I just bought a G TX 970 and I am wanting to replace my fx 6300 and current mobo with Intel gear. So I have looked a little bit and I want an i5 but not sure which are OC capable. I also don't know much about mobos but I do know I will never use more than one gpu so SLI mobos are not being considered unless I have to But i do for sure want to overclock Thanks for any information! Google is so overwhelming.

Looking to spend about 300, no more than 400 at very most

i5-****K (the K = OC possible)

Dunno about motherboards but you want an i5 4690k.

Last couple of systems I built I used gigabyte mobo's. No complaints.

Also as a note, if you can wait, the new Intel chipset and CPUs will be out 2015-Q4/2016-Q1 I believe. New chipset will open up usage of DDR4 RAM and the newer CPUs.

If you can't wait, it's not that big of a jump to worry about for a few years unless you want to spend a ton of money to have the latest. I'm still running the i5 2K series just fine on everything. I build my systems on a 4-6 year replace schedule. I figure I'll build a new system summer/fall of 2016.

$400 for CPU + MOBO? Here's what I'm currently running...

CPU (i5-4690k):

Motherboard: The second one (MSI brand) is $10 more but I find it more aesthetically pleasing. It's also the mobo I'm using.

You're prolly gonna want an aftermarket CPU cooler if you plan on overclocking that 4690k; decent ones range in price from about $50 to $100+

Lemme know what case you have for measurements and I'll give you a few cooler options. I'm running my 4690k with a Noctua NH-D14 cooler. It's pretty huge and comes with two fans on it, yet it's so effective that I removed BOTH fans for 100% silent operation and it keeps my CPU temps more than low enough

Just quick question. Do you used the processor's GPU or do you have a separate video card. If you have separate card which i presume you do why would you spend the extra money on a chip with GPU built in over just getting one without? Asking this as i havent built a gaming system in 3-4 years and dont really keep up with that kind of stuff. I usually just build cheap rigs for people that just need them for browsing the net and crap.

Will the overclocking show enhanced graphics and quicker load times? A guy at work today made it seem if I wasn't going to SLI then he didnt get why I want to overclock and now come to think about it, I don't really know why either. I don't know jack about OC. Never had a system that could do it. Does it make games look even better or perform better? I would assume both or one of the two.

I just really want to play games with smooth frames and some kind of quality to its visuals

And thanks for the links man, when I measure my case I'll let ya Know. the case is from like 01' or some non sense. I got it when the neon lights first started showing up in PC builds a long while ago, lol.

Why do you want to overclock your cpu? You're going from amd mid low price range to a much faster cpu in the first place. Kinda pointless. Having a 970 with a lower cpu/ram/mobo isn't efficient. You will be bottle necked anyways and won't even live up to the potential of the video card. Getting a i5 good combo will do a lot. You could have saved 150 on a video card, gone higher with cpu/mobo and sitll be able to handle a lot if not most games anyways.

Even if you get a cpu to overclock, if you get a crap motherboard ( pretty much all motherboards come with duel video card pci slots) overclocking won't work. If it does, it won't do much at all.

All the i5s and i7s have the on-die GPUs built into them.

The newer Haswell-E 6 and 8 core Intel CPUs don't.....but they run from $390 to $1000 for the CPU, $250+ for the cheapest 2011 socket motherboards, and they require the new DDR4 RAM which is absurdly expensive still (read: $400 for 16gb type of nonsense)

Going from the FX-6300 to the i5 4690k will be like night and day. Mainly, it's going to increase your MINIMUM framerates in games - this is likely your problem right now.

I'm running a single gtx 980 and the i5 4670K CPU (generation before your 4690k). My CPU runs @ 3.4ghz but the MSI motherboard BIOS just sets the CPU automatically to 3.9ghz (the CPUs turbo boost speed).

A 4690k and gtx 970 should be able to run just about any game on the market at 60+FPS, ultra graphics settings, and 1080p resolution.

That last tidbit just made my day. I got the 970 because I wanted something that would last a few years.. and because I am way too pumped for Battlefront and NEED to crank those graphics on that for sure. I'll probably go with some MSI mobo and the 4690k. It looks like it's right in my price range. =D

Also this site is a treasure trove of information.

http://www.overclock.net/f/5/intel-cpus. LOTS of knowledgeable people post there including official reps of all the major companies. MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS, Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Corsair etc etc etc.

You have any questions about overclocking your CPU when you get it, ask em there they'll sort you out right quick
