Vanilla EQ items you thought were sweet

So the first time thread was fun, and it made me want to start another thread. We all know now what items are uber and what are trash, but back in the day some seriously noob gear seemed SUPER baller.

Lets have some fun reminiscing :)


1. Lockjaw vest, and glowing wooden crook. I hunted lots in oasis vanilla EQ, and if you somehow were in a group that managed to kill mother fucking LOCKJAW, and got the glowing wooden crook, or the lockjaw vest, that was some serious bragging rights.

2. Greater lightstones, this was such an important item, and a hot commodity back in the day

3. Giant snake fangs

4. Chitin shield from upper guk, if you walked around with a chitin shield, you were the shit!

5. Discovering that you needed magic weapons to hit undead, and mesh gloves from guk, and boots, were big time for monks and warriors to kick back in the day.




those are the main ones, when vazaelle came out I made an ogre shaman, and grinded sisters on sister isle in oot for hours and hours and hours, and I was one of the first people with enough plat to buy a full set of small, shiney as hell, platemail for my reroll woodelf warrior lol. Her name was bled alcohomaholic, got her to like level 44 or something.

I spent some good time trying to get a complete set of mesh for my first character, a necro. The Gossomer robe was like the most powerful item for so many weeks after launch, I miss the era where anything not leather or rusty was as good as it got.

Envy and Woe. I feel like these were considered uber twink gear back in the day, at least on Drinal. I was so confused when I never saw anyone wielding this pair of sexy on P99, until I googled the stats and realized just how few of us had any idea what the hell we were doing in this game back then.

Screaming Mace - A proc, on a weapon!!! So awesome

Skull of Jentra - Mana offhand, hellll ya.

Rusty Halberd - I distinctly recall leveling my paladin with one of these because it allowed me to hit for 20, never mind I would swing every 5 seconds, I HIT FOR 20!

Gossamer Robe , Bone Bladed Claymore , Thulian Claws - and of course any piece of rubicite - especially arms because nobody had those

Short Sword of Ykesha was hot as fire back in the day (pre Kunark)...I even traded a manastone for one back in 1999 (before the stones got removed).

Rubicite Breastplate was another top favorite. I camped it for 19 non-stop straight hours to get mine. What's cool was I was the last person on our server to get it to drop...this was the weekend before it got removed. 19 non-stop hours at AoF, haha. I saw a total of 10-15 people come and go in my group. Ended up in a full Fires of Heaven group (played on Veeshan), they let me have the drop.

I was so proud of my bard (first main) with his brazen brass kilij (http://wiki.project1999.com/Brazen_Brass_Kilij) - level 1s would probably throw it back at you on blue here.

Also Blued Two Handed Hammer and Mortificator Staff were basically the legendary epics as a Shaman ... this was before PoFear came out.

Mino axe on my ranger pretty early on. Was a game changer.

I also recall making a trip from the Butcherblock area to the swamps for some magic gloves (netted?) for a monk friend so we could kill wisps for the big money. That first run though the Oasis was scary as hell.

Also remember hitting "combine" on a fletching kit full of Fine Steel weapons. Seemed incredibly costly at the time and was a big setback in getting into "full banded".

flowing black robe, basically the first robe i remember really seeing that wasnt a drab single color that looked like starter robes.. god forbid you have that sweetness oracle robe. Tome with silver runes too, just somethign about the book graphic

I used to sell those in Greater Faydark here for 5-8pp when I first started on P99...great axes to have. Doubt they're still used.

Fine plate...oh yeah. Used to have some pieces dyed a nice pale green on my cleric.

Of course, I've refused to spend my paltry savings in EC and at level 35 I don't get handouts (not that I ever did), so I still think FP is pretty good and twinking involves ornate ringmail I've made myself. I just upgraded my studded shoulderpads to a prayer cloth of Tunare! :)

Ghoul Bane was the coolest weapon ever when I first started playing EQ. It was the reason I rolled pally haha

I remember bargaining for a Stein of Moggok because holy crap that's 10 int.

I remember the first time I saw a necro in a Blighted Robe. From that day I burned with a fiery passion for Fear raids until I finally got one months later. The other necros in my guild were pissed that I won the roll. Like not talking to me pissed.

Ogre War Maul. Bought one on my "battle" cleric and proceeded to facetank and die to many a WC kodiak. Def remember thinking this random full bronze warrior I saw wielding a langseax of wolves was sweet. Those damage delay ratios.

Obsidian scimitar on my humane druid .... Because Dammi to hell i am a druid and druid wield scimitars!.

I don't remember how plat i paid, but i loved the damage and agile because someone told me agility mattered to a druids tanking. why i had a full suit of rienforced leather armor i made myself 8)

On my first character, a wizard, a GM gave me a pair of GEBs in a south karana undead event. I just got my new purple and green gem spells so I was running aoeing everything during the event. All of my friends were super jealous of my golden boots.

i used to be in awe of the mysterious gods that used to camp dvinn's room when i was just a scrubber outside the castle. all i could see up there were cool spell graphics and tough mobs dying.

one was my first EQ goals was to be in a group that camped dvinn, and look down at lowbies through that tower window.

Mino axe is as good as it gets on a fresh server since it's attainable at such a low level. It's better than the fine steel equivalents, which drop off much higher level mobs.

The low-level economy is boned on this server. It's geared toward people who are nurturing their fifth alt with thousands of plat. Mino axe will have its day in the sun again on Recycle 99.

Skull-Shaped Barbute because my dad won one in a Ebay auction just for me, haha and an Executioners Axe. I would typically replace any weapon i had for an axe with the decal of the ones the Dwarf Guards use in Kaladim.
