In FFXI it was a common courtesy to ask someone before looking at their gear. I wasn't around in classic EQ, was that not also a common courtesy there?

Oh, people asked and people got offended if you didn't ask. Some do so on P99. It was and still is ridiculous.

I never understood this phenomenon. Just inspect, there nothing you can do to stop them or prevent it.

IIRC it started as more of a respect thing, having one chat box and being spam inspected was annoying as hell back then. A silly notion since you couldn't stop it to begin with.

But it's a huge flag that anyone asking before inspecting you is an old school gamer, emphasis on the old.

I think it's a good way to start a conversation with someone if nothing else. It's a courtesy that I will always make an effort to extend to players. Inspecting someone is like peeking at the tag on their T-Shirt to see what brand it is, I'd rather have someone ask before doing that. However it's not something that I immediately /ignore a player for doing. Rather, the ones that do ask set themselves apart as g33k mentioned above. Reminders of older times.

I remember leading a begging level 3 (i think) half elf paladin into the North Freeport bank vault with a trail of mrylokar's summoned daggers.

I bet his ghost still haunts the Xegony server Nfp bank to this day...

Since this literally just happened to me, I'll put it out there: I'm camping somewhere on my own and some guy walks into the camp, runs around between me and the spawns, inspects me without asking, then I get a "click to join the group" message without any polite conversation. This is the kind of behavior that, to me, is the same as a night elf dancing on a mailbox.

On live you can disable the "so and so is inspecting you" so it is a non issue. Here you can't, and I assign a lower maturity value to anyone not asking first.

Not even saying "hello", or "would you like to group" before inviting falls in the same category. I lower my expectations of that individual again.

No, it's nothing like that at all. You can't reasonably equate someone using an in-game ability without your permission to someone violating your personal space and touching you IRL.

If we were not meant to be able to inspect people without their permission, it wouldn't have been implemented into the game without a way for players who didn't want to be inspected to elect out in some form.

What it evolved into after this is both player-made and completely stupid.

The horrors of 2hr play time then disconnect, such bad timing always. Reconnect to your bind location >_> Dial Up lol

Something cringey from live was that there was a dark elf family in my guild <United Kingdoms> (Bristlebane). I think the surname was T'Solstice and a bunch of em had it. There was an in depth back story and I even think someone made a family tree!

I was grouped in MM during Velious era and someone in my group tricked me on my monk into locking myself in those cells, problem was the group promptly wiped and disbanded and I was stuck there for like 2 hours before the next group rolled in.

caused alot of conflict ... my friend married a barb war (of all the choices for a dwarf) and she wanted to barrow his wurmslayer .. easily worth more then everything he owned .. never saw her or the wurmslayer again... but the weddings where awesome GMs involvement and everything ..alot of times WC druid rings where used

You're violating my personal space in game, and the game lets me know by giving me a message that you're doing it. I think the fact that there were a lot of players that decided it was an invasion of personal space is just another part of the community that made old MMOs what they were. It created a grey area which sparked debate that brought the entire population closer by giving them the ability to decide right and wrong use of a feature. The very fact that there is something for us to argue about is what makes it so awesome.

Anyone that got offended by it, other than the handful of roleplayers who started it, were only offended because it was socially acceptable to be and made them feel a tiny bit superior. *cough* (tumblr)

Point taken, you're right it is a way of setting myself up on a pedestal. One day I'll decide what my new pronouns are, still haven't worked that out yet, struggling with my inner self

:derp:

Sorry, I meant you should turn off the stupid message (dunno if it's in options pop-up only or if there's a command for it.) That is one of the most useful spam filters in the game. You have only yourself to blame if you see "Soandso is inspecting you" messages. Nobody's invading your space, it's all on you. You're looking for something to be offended by, and by golly you found it.

There's more than plenty of stupid shit in the game design and other players' behavior that is completely unavoidable. Why are you inviting idiot spam that you can ban forever with a mouseclick? You have the power, you have the control, yet you insist on using that power and control to shit up your own gaming experience. Why do you hate yourself?

On second thought, could the whole "may i inspect" thing be derived from the PvP servers where it actually was pretty fucked up to do?

kaev
03-12-2015, 04:45 PM
Nah, "may I inspect" was a thing from the beginning. It made sense then, mostly because you couldn't turn the stupid message off since the devs were utterly clueless about the difference in social dynamics between a random collection of 1500 anonymous neckbeards & preteens & perverts online vs. 6 nerds who know each other face-to-face around a table.

I still ask to inspect sometimes... I feel no shame in it! More often, though, I'll send a message and ask someone to link me their really nice looking item that interests me.

Any SK or War I see with their epic i almost always ask them to link me it :P Its just badass!

Does the message show up in the inspection window? I put a rude message in there and have never had any comments form people inspecting me. I feel it doesn't or maybe I'm just not being rude enough.

I remember an old article on EQ Castersrealm that said at high levels you can cast while running.

You could cast, run around, and as long as you ended the cast at the same location it started you'd usually finish the cast. In PvP or mass PVP run to corner, cast, gtfo out of corner, get back before cast ends. As melee hang near corner and pound casters doing this...

Arterian

This article was certainly not referring to that. It was flat out cast on the move.
