors that not old eq.

Was the proc lvl on this item intentionally moved to lvl20? didn't see it in the notes, but it is changed now.

Thanks.

Call me crazy, but I thought Classic through Velious never had a minimum level on procs from weapons. I thought that was introduced after Velious when they put minimum levels on higher level buff spells and such.

there were minimum levels for procs, they just weren't printed on the item until later.

That would be interesting. Every low level int caster would be running around with a Staff of Writhing and dex gear slaughtering mobs with melee.

Any evidence to back this up?

My SK had Dark Reaver for like ten levels and it never procced, meaning that minimum level procs did at least exist through the Kunark/Velious era. I'm pretty sure most people remember it this way.

Well I specifically remember twinking a warrior during the Velious days with a Venomous Axe of the Velium Brood. I gave it to him around level 10 and the axe has a 85dd proc. It indeed did proc immediately and I was practically one-shotting even con mobs at that level. I got about 10-15 levels of awesomeness before a patch came out which added the Recommended level on many weapons with procs, including that axe ofcourse.

I know no items ever said Required or Recommended level before that patch, but idk if some items still wouldn't proc before certain levels. Most likely many of them didn't.

Just because one item procs at a low level does not mean all items proc at low levels. It has always been dependent on the item some proc very low some proc very high it was all in the design of the weapon.

if i remember correctly, the "Recommended level" weapons did not have full stats or full dmg/delay until that level. So the lowbie could still use it, just not at full power. Unknown if it applied to procs.

Proc levels had nothing to do with recommended or required levels.

this...

my first ever character was a midget rogue who was given a dagger of dropping while quite young. it would always say i didn't have the power to use the proc. i didn't have any idea what it meant at the time until i hit level 15 and then it all made sense (it started working). that was during the kunark expansion.

There most certainly was a min lvl for procs in classic EQ. I camped my Paladin's Ghoulbane and distinctly remember getting many many "Your will is not sufficient to command this weapon" messages in Rucksif's room in Unrest until I got to (IIRC) 35 when it would proc. I'm certain I had left Unrest and was into Lguk before it would.

While playing classic, I remember people /OOCing and asking what level an item procs and people replying with a range of answers.

You guys are right, I was wrong.

I searched through tons of patch notes and couldn't find anything to back up my earlier claim. I remember thinking about the Copper Hammer of Striking with the 179 DD stun useable at level 1. They later changed that weapon to lvl 50 req.

So yes, the procs have always been level limited. With some being changed/fixed later on.
