View Full Version : EQ Music: Reimagined

Grimluck
05-14-2015, 11:05 PM
EQ Music: Reimagined is a project that focuses on giving the classic Everquest soundtrack a modern makeover. One of my main hobbies is music production. I use certain tools to “reimagine” the original classic music with updated instrumentation, attempt to retain the “classic feel” of the music while giving it freshness, like when we all first heard the great sounds of Norrath.

My main goal with this project is to “reimagine” all of the classic themes, and implement those themes in-game. To do this, I have to modify certain files in the Titanium client (similar to what P99 did to implement this classic server, so it's legal). So, I suppose this project would constitute as a mod.

What is the current status of the project?

25 of 65 themes are complete.
Rivervale and Greater Faydark music have been successfully implemented in-game.
At this point, character select music, vendor, and trainer music cannot be implemented in-game unless I have some help (see below)

As of now, there isn’t a rough timeline, yet. I’ve recently gone to college, so that is eating up much of my time. I don’t even really have time to play anymore. However, I hope to finish this project by next year. For now, you can listen to (some) of the themes I have completed on the Soundcloud page (https://soundcloud.com/everquest-music-reimagined). I also have uploaded some of the completed themes as a pack for downloading here (http://www.mediafire.com/download/llk9g8xd3u646w5/Everquest+Music+Reimagined+-+updated+7-5-15.rar).

One last thing: if anyone is experienced in software development, I could use your help with figuring out specifics of certain parts of the code. I need help with modifying the code for correct playback of the character select, vendor, and trainer themes. If you aren’t experienced with coding, but want to contribute, I could also use help with testing. Once I complete a theme, I have to enter the client files and modify values to make the themes work in its intended trigger area. If I had people to help test out implementation of the themes, this project would see the light of day MUCH faster. If you're interested in either, send me a private message.

I hope you enjoy the music!

A+

I've always played with music turned off, but if you reworked all of it I'd just queue it up in a player like Winamp while I'm playing. Also, I'm sure there'd be a way to reimplement the reworked sound files into the game files.

Immersion levels: off the charts.

Hey guys. Been playing EQ since 1999, and have always, always loved its music. If anything can bring back the nostalgia, it would be the music. I'm sure some of you feel the same way. One of my main hobbies is music production and post-production. While the original MIDI music had its charm, I figured it was time its soundtrack had a makeover. If this is popular, and is wanted by the community, I will create more themes, based on what is most wanted to be heard. Here's a quick demo I whipped together to show you what I can do. I will probably go back and remix this so it sounds a bit more natural, but enough with the talk, here's the music.

I like this! Could you also make it with a harp until the last part like the original?

Sure. Like i said, it's just a demo, and it still needs to be reworked a bit, so I was trying to gauge the community's reaction to it. I've been meaning to rework the EQ themes for a while, but just never got around to it.

Just reworked the Kelethin theme. Telin! I finally found a good harp sound, so I replaced the main piano instrument with a beautiful harp. It's more in line with the original. Everyone have a quick listen and let me know what you think! I'll start to work on the original theme and character selection next.

Anyone know if we can actually use these to replace in game music?

It's certainly possible, but it appears to be a bit more difficult than I initially suspected. The main reason for this is that the EverQuest client doesn't actually play sound files when it plays music; it plays MIDI files, which are essentially event lists or instructions for virtual instruments. Basically, it just uses your sound card to reference these instructions and synthesize the audio, and the default instrument sounds that most sound cards end up using sound pretty cheesy. This is why if you have a really old, crappy sound card, EQ music will sound significantly cheesier than if you have a new, up-to-date sound card.

So it would require some actual alteration of the game's code in order to make it load and playback something other than MIDI, and honestly I'm not even sure where to begin doing that. There might be a way to modify the synthusr.dls file in your EQ directory to make it use the virtual instruments that Grimluck is using, but that's assuming all he's doing is replacing virtual instruments with other virtual instruments.

I'm having to put in quite a lot of work to make them sound accurate, not to mention the mixing and mastering I have to do. Even if somehow we modified that file to make it use the instruments I use, it would take an incredible amount of CPU power to make it seamless. Not to mention all of the licenses that one would have to buy. Basically, it's not an option. However, I'm sure it's possible to modify the code to make it play an .mp3 file (which a quick scan through your EQ directory shows this is already possible). In that sense, it would be very likely. But, man, would it be awesome to be able to listen to these files while playing!

