View Full Version : how/why do you play everquest? Am I playing it right?

EQ is one of the hardest games to start from scratch. Getting to max level is an obvious first goal, did that. I don't think anyone can level a druid to 60 without starting a twink, did that.

My monk is now lvl55 and I am looking forward to grouping in sebelis with him the rest of the way. This first twink was fun because his weapons went wu's staffs, then a quivering staff, then jade mace / kd. Now he uses ac/sos. I have had a blast working on his epic up to this point. I have killed eejag with the help of my guild, and quested all my own ROTWF. Making this character my main until he is lvl60 seems like an obvious choice, I just have not been motivated to do it for some reason. I have not logged on this character in months.

So what have I been doing when I log on? Honestly, making money on my druid... but why? (Have a fungi already) I want to do the monk epic instead of buy it.

The most fun part of my eq expierence the last couple months has been playing untwinked characters with my rl friend. We are running cleric / mage so gear is not that important. We both have < 2k in gear, I would guess he has less than 1k in gear. Why is this so much fun? Is it because we hunt in super classic places? Permafrost, upper guk, oasis, najeena, Karanas etc? Or is it fun because I am not steamrolling content?

At this point I am considering making another twink and am starting to question why I play this game / how to get the most enjoyment out of it. Do I make another monk? Iksar this time, with fungi, epic, tstaff etc? Would be fun to truly rail content like I never got the chance to on my monk the first time. Or do I make a ranger and run around with a sword of Morin acting like one of those classic everquest snobs? Tough call.

I would say the company you play with is the best part of this game. I recently started a new character with my brother who is playing for the first time and we are having a blast. Him experiencing the content for the first time, and me reliving it.

I feel ya. I wish I had known about this server a while ago. I never got to really expierence classic. I was lvl25ish when kunark dropped on live. Maybe that is why I have been enjoying the classic low level stuff. Also, you are right about the company. Playing with real life friends is fun at any lvl.

I just don't have the motivation to try to take over the world in North this time around.

haha I literetly typed a thread like this, and deleted it cus I thought it sounded stupid.

I noticed that what I thought I loved about EQ was getting 1 character to 60, then wandering around killing random greens and doing quests.

But shortly after I get any character to 60.. I re-roll after doing some cool shit, and start again.

So I think I play to level characters.

I also really enjoy camping nameds solo.

But since I always want to get 60, then spend months camping namdes and then just roll a new character. Ive learned, that I think the reason I play eq is to level characters while I watch Sliders on Netflix.

Do you have to take over the world to enjoy the game?

Sometimes it's fun to just run around different newbie zones and help people out. And druids are amazing at that! It depends on what you like doing, but making someone else's day can be great.

Iruined, when you are leveling up new characters... are they super twinked and crushing content on their way to 60? Or are they under-equipped and struggling a little bit?

Donruss

I left that out, I spent a ton of time doing just that. Plvling g random people in unrest / crushbone. I have probably given away 30 green silken drapes and other newb gear that I have acquired.

You bring up a good point though. I have to bang out these trade skills in preparation for the shawl quests, I could do that and hand out the stuff I make. Could probably kill at least a weekend, maybe a week doing that.

depends, I wouldnt say super twinked.. right now my monk has a fungi a Wu's Quivering staff and 2 peices from Dalners, the arms and gloves. Hes got nothing else.

My last character had some pretty decent gear, but was missing a back slot face, and a couple others for, well hes 60 and still missing a back slot heh.

I get some clutch gear, that makes me stronger than EQ would prefer me to be.. but i dont look like im on fire and shit hehe

Altho I did make a rogue that looked pretty redonk with an epic at level 1 once.. but I only got him to 35 and stripped him haha

*edit* I should by no means make you think that im out there skipping around doing random old quests, and wearing bloodstone eyepatches on my shamans... I definitely am racing to 60 every time...

Interesting... fungi but wqs. I have a fungi as well but I have not played a twink with one yet.

I don't know, I feel like I would either go balls out on my next character or only spend 2k again like this one.

I love everquest, but as an adult, and a human being, and a gamer, I feel like its a better game with a fungi...

I also feel like its a better game with the XP bonus on red lol.

