View Full Version : The death penalty

No, it's not a thread about sending Fourthmeal to the chair :-)
Just an idle musing, how is the XP loss on death calculated? Is it a fixed amount for the level, or is it more based on "the equivalent of x white con mobs". I was wondering whether (for example) two level 30s, one a troll SK, the other an assling warrior, both eat a death, would the troll SK still have to kill more level con mobs to make up the loss in comparison?
I don't intend this to degenerate into another OMGWTFLOL right or wrong discussion regarding penalties, just more interested in the maths behind xp loss upon death.

The penalty for death is the same, but the SK would have to kill more due to hybrid xp penalty.

If its a flat amount lost then the hybrid would have to kill the same number of mobs to gain the lost exp back.
If its a percentage loss the hybrid gets hurt worse.
The hybrid penalty does not make each mob worth X% less, it makes the amount of exp required to level X% more
so if a class/race with a 0% penalty took 100 exp to level, A wood elf ranger would take 140 exp to level.

I'm pretty sure it's percentage based, meaning you're not penalized or benefiting when dying as a certain class vs others, but you're just dealing with the typical xp percentage amount lost per death...I only have anecdotal evidence toward my position, though.

I don't follow.
If a Hybrid loses X% xp per death, he merely has to gain X% xp back.
If a non-hybrid loses Y% xp per death, he merely has to gain Y% xp back.
X% xp is the same number of kills to him as it was to obtain. Hybrids receive no penalty above and beyond their innate penalty.
Even a flat exp amount lost the hybrid wouldn't be hurt worse, either, since as you pointed out, mobs are worth the same, but the xp bar is bigger comparatively. The loss would just look like more to non-hybrids.

The amount you lose is a percentage based on the amount it took to gain the previous level. This is why dying in the level after a hell level sucks so bad.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the loss is 10% of the experience needed to earn your previous level.

Frequently, especially when soloing, I have found myself thinking of a chart similar to this, that I saw years ago. I always say to myself, " I'll search for it when I log," and end up forgetting.
So... many thanks for posting that link :)
A percentage does make death worse for hybrids. If it takes 100 kills to level a war, it takes 140 for a ranger. Dying being 10% means the hybrid takes longer to recover from his death penalty (just like it takes him longer to get that 10% in the first place)...

What do you make of this:
I was running in Kithicor during the day, following the wall from WC to HHP. I was alt+tabbed, and must have missed the HHP zone. I continued on into the named orcs, where I orcs, where I became heavily DoT'd before making it all the way back ground to WC zone with 11% HP. When I finished zoning I had like 7% HP, and ended up dieing.
As far as I could tell, I lost no XP.

Either (1) you remembered the amount of XP you had before dying incorrectly,
or (2) you made this up to have something to type, or (3) your character was below the level at which XP penalties apply.

I hate to be a debbie downer but when a ranger kills 140 mobs the war only has to kill 92 =D It takes a brave soul to play a ranger on this server.

If a dot kills you after you zone you die, but lose no exp.

Yet you DO lose exp if you do not zone first?
Interesting, I didn't know this. I assume it's classic?

Definitely true. Gate before you die from a dot = no exp loss.