Okay. I have a collection of most, if not all of the old MID tracks that I can use to render high quality themes for all of EQ's music, but I need the help of a developer. If there is a way to write scripts or modify the code to playback the mp3's that I'm making of the themes in game, I will commit myself to this project of remaking all of the themes, but as of right now, I don't think it's possible to do with mp3 files. Would this be something that is wanted by the players? Devs: is this even possible to do in game? I know it's possible to play mp3's in game, but what about playing the correct themes at the correct points in a zone? Maybe modify the code to reference and playback certain mp3's at certain points in a zone instead of using the XML files for MIDI playback?

Not sure if it's considered illegal distribution of copyrighted material or not. Anyone care to chime in on this?

That's a valid point, I suppose. I was just thinking along the lines of all of the remixes and stuff out there on YouTube and other sites, that this might fall under some kind of fair use, fan derivatives. Are you actually modifying the original files or are you remaking them? That would probably be the key distinction.

Grimluck
05-23-2015, 07:55 PM
Depends on how you define "modify". I open the MIDI files in my program, assign virtual instruments, and mix the individual instruments so everything is cohesive and natural sounding. I add some effects, as well as master the songs. Sometimes it takes quite a bit of work. So, I guess that would fall under modifying the files. However, i think it is important to note that I do not, have not, and will not take credit for anything other than "rearranging", which means I take the steps listed above to make them sound good with my virtual instruments; just like Jay initially tweaked his parameters to sound good in the MIDI environment he was using. If Jay Barbeau were interested in doing the same, he would no doubt go through the same process as I am. I think it would fall under being fair use "remixes".

Jedis
05-23-2015, 07:59 PM
You could always post your link on the Daybreak forums and ask the question to get an official response. Honestly though, I'm not sure if there's much of a difference between making them available to play and/or download. They'd probably be viewed the same.

Anyone elses Titanium (bay of pirate version) missing almost all the classic zone music files? I have Nek Forest music play and thats almost it. I checked EQ folder and there's only a few classic mp3's and the rest are later expansions.

Do you have Environmental Sounds option turned on? I think that has something to do with it. Also, P99 uses mostly old zone music, which is in the form of XMI files. The XMI files basically trigger the MIDI tables that play through the MIDI soundbank on your soundcard... which in most cases sounds a bit lacking (hence the purpose of this project).

OH! Also! Felwithe music! That is awesome too!

Do you do anything post Velious? :D

I know PoP used some real instruments, but some of those songs were very cool as well, and may be fun for you to do!

ALSO! I've been kind of honing and working on my mixing skills and was wondering if I might be able to use the files you have as practice for mixing by chance? :D If so, lemme know! Can PM me if you'd like.

Sorry man, keeping this shit classic! I would love to do the Kunark & Velious music, but unfortunately, Kunark is almost devoid of music, and Velious too, to a lesser extent. Working on the Felwithe theme as we speak. I will send you a PM about the files.

(West) Freeport and Desert of Ro themes has been added! Edited the title of the Freeport Docks theme. Also, if you listen with headphones on the Ro theme, i added in a quiet wind blowing in the desert for atmosphere and immersion. I also made a Ro theme without the wind blowing that i can reupload in its place in case of a public outcry for that shit not being classic.

After talking to some people on the EQEmu forums, I think I may have found a way to implement the new themes in game. I'm going to be modifying some files and doing some tests, so stay tuned for that.

Grimluck
06-01-2015, 09:05 PM
IT WORKS! I got the Kelethin theme to play within 500 yards of the city, however there is more testing that needs to be done. There's an issue with the music cutting off abruptly, and I'm exploring options of how to make the music fade in/out upon entering that specified coordinates. BUT, THE HARD PART IS OVER!!! I have a lot of work ahead of me. If anyone tech-savvy is interested in helping me implement this within all of the zones, it would save me months of work.

Grimluck

Testing in Greater Faydark is wrapping up. There's an issue with the new implementation of the music concerning the ambient nature sounds. Once I implement the new music to a zone, the ambient sounds (rain, forest wildlife, swamp wildlife, etc.) no longer play. However, the dev I'm working with has a lead on a fix. Will know more later tonight.

Also, implemented new music in Rivervale!

