View Full Version : So, would 'Velious' be a horrible name?
My wife and I are expecting our second child here in the next few weeks (5/3 is supposedly the "due date") and we're having a tough time coming up with names for him that we both really like.
Jokingly last night I threw out the name "Velious" because we're both fans of unique names and my wife is now -really- into it. She's already come up with how she'd nick name him "V" for short and she says it's a front runner for her...
Now, I like it too, but I feel I might be biased and for all the wrong reasons....
I also get that most of you here will also be pretty biased...
but on a serious note, is Velious a good name to have for your entire life? Naming someone is a huge responsibility to me and I definitely don't want to do so lightly...
So I guess what I'm asking everyone is if Velious is a good unique name for a child, or if it's -too- "out there" and I'm just setting my kid up for a really shitty time in life?
Thoughts?

Unless you are The Rock incognito or are imparting similar quality genes to your son...you are just setting him up to get the absolute fuck beat out of him on a daily basis in school.
I get not wanting to name him john smith...but find some middle ground. I think the only way the Stars get away with naming their kid Apple, or platypus or whateverthefuck they do is because they have the money and privilege to smooth the way.

Teach your kids that their actions and accomplishments make them unique, not having an ethnic, 90210, or nerd name. Try to achieve more yourselves instead of trying to be special snowflakes vicariously through your kids.

Kids will find reasons to bully kids. Anything will do. If it's not a name it's something else.
If his first name is that far out there you can't throw in a common middle name. Also wouldn't do it unless you have a last name to match.

The answer is no. Do not name your child after a continent on a 15 yr old elf simulator. If you do though, I'll lump you into the same crowd of people who say their vows in klingon "language" or take family photos dressed up storm troopers.

You just know that everyone he meets in life is going to ask where the name comes from/what it means and he's going to have to say that his parents named him after a continent in an old mmo...
I don't think I'd want to have to explain that to everyone I met during my lifetime.
haha these comments have been great to read. thanks for the honesty :) I think the majority are pretty much confirming what I was already feeling, and that is that the name is just a little bit too far out there. Even if the name was super sweet I don't know if I could back up my reasoning with "It's from an elf sim created in the 90's that I loved and played until you were born. It has magic and elves and dragons and shit." okay yeah, it'd just be too much. I couldn't do it.

People always ask where i got my sons name from and i say "I stay up late and watch random things like Tour de France and always like the name of one Australian rider named Cadel Evans". It's funny we have actually had 3 people ask if thats where we got his name from in 8 years. Goes to show how much americans care about biking lol.

You should probably ask people who've never played EQ. It's going to have a biased connotation for anyone here. It definitely doesn't sound like a boys name tho.
If youre going to give them some bizarre first name, just make sure to give them some bland and normal middle name they can use if/when they decide their parents suck at naming things.

Always was a fan of roman'esque names:

Wife had none of it. Both kids with normal names. She's the smart one.

I only suggested it to my wife as a joke, she's got no sense of humor.
Ended up going by the old standard in my family:
First born son is always named after the fathers father ( first name ), and the mothers father ( middle name ). To honour the grand parents. 2nd son & daughters have no traditional naming convention in my family.

I'm the only grandchild to produce children so far(i'm 32 and none of my other cousins are under 20 now)...but i carried on one of our family names with my youngest sons middle name. Luckily it's a cool name "Storm". Was my great grandfathers last name and 1 of my cousins is actually first named Storm and another cousin has Storm for a middle name so thought it was only proper to continue to pass it down.
