I was browsing the list of other servers, and I noticed some that had custom zones and even one that allowed GM commands. If I made my own server could I...


Move the wizard portal in West Karana closer to Qeynos Hills?


Make Brownie, Faerie, and Pixie playable races?


Add lower level versions of harvest for wizards?


Quests that allow fire pot travel?


Wizard group gates to Firepots?


Player Werewolfs and Vampires?


Player controlled boats in the ocean zones?


Meteors that drop out of the sky and blow up entire zones?

Trivial to add/change spells.



Move the wizard portal in West Karana closer to Qeynos Hills?



Changing the loc a port spells send people would be trivial, changing where the wizard spires themselves are would be a little more work but not too bad with the right tools. Would need to change clientside files for that though, and then you get to the questionable part -- distributing client files is technically a no-no but you could get away with it if you're a low-visibility (non-p99) server. Alternatively, you could pack your changes into some kind of patch that only modifies the files the player already has, but that's more work.



Quests that allow fire pot travel?



Sure why not.



Make Brownie, Faerie, and Pixie playable races?


Player Werewolfs and Vampires?



Tougher ones. I think Secrets might know something about getting more things to show up on the char creation screen somehow or another. Getting stuff like equipment to play along might take more work (Race: ALL is not as ALL as it might sound, from what I remember). If you're willing to put up with hacks (shows up visibily as a brownie or whatever in game and on char select, but is technically counted as some other race under the hood and at char creation) it might be easier to pull off.



Player controlled boats in the ocean zones?



Maybe. Boats are Mobs and can be moved around the same ways as NPCs and such, although the "moves players along with it" part can lead to some pretty glitchy movement. Finding an intuitive and workable way for players to control them might be more challenging.



Meteors that drop out of the sky and blow up entire zones?



If by "meteors" you mean "zonewide flavor text followed by instant death"...

My custom server would have an Orc City dungion.. off of Oasis of Mar.. level 45+ accessable via the GIANT opening in that zone known as the Orc Highway.

*edit* wait under the orc city would be a crazy orc dungion with a layout like guk, but full of merbs that were 65+

It would have a 45+ Outdoor zone off of Jagged Pine Forest.. full of elusive forest elves.

hmm idk what else.. runny eye would get an item loot revamp.

I'd throw in zones that were left off from the original Antonica map, like Unkempt Woods, The Dead Hills and The Deep. Just to name a few.

MeatQuest server

PvP Teams server, teams based on race

Racial meat drops from players killed in PvP death only (taken off loot tables of regular mobs)

Meats can be used to cook or taunt the other teams, as well as fulfill bounties or team/guild quotas

PROS
Potential for Black Market of racial meats
Meat jokes
Clever meat related guild names
Endless fun!

There are already player controllable boats in zones like DC and LR. You stand in the little canoe and click on it and then you can drive it around. Might not work on P99.

If you wanted to change anything significant you'd need some C++ to edit the server source. For minor things ("quest scripts") Perl or Lua would be enough. Some basic working knowledge of SQL queries would help if you were doing things like repopulating zones, making custom items and spells, etc.

That's true, I forgot about the canoe. Bit dinky for ocean warfare, though. Could also turn players into big sailing ships and let them move around as normal, although glitchy movement would be pretty much guaranteed there.

Edit: and zonewide death mechanics are something with an existing precedent from live; The Deep on Luclin, Citadel of Anguish from oow and IIRC one of the Gates of Discord zones also had something (I'm not sure if it was as deadly as suffocation/instagib though).

Try it! You can download a server repack that gives you everything you need to install the server at:

Installing from source is also possible but requires you understand the tools and technology, easier in Windows than in LINUX but of course LINUX is the lightest weight server (which was a concern for me since my server runs on Amazon ECS so lighter=cheaper!)

MOST people modify the database and quest scripts (requires PERL/LUA and SQL knowledge), some people modify the server code (C++/SQL), few people use Detours to modify client behaviour and detect cheating (Visual C++, DLLs), and almost nobody (?) actually creates completely custom zones AFAIK.

If your zone has objects hard coded (i.e. wizard portals) then you would have to change the zone files and distribute them. Some things (like wayfarer's camps, Froglok home in RM, LDON portals) are doors and objects so easy to change right in the database and doesn't require any file distribution. Messing with spells requires you send out a new spells_us.txt but thats pretty easy.

Give it a shot, makes you appreciate Nilbog and the staff much much more when you see the stock PEQ database.

hmm curious, I don't remember these - where are they located? Approximate coordinates?

the oasis one is somewhere near orc highway on the West side of the zone. The one in south karana is on the east side of the zone.

They are sandy areas which look like you can keep running into but invisible walls stop you.

I'll have to visit the South Karana one that you mention I've never noticed it. I bet you're right I bet they were going to link them but didn't because it made cross continental travel to easy. That sounds exactly like the type of thing that would result in that gigantic opening in oasis just doing nothing. It's so clearly is one, following the traditional visual language.

Well on my server throw a 45+ zone there to make cross continental travel difficult again for vanilla EQ!

On live one of the expansions had a monster mission where the entire group became fairies and had to get up to some fairy naughty mischief in nek forest!

Make the orcs playable while you're at it.

My old Trilogy map names "The Lifire River, Serpent's Spine and The Serpent" as places between Oasis of Marr and Plains of Karana.

Yes, you use the #racechange (number) command with whatever # of the race you wish to have it affect....issue being the gear will not be enabled unless you alter specific gear to be all/all as well.

Keep us updated. Just make sure you don't implement those kinds of things unless it's clear and not hacky, if you want people to join the server. I always thought Sarnak playable race would be awesome. Maybe they'd start out in Chardok; rename the mobs to have names just like all other NPC's maybe even make all cities raidable with epic loot... just brainstorming here.
