What bands/musicians do you think will stand the test of time? Excluding classic composers like Wagner, Bach, etc. Who are the musical geniuses of the 20th and 21st centuries that will be listened to in the 22nd century and beyond?

unfortunately for music in the last 15 years, it is not the greats who will be remembered, it is the popular. Is Justin Beibler an artist? no. will he be remembered forever as a defining character of this generation? Yes. its sad; really fucking sad. the true artists have no recognition, and will likely die with having only being heard by those who seek great music rather than passively listen.
Who are they?
Explosions in the Sky
Thrice
Tool (will be remembered)
RATM
Sublime
Odesza (amazing music)
Kendrick Lamar
Third Eye Blind
and certainly a few others who truly create good music, not simply produce hits.

So Nirvana created the grunge sound, lol? Pretty sure grunge started in the mid 80's and became successful in the early 90s. Hell, even the Pixies and Fugazi predate Nirvana and are much more distinct and talented bands.

actually, Kagey, re-reading his question im realizing he may be referring to 1900-present(that is indeed the 20/21st century). This changes the scope quite a lot...
in addition to the previous,
Led Zeppeling
Pink Floyd
The Doors
Credence
Queen
Eagles
Bob Marley
Jimi Hendrix
Santana
basically a who's who of the 60s and 70s. This time period truly produced some of the most amazing music that will come out of this century, and indeed centuries to come. I think we are honestly seeing the death of actual instruments, and the birth of the computerized music. Most studio albums are not even made by instruments in studios. Its one dude making all the music on a computer and mixing and layering it all with the lyrics of some down syndrome fucking CK wearing pussy Biebler bitch slapped on top to sell it. There will be no more Jimmy Pages, John Frusciantes, or Terry Reids. The generation of the autotune is upon us.

Richard D. James will probably be one of the few legends of our era that leaves behind a legacy and whose fame will only grow after he's dead. Not a huge fan of his music or persona, though I love the Selected Ambient Works series.

The Beatles and the Stones definitely have longevity, but I don't think there will ever be a resurgence of interest in the '60s-era bands akin to Beatle-mania and the like. Their heyday - the period in which they saw the most success and recognition - pretty much occurred while they were selling out stadiums full of screaming fans. Since then interest in their music or at least in the culture of celebrity surrounding them as bands, whether posthumous or not, has only declined - even if they're still inarguably a mainstay of popular culture and a celebrated point of reference. You might be able to say otherwise about Michael Jackson - I think everyone will still be talking about him just as fervently in another 100 years as they did when he was alive, and he'll still be selling records too.
I'm glad you mentioned Robert Johnson and not Elvis Presley, though; I very much hope in 100 years everyone will be talking about him instead of Elvis, but I fear otherwise. As for Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix I'm not really sure, but I kinda feel the same way about them as I do the other '60s megaliths. I have a theory they won't last half as long as topics of cultural interest as Michael Jackson will, because they're inextricably tied to rock and roll. All indications today tell us that rock music is on its way out, and Michael Jackson as we all know wasn't the king of rock.

You expect people from the current generation to remember anything that happened more than 5 years ago? Once the last person born before 2000 dies, no one will care.

Guns n Roses. They actually ushered Rock and Roll back to life out of the soft ass early and mid 80's pop. Still can throw in Appetite for Destruction and the music is relevant today.

In 100 years I hope people just reference the Rolling Stones and other "British invasion" bands as a bunch of white kids who got rich singing old blues songs written by mostly dirt poor black Americans.

The Beatles (I doubt this one due to the baby boomers dying out.)
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Johny Cash
Tool
Those that I would like to:
Emperor
Opeth
Ihsahn
Ulver (These guys have potential to actually do it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIrhUneRifA)
Creedence Clearwater Revival
All Zydeco
Dire Straits
Led Belly
Robert Johnson

What about that Elvis guy? Take out the British invasion bit.
British musicians/bands wrote the book on music in the 60s/70s/ (maybe 80s).
You can keep your rap/hip hop ;)

I'm an old fart so I go back a bit with what I like,
The Beatles started it all for me, and the Stones are ancient and still going.
Cream were the original power trio. Clapton was a guitar god back then.
2 words, Pink Floyd.
Led Zeppelin were HUGE. Still relevant on rock radio today.
Black Sabbath influenced much of the grunge and stoner rock of the 90s.
The Who, created a rock opera.
Queen, created opera rock.
Rush were the technical power trio that influenced Dream Theater, Tool, Foo Fighters and others.
Van Halen were the arena rock kings with a real guitar hero that many tried to emulate. Yeah some bad hair metal came about in their wake but you can't blame them for that shit.
I'm not much of an R&B guy but Stevie Wonder = musical genius, influenced most everyone.
And the band that I followed around the country for years, The Grateful Dead. They spawned a community of homeless followers called Deadheads. They set a lot of trends with their parking lot vendors, different set lists each night, and concert taping. The jam band scene came about and filled the void when Jerry died and they stopped touring.

Great answer. Almost all of EDM et al has this guy to thank for what he's done. Selected ambient works is pure electronic musical genius.
Otherwise the answer is, any musician/band/songwriter who becomes virtuous on his/her instrument or creation of music. There are many across many genres. Really depends on what you like!
Don't let big recording companies influence your taste.