So i am the enemy :P

But the art is better than anything in the louvre.

But on red, where you just group and the XP flies, you can be naked to 60 and have the time of your life.

Sorry not trying to plug red, just talking about the variation of feels in this wild wild game..

I have no money and can't really twink past maybe 150pp (if that). Mostly I run around working on tradeskills or just have adventures with people I meet or on my own. Yesterday I ran my cleric across Antonica two and a half times, dodged that crazy sand giant in Oasis, beat up some orcs in HPH, and destroyed the frogloks' good opinion of me in Upper Guk while trying to collect some ground spawns. Trying to do the Armor of the Priest quest is hard on your own! I need to figure out how to get my enchanter alt to 34, or scrape up the cash to get someone else to enchant some platinum bars for me.

Racing to 60 just to be at 60 is kind of boring to me. I want to be high level because I can do more stuff (like...kill Ambassador DVinn on a whim, that bastard), but otherwise it doesn't matter to me. I've read guides suggesting I solo for 20 levels in Unrest. I don't want to be trapped in there for 20 levels by myself! Ugh! Have you seen that place? I bet it smells like old gym socks and roasted bug. (That's just my opinion.)

I'm here for the adventures, essentially. Not the ones defined by others, but the ones I can have spontaneously on my own.

plus bonus: the server ain't going anywhere. unlike in a commercial game, which is releasing content and pushing you along, you can take a break for a few months and just goof off, then come back, then take a break again, etc etc.

It's an underrated aspect of this server, that it is kind of "static". I think it makes it more of a sandbox that way. You can just take your time to do what you want. Stuff and people will still be here. It's like grandma's house, except grandma is permacamping the cookies.

an enchanter is such a good class for doing this stuff, you can get very good faction with nearly every quest giver and can solo almost anything, so you can really enjoy norrath with one.

I would be doing that right now if I didnt immediately roll a shaman, after finishing my enchanter. smh

My TWINK monk on LIVE had full set of silk armor and some 5/20 weapon with no stats. So, who is more uber in the game enjoyment department?

I am not sure that makes you the enemy. I am the OP so I will allow it =)

I dabbled on red trying to relieve the boredom. I played with the same rl friend and a different one. I got to lvl20 in an afternoon. The experience bonus is cool. However, without my rl friends playing, the task of starting over seems too daunting.

Ya, on live that would make you a twink in 99/2000ish

Kinda different here. You will literally be handed better if you tried that here

Side note...

here is a gif of OP helping me, after my first post on p99 forums to obtain a full set of level apropriate bronze armor, with my first character on the server.

One of my favorite nights of all time, and still my favorite armor class/set. Speaking of gear.

Having a few high level characters here, I'd say the fun is stopping along the way to do cool shit. Tradeskills, giving out items, buffing, porting, and quading once in a while :p.

I have given away quite a few items in the past ~3 years, hopefully those people also paid it forward.

If twinking your characters provides you with increased enjoyment, don't sweat it.

I have a dirty secret: during Live, my Chanter was *gasp* twinked. I was involved in a GM event in GFay during SoV period, and for my efforts was rewarded with a GBS!? I didn't realise the value at 4th level, after just starting EQ. In fact, my friend had provided me with 50pp head-start, and another player had given me a Dragoon Dirk.

By 10th level - and literally 2 weeks spent in EC Tunnel - I sold the GBS to HaloChanter for approx 9.5k plat. I remember spreading the love to a Druid to get a SOW just so that I could move (slowly) to FP bank! Thus, my Chanter was equipped with FBR, Loam gear, GEBs (I *loved* my GEBs), and other equipment. I did obtain the Stein of Moggok by myself before I sold the GBS.

I didn't twink my alts - Druid and Warrior - as both started from scratch. This time round, no handouts, no purchasing dropped loot (only player crafted), and am really enjoying the experience. I have short, medium and long-term goals to achieve, and with no further expansions beyond SoV, no need to be concerned with perceived race to level and/or game-play ruined by item inflation.

The only objection I have to twinking is that a minority use twinking as an excuse for poor play because they can rely on equipment, as opposed to learning a class. Also, it does harm new players who choose gear dependent classes. That said, there is no rush, and once Velious is released, there will be a lot more space to play in the Old World.

