I understand that you have to be active at a static spawn camp to hold it but what if you FD or just go AFK for days at a time so the casual look will make it appear that you are camping but really you aren't? I understand anyone has the right to pull if you are afk but unless you are constantly checking how would you know they aren't working that camp? Is it within the rules to hold a camp this way?
Is there a difference between an xp camp spot and a coveted loot item spot? thanks in advance!

If you kill a PH while the person is AFK it's your camp.
If it's a multi mob PH it's more complicated but for the most part those mobs aren't really campable. A good example is the dude who was camping AC before me, he was AFK and lost the camp even though he was only gone for four minutes because someone else killed the PH while he wasn't there.
Those are the rules.
Also, if it's something like what happened today and you kill the mob the camp is for like the AC and get a ring while the person who currently holds the camp is afk, the camp defaults to whoever was next in line if there was a line, or the person who's camp you stole. I've seen if go both ways. When you hold a camp like that and you receive the item from the camp that it's for you can hand it to anyone but if there are others waiting for the camp you can't just stay there even if you've only killed one mob.

dont forget, there is a stipulation in the rules that says, if someone is AFK and a named is up you can take it, "within reason". That means if its the AC camp and the camper is afk for 2 mins and you swoop in and take it, and then he petitions a GM and says, "my dog just spilled milk all over my desk and, I've been here for 4 hours and this guy wont give it back to me!" :( the GM will likely side with the person who was honestly just a little slow on returning from the restroom or something...
if he came back like 4 mob cycles in, then they'll likely side with the person who just took over the camp, its all up to the GM's discresion but they want us to work it out ourselves.
so yea, you have the right to take the camp if PH is up, but you should do it within reason, not just be a douche and be like NOPE! sorry NOPE MINE NOPE GO HOME..

I'll have to let my friend know about that then. That actually happened to him earlier today. He had been there for five hours, he with linkdead and was gone for less than 2 min and actually hailed the AC, I have it in my logs. There was another person who KNEW he was there camping it who ran over and killed the AC and looted it before he got back. She then corpsed the ring and got back in line, not only that but tried to cut in line and be next right after me despite their being a line of five people or so. The guy who was originally just done with the camp for a while after having that happen. I'll see what happens . . .
Of course the person who ganked it will claim innocence but w/e.

You know those same rules say it isn't as much a line as much as a "whoever they feel like" is next.

Sort of, but the camp holder must name the player next in line when asked and cannot change the name thereafter. S/he must also wait for the player next in line to arrive or the camp becomes FFA.
If the names is up though and someone is afk at restroom or something it shouldn't be open season provided they've posted an afk message, are not away an extended period of time and have remained active otherwise (clearing ph etc.). This seems to fall within a grey area of the rules though.

It seems like there is no set in stone rule, the GM just kind of decides based on the logs and what both people say.
I saw the turnkey pop and there were people in the basement, so I didn't pull it. 10 minutes later it is still up, so I took it. There was a petition, and the GM sided with me. The GM said you should pull the named / PH within 5 minutes if you are camping it.
Personally, I think 5 mins isn't enough time if you are at a camp with a lot of mobs, but 10 seemed like enough.

In game example between myself and Kiriakis
1. Azeth arrives at Allizewsaur
2. Kiriakis is present but Allize is up and wandering
3. Azeth says in /say near Kiriakis "camp check"
4. No response for 5 minutes or so
5. Azeth kills Allizewsaur and takes the camp
6. Kiriakis comes back from AFK and concedes camp & buffs me with DMF
That's an actual example of exactly how the camp rules work regarding an AFK camper.
