From what I hear both are very scarce. You may find more groups with a warrior, but if you wanna solo go with a ranger? Hope I helped, btw, I've only been on this server a day or so...so you know...wait for some other people to pitch lol, just giving my 2cp.

sorry i couldnt resist. but honestly, warriors.
but really, play what you like, rangers are still sought after for tracking or filler dps.

Rangers generally aren't needed, because they don't fill any unique role or do anything better than everyone else. There's not a lot of them, but it's hard to call it a shortage when a lack of rangers is so inconsequential.
There's a severe shortage of tanks, and warriors are the best raid tanks. There isn't a crippling lack of them, but a tank is what most groups end up lacking after it has everything else. Playing a warrior in this era tends to be pretty horrible, though, and the gear is awfully expensive. It doesn't get really good until you're sporting a pair of SSoY and preferably a haste item as well. These are prohibitively expensive for anyone's first character, and also pretty much perma-camped.

Aren't most classes pretty inconsequential? You can do the whole game with war/cle/enc if you wanted to. The rest is just flavor.

As a ranger, I am telling you. Play a warrior if you enjoy being in a group.

Kromwell has been rejected due to groups having to share my -40% exp penalty.

Granted rangers probably aren't very useful in raids later on, pre-37 they're probably better tanks than warriors, since they can actually hold aggro. They also have slight CC abilities. So basically, they're like Bards but shittier.

I swear i read that the -40% exp penalty doesn't apply to groups on p99. They left the penalty for hybrids and for races, but did not make it apply to groups.

Nope, it is in there. Group with a hybrid, share the pain.

yup, at least pallies and SK's are bad ass tanks and make up for the 40% hit!

In your opinion, when do Rangers become worth their 40% experience penalty?
Kunark?
Velious?

No really, when archery mastery 3 was introduced.

Never, that is why all of those things were removed by SoE.

Odd.. you'd think they'd make rangers 40% better than the norm with a hefty penalty like that.

You'd think they wouldn't give a snake the ability to kick as well, but lets not try and put logic into our everquest please.

An untwinked warrior will never be able to solo like a ranger can and we take a beating better than a druid. /shrug

Rangers can tank in groups just fine, I tanked most of the time all the way to 50. Warriors tank better but a ranger with decent items can do well and can hold aggro at least, so it depends what you are killing IMHO. Of course SK or paladin would be a better choice.
At raid level it's different, rangers are mostly DPS and CC. Warriors are tanks. So if you aim for raiding, do you want to be a tank or DPS/CC?

I lol'd.
Rangers are really good actually... on ez server. All they need is AM3 and a 145dmg / 20 dly bow.
Rangers in kunark with their epics are quite beasty too. Slow, and good dmg / dly on the weps.
Generally the case with them is, they're useful in many situations, but never essential in any situation :) If you're good at making friends then you'll get invited to groups, if not, then you'll be lfg and people looking for a tank won't touch you, and people looking for melee dps will probably leave you too.

I played a ranger till lvl 55 and Id have to say that geting groups was pretty hard but it was also challenging. The Real question is to SoW or not to SoW
And that is a toughey.
Seeing it will take a week to get EQ titanium i guess i have a lot of time to think on it.

Rangers will become useful at level 60.
When they can pre-tank with weapon shield.

We do decent DPS once we get our epics, however I had my epics in kunark and I had to shelves earthcaller quite a bit (at least during the first part of the fight). If i got a proc or two off before the tank got good agro, guess who was going splat.
played a ranger during the real classic, being the deathtouch bitch was a blast...

You can solo as a warrior with rune proc weapons. But why would you need to? The hardest part about being a Warrior is deciding which one of your multiple group invites to answer.

yes the correct answer to this is not a yes or no...
the 40% penalty is shared by the group. splitting 40% penalty over 6 players doesn't hurt that much thereby making it almost not apply
what hurts is when you have 3+ hybrids with 40-68% penalties. it adds up

Sadly, you read wrong.
Playing a warrior, lvl 52 currently, I can say that they are 100% awful to play untwinked. Thankfully I have a core group of friends that I play with that are willing to put up with me waiting for a proc to solidify agro.
I played a ranger from March 16th 1999 to when I quit to go play EQ2 Beta. Thankfully I had a solid guild and group of people that knew what I could do. Also helped that none of them knew about the XP penalty before-hand.
With experience from both I can tell you that I've never had to make the ranger /role or /anon to avoid the constant stream of group invites like I have on my Warrior here. LOL.

Here is my rule of thumb when grouping with hybrids, if you have/want to include a hybrid in your group make sure they are several levels lower than you and you won't notice the exp difference as much. For instance i'm a 57 war and if I wanted to get a hybrid to tank so I could zerk for dps I'd probably find a 54 hybrid. We would have roughly the same experience so I wouldn't notice the exp hit as much. If I invited a 58 hybrid he would have a much higher total exp accumulated amount then me and I would notice a difference in exp. I love hybrids, I have a 60 paladin and appreciate the class' versatility, but you have to decide if adding a hybrid brings enough value to the group to warrant the exp they garner.

Unless you just really want to be a ranger, pick another class.
