View Full Version : Spell-casting Roleplaying Titles

So I was looking over the Classic/Kunark/Velious spell lists, and I was thinking that a great way for spell casting classes to refer to themselves in roleplaying terms is based on spells (EDIT: Please note, the titles would not be the spells, but rather, they would be based on the spells) they have (rather than, say, Druid of the 37th Circle, they'd be Druid of the Wolves). I think I have the Druids, Clerics and Mages figured out. Here are the titles for Druids up to level 50:

1: Druid of the Wood
5: Druid of Harmony
9: Druid of the Trees
14: Druid of the Rock
19: Druid of the Rings
24: Druid of Steel
29: Druid of the Circles
34: Druid of the Wolves
39: Druid of Diamond
44: Druid of the Wild
49: Druid of Nature
50: Master Druid

Cleric:
1: Apprentice Cleric
5: Cleric of Light Healing
9: Centered Cleric
14: Cleric of Healing
19: Daring Cleric
24: Cleric of Bravery
29: Cleric of Wrath
34: Valorous Cleric
39: Cleric of Restoration (signifying Complete Healing)
44: Resolute Cleric
49: Divine Cleric
50: Master Cleric

Mages would start out as "Apprentice Mage," then go with Elementalkin (or Mage of Elementalkins) and so on up to level 50, where they'd attain the title of Master Mage.

For example:
Marlon, Druid of Harmony (and I'm going to roleplay him, darnit!)

If anyone has any suggestions about this list or other classes, I'd be happy to hear it. I'm also curious as to how this might work with pure melees and past level 50 (maybe base it on the levels where classes receive class defining spells, or perhaps a new title for every level).

I've never understood how people could roleplay in a game devoted obsessively to robbery and genocide.

People would sometimes refer to themselves in signatures and whatnot as, say, "Druid of the 37th Circle." This is an alternate way that manages to fit in game mechanics (IE level and spellcasting) with roleplaying a little better (since levels don't really make much sense from a roleplaying standpoint, but spells that you can cast or abilities that you have do). For Bards, I am thinking maybe something along the lines of:

1: Apprentice Bard
5: Bard of the Drums
8: Bard of the Strings
11: Bard of the Brass
14: Bard of the Wind
17: Battle Bard (denotes dual wield)
20: Bard of Many Songs (two songs in one level)
25: Bard of the Shadows (Hiding)
31: Soaring Bard
35: Bard of Tracking
39: Bard of Bewitching
44: Bard of the Mind (Cassindra's)
49: Bard of Shielding
50: Master Bard

Well, then I will be the first. I have a friend (possibly two) coming in that will be the second (and maybe third).

I've found that, when you interact in a roleplaying manner with others, they will respond in kind.

So, to get more people roleplaying on this server: Roleplay more.

I've never understood what was non-RP about the word level.

Nobody calls a high school student meta if he mention he is a 10th grader, or a martial artist is a 3rd rank black belt. Level is no more or less an RPish word than rank, circle, or grade. They are all synonymous .

I've never understood what was non-RP about the word level.

Nobody calls a high school student meta if he mention he is a 10th grader, or a martial artist is a 3rd rank black belt. Level is no more or less an RPish word than rank, circle, or grade. They are all synonymous .

Rank, circle, etc, seem to function more along the lines of what spells you can cast (or abilities you have) than what your level is in-game.

For example, there aren't 50 ranks in Karate (or other martial arts that use the belting system). You don't get a rank whenever you gain some ability. Ranks are used to determine roughly how much ability you have (or, in the colored belts, what you have learned). A second degree black belt might be able to beat another one consistently because he's got more skill than him, but not enough to be a third degree. Whereas one would be level 24, the other would be level 23 or 22.

An example would, of course, be a Druid. On Live these days, spellcasters get spells every level. That wasn't so back in Classic-Velious (I don't recall when it was that it was changed, but I'm quite sure it was after OoW). Why is it that a level 14 Druid can cast Spirit of Wolf but a level 13 can't at all? Why doesn't a level 15 Druid get more spells than a level 14 Druid? Because, in the eyes of their guildmasters, their ranks are the same, the level 15 Druid has just been in that rank longer.

Edit: I'd also like to point out that a lot of people seem to misunderstanding this idea. Notice that I didn't say "Druid of Greater Wolf Form," I said "Druid of the Woods." I didn't say "Druid of Skin Like Steel," I said "Druid of Steel." The ranking isn't the spells themselves, but based ON the spells for easier understanding.