Grimluck
06-05-2015, 04:24 PM
We've made huge strides in figuring out what the parameters in the code do. So far, I have Greater Faydark completed with all of the themes in the right places within the zone, AS WELL as the necessary fade ins/outs of the themes. The dev I'm working with the finishing up converting the sound files in the .eff files to be used as .wav files so the .emt files will implement the environmental effects/ambient sounds within the zone. So, basically, we can have updated music WITHIN THE GAME with all of the environmental sounds in tact.

After speaking with him, his conversion of the files will keep all of the parameters in tact for triggering the files, so basically, all I have to do is finish remaking all of the themes within the .xmi files, and replace them with my files once he has converted the files. The time for making Everquest sound its absolute best is on our doorsteps!

Great stuff. Has anyone ever heard Jay Barbeau's "Classic Rock" version of the EQ theme?

It's pretty awesome. 80's guitar sound kicks in at the 2:40 mark:https://youtu.be/Mn8bgKhsPVk

This is a shot in the dark, but would love to see someone edit or recreate this theme with that 80's guitar style throughout the entire song.

Hey, bro! Thanks for showcasing my work. :)

Here's the deal: I haven't really got to work on it much because I've been on vacation from work for the last two weeks, so I've been a bit busy. But, I will be getting to the rest of the themes ASAP. The amount of work ahead of me is pretty intimidating. I have roughly 60 more themes to complete, which if I take a wild guess as to when I think I'll be finished, It would probably be about 2-4 months. Once the themes are complete, I have to work with the code to test the themes in game. This poses a problem because I don't have characters that are high enough level to be able to properly test the themes in certain zones. So, I really have no clue how long that will take. I'd rather not "release" this project until it's complete so everyone gets the entire package, and of course the GM's nod of approval. I can't get in contact with them so I can get editing privileges so I can update my first post, so I'm not sure what's going to happen there.

The dev I'm working with wrote a simple program to convert certain files into the files I need with all of the parameters in place so all I would have to do is put the appropriate file in the appropriate folder, alter its code to change the .xmi files triggered to trigger my .mp3 and log in and test it. I will test his software (to make sure it's everything I need) to convert those files and test a new zone as soon as I can. Maybe I'll work in Kaladim next since there are so many different themes within those zones.

I don't know how long it's going to take to complete the project, but it won't be too long. As I finish each theme, I will post them to soundcloud as usual. So, hopefully, it will keep people interested in the project while I finish up with the themes and prepare to test each zone to make sure it's as close to classic as possible.

By the Way, Mycah. I don't know if you're aware of this, but when I watch your previous streams on twitch, they mute sections of your audio because of copyright infringement (I'm guessing it's the background music in your stream.)

Grimluck

Also, I forgot to add:

There's an issue with the character selection theme music. There's a bug in the Titanium client that does not reproduce the character selection theme music. It appears that it was hardcoded that way. So, the only way I can fix it (on my end) is to hack the .exe file and actually change the source code to trigger my character selection mp3 file, but that is well beyond my knowledge of anything code-wise. However, Secrets has fixed this issue, and has submitted the code to the p99 devs needed for it to be possible on my end to have updated character selection theme. They are waiting to implement this fix in a future patch, but I have no idea of when/if it will be implemented, so cross your fingers.

Also, there's a similar issue with the merchant theme. My system I'm working with is concerned with single zone files that trigger my mp3's when in the correct vicinity of it's theme within a zone. Since merchants are NPC's, I can't modify the code to trigger the theme for merchants at this time. The dev nor I can find where the client triggers the merchant theme, so unless I can find another dev with knowledge of that (and how to implement it on my end), I fear that we won't be able to have updated merchant music, either. :(

I guess all I can do is hope for the best.

Would be awesome if the unknown theme could be restored to its original glory. Unfortunately the version embedded in the XMI files in EQ is an incomplete file. I once tried to get the completed file from Jay Barbeau himself but he said he didn't have access to the original hard drives anymore.

Sorry man, the theme I redid is about as close as you're going to get. That will take a lot more work than usual to 'restore' it than it would the other because I would have to transcribe it by hand. The fact that the theme isn't even used in-game gives me no incentive to try.

Do you have a musical background? You are pretty skilled at this.

I enjoy making noise and I've messed around with composition freeware before but I suck at actually composing music. You got me thinking that this type of thing might be a fun alternative. I have a way to quantify how successful I am because the music is already composed but I can still be a little creative.

What software do you use? What technique do you use for composing based on the original music?

Very nice work, thanks for sharing.