The great thing about EQ during this period, was that it still offered a multitude of different game-play experiences, rather than reducing it to level & raid.

When I played on live I was very hardcore, I was a post-grad student writing my thesis and had lots of time to burn, no wife, no kids, no commitments other than drinking nights with my friends. My guild was always on the cutting edge doing new content, wiping and getting first dibs on all kinds of new pixels.

I never made any alts and never wasted time in game, It was like a second job where I farmed spell reagents to help advance. I played 2 other games pretty hardcore until I figured out that what I loved the most was the challenge and the fear of deaths and deaths that came from learning new encounters or pitting myself against crazy pulls, named mobs, redcons etc.

I became an altoholic in LOTRO and SWTOR where I loved storylines but also learning how each class handled situations differently. What I missed was the fear of deaths and delays etc.

Where if I didn't do a good job, carefully plan or know my class all I would have is a repair bill and reappear in a cleared instance and could run back and start again real fast.

Since I came here two weeks ago I have been slowly leveling different toons and am hitting dungeons and other areas I don't remember or harder to level in, but the reward is the thrill of overcoming the risks , and beating mobs that are really hard and challenging. I forsee a very slow leveling progression but a fun time playing all the classes and experiencing all the dungeons as I go up.

This game is awesome because when you make a mistake it hurts, and you never make it again.

Other than manastone, prenerf fungi, lustrous russet, holgresh elder beads, and pre-kerafyrm sleepers gear there's no rush or time limit on doing anything pretty much.

Some of vulaks loot too.

People that think Velious will follow the exact timeline are sadly mistaken. I mean, didnt mosscovered twig JUST get removed from game, after 4+ years of kunark? Current blue isn't a race to follow the exact timeline, that will be for the next blue release once they perfect Velious

I can find enjoyment in about anything in this game. I love going around and buffing people on my druid/giving a helping hand. I enjoy helping people. When I get enough money for my cleric's epic I will travel around and rezz people. I have done high end raiding five nights a week back on EQLive. I liked the strategy and finally beating that boss and progressing with flags/loot, etc. But again I was known to mindlessly grind Nurga and Drooga for months to max ally with Chardok on two characters for no real reason. I loved gathering those Twilight Sea quest pieces that dropped in Luclin zones for those subpar armor quests. Not an upgrade but still fun to meet other people and trade pieces. Hell, I can have fun sitting around and fishing. You can never have enough tattered sandals.

Mostly my fun has been through the social aspect. I have had some really good times in game just doing goofy stuff with people. My second day on here I was dying laughing as my group was running helter skelter trying to survive from some menace. You could literally hear the Benny Hill music playing in your head. I haven't laughed like that in an MMO in a long time.

No real right way to play the game. Try everything, try something different...

Most of the people that I started out Leveling with here have far passed me because I am not about the Rush to 60. I take my Time and explore.

At 35 I've Quested all my own gear for the most part(Totemic set, Snare Neck, Mage Broom, ect). I Also don't like exping in the "regular" spots like Mistmoore and Unrest. I Prefer to go around and try different places. I've been in Paw and Perma recently. I'm also one of those people who will never MQ my epics. If you didn't do the work and get it yourself what is the point imo. Meanwhile one of my good friends has been rushing more then one char to 60 and has mq'd every epic he can.

There is no wrong way to play. Play the way that give you the most enjoyment. This is a game after all. It is to be fun not played like a job.

I do nothing but buff newbs and help people get crescent gear for their monks. It's perfect since I don't have time to do much else and there's almost always someone lookin' for the gear. It gives me just enough of my EQ fix.

I want to play the way that gives me the most enjoyment, but I am having trouble figurine out what that way is. I come up with all these great ideas about what I am going to do. They all sound great until I actually start doing them.

Sometimes this game is more fun to think / talk about than it actually is to play. Anyone else ever find that to be the case?

Player interaction, 100%. I loved that about EQ and I'm really glad to have it again, instead of instances, cross server queues, soulless LFR, or some other crap. On that note, anybody play 5-10pm PST want to group/duo on Red? I have characters 1-32, of every flavor except tank. Had like 6 people flake out on me.
