I know this is a stupid question, but how do they work? The answer may help me with the problem I'm having. When the server is patched do you have to download anything or what?

I doubt your problem has to do with patches. Most are server side and therefore are unaffected by your game files. They let us know if any new files need to be downloaded/replaced.

If you're a new player, make sure you follow the setup instructions to the letter. Everything should work fine.
