I play a shaman at lv 47, but three friends are thinking of starting the game too. One wants to play ench and the other two were considering druid and wizard. It is my feeling that perhaps a necro would be a better replacement for the wizard and im not sure about how a druid fits in too good either. Could be nice to bolster healing for shammy till torpor I guess. But velious mobs have big hps and resists, are wizards really a decent classin this era or would dotting mobs down with a necro and charm pet work better?

shaman
enchanter
monk/warrior
druid/wizard (guessing you want ports, if you don't need ports then play a rogue)

Cheers Hippo. Given that Knight exp penalties are perhaps on the way out soon would a knight be a decent option also instead of monk or warrior for more reliable aggro.

I would rather have the monk or warrior. The knight classes are better for easy grinding but the warrior would be great for doing tougher content with just your friends. Monks are good too.

If we were going with the primary purpose of a charm pet tank would a real tank and any melee be necessary at all or could it all be done with range classes.

If you are trying to charm the entire way then you may want a cleric.
Also charm doesn't work as well in Velious so keep that in mind.

Dammit I was hoping to take on arena in Kael and such like with a charm pet but it maybe tougher then than I initially thought.

Small group enchanters will still be good but you will be limited with that group in some areas. Arena you can charm wolves and you can do PoM if you want to gear up without raiding.
Dwarves, giants, etc can't be charmed and can't even be mezzed I think.

Play what you/they will enjoy playing. Period. "But we are..." Shh! Play for fun, nothing else. Play the class you all want to play.

First play what you want to play. But for an all caster group necro, shaman, mage is good. As for taking on Kael COME ON. IMO Kael is gonna be worse then karnors with everyone trying to get the armor.

If your friends are starting and you are 47, you should start a new toon and level with them.

Well we play euro time and not in prime euro time mostly an hour here or there in afternoons, so I would feel the potential to do some kael might be there but we have plenty of other ideas too. My main worry about casters is how they scale up in long fights in Velious. Wizards im particular I would guess are done once the mana pool is blown. My idea was perhaps to start again on cleric and have cleric chanter tank and rogue. Would that be more effective as a 4 man team than a group with casters?

Wizards are awful when it comes to groups, but if you have a chanter AND a bard, they will be pretty good.

When Velious comes out you will NEED DPS. And a SK sure as hell is not DPS. Take the Wizard. :p And evacs will save your ass on top of it.

All casters group work well: grab a chanty, a cleric and fill the other slots with whatever casters you guys want to play. Alternatively, play an all mage group and rock the world.
