Hi all,
I'm considering giving P99 another shot.
At the same time, I found it difficult when starting out... I died almost instantly, and moving around the map was very difficult. Additionally, I didn't really find anyone who was too keen on helping me out.
Can someone share their thoughts?
I just want to make sure that I understand everything before reinstalling EQ, I really like the social aspect and group play, but everything seemed frustrating.

You have to breakdown the phase of "Starting Out."
You have "Starting Out" as a brand-new-spanking-Newbie who doesn't have a pot to piss in or you have "Starting Out" who is an Alt-Of-Level-50-Or-Higher-Player and is beyond twinked at level 1.
You sound like the first choice so I suggest just staying in the newbie zone around your starting area until you learn more about the area. Kill everything that moves, within reason and loot, sell and save to make money.
Just about everyone gets lost and dies within the first hour of their first attempt at EQ classic. It's a rough learning curve and there are a lot of things to find frustrating just because it's not very easy. The newbie zones (areas with things like bats, fire beetles, decaying skeletons, etc) and your starting city are usually pretty safe to learn how to play in.
You will find the helpful people if you're patient, just like with everything else on this game.

Starting out can be one of the most difficult times in EQ, but it can be the most rewarding too. Some of my best memories of EQ are just trying to survive, and finding a decent place to get xp, and making new friends. It's these frustrations and difficulties that force this game to be a very social and group focused game. Don't give up, if you get past the beginning frustrations, you will cherish those memories later.

Try to target decaying skeletons as much as possible. A stack (20) bone chips can can earn you up to 10 pp per stack by selling them to other players (do not vendor these).

Accept that you're going to die... A LOT. Every mistake is a lesson.
Accept that you will get lost... A LOT. Every mistake is a lesson.
Don't expect immediate gratification.
Aim for a slow burn with a lot of work input.
Stop. Smell the flowers. If it's been a week and you're not even level 10 yet, consider it a win.
I've generally seen people being very helpful.

Getting the files installed is the hardest part.
After that it's simply a case of logging on, creating a character and finding exciting ways to die and lose your things!

Starting in P99 without any type of gear to get started is very difficult. This is why the game is so keen on grouping. You will see folks that twink out their new characters with some awesome equipment and that don't want anything to do with people who aren't geared or remotely geared to the level that they are. But you will also come across folks that are willing to help you along the way, whether it be through buffing or even shelling out 1-50pp to help with your cause. Its all really in how you fit in the community

Check the wiki and read the write ups in the guide section if you haven't already done so. Don't be afraid to rely on maps. ZEM is your friend.

IF you think playing on here with limited knowledge is going to BE easy, well you might as well play WoW if that is your mindset.:D
This server is Hard Mode. But that is the draw to have people come and stay here. Anyone can play a easy game, where they give you everything, just because you are playing it. You Have to earn it on here. And when you do, you smile that you did it, not the game giving it to you because you reached another level like WoW does.
I am not trying to run you off. I am asking you to give it a chance, and experience YOU making it happen, not some silly reward system designed for a 11 year old person. :p
Nothing is easy if you don't really know how to do what you are doing. Give it time and learn. That is the challenge on here is that it IS a challenge. :)

This game isn't for the weak hearted. This game is VERY challenging and death IS on the door step. There is reward to it though.

I used to be level 47. Fast forward approximately 1 year later, I'm knocking on the doorstep of 45 again.
But do I keep logging in?
Yes. Yes I do.

I started out on P99 in early 2013 and I made a wood elf druid. I didn't make a druid because people on the forums say its a great starting out class (which it is) it was because I loved sow and the ability to port. I was at an advantage because I had played EQ for so long before this. Even with that it took me a while to level him up and only ever got him to lvl 21 then switched to a monk that i later got to 53.
Playing a monk as your first (ish) character is not easy because of the weight penalty, but I was lucky in that I met a few people in-game that quickly became my static group and we had a main looter and money/loot was split at the end of every exp session. Point being is that you need to play with others in this game to do well.
If you find friends/a guild that you like this game not only becomes easier but it opens up just about everything and makes it WAY more fun.
Try again, this game is hard.

My first day on this server, my little level 4 Dark Elf Magician had managed to collect about 3 stacks of bone chips. Enough to make the perilous journey to the EC tunnel to sell them worth the risk. I sat there for three hours auctioning my paltry three stacks of bone chips with no takers.
Finally in frustration, I begged,"someone Please buy my bone chips so this poor level four mage can buy his new spells!" Instantly someone sent me a tell and said to meet him at the tunnel entrance. It was a Druid, who had absolutely no need for bone chips. He asked if this was my "main". I said yes. He handed me 50pp and said keep the chips. Then he said, "Wait here."
A few minutes later, he came back and gave me a full set of Raw Silk armor that was better than the cloth I was wearing.
Sadly I don't even remember his name. I was just so shocked at his generosity.
Moral: when asked if this is your Main, say yes! Good things will most likely follow.

Just a little. I found my old account luckily, but came back 3 months ago and rerolled. Got a char up to lvl 20, the first week, was on a weekend, lvl 1 to 5 is a grind, can take up to maybe 5 hours or more on your own. So by your self it's tough.
I lvld out 1 to 3 myself, did'nt take long. Then ran to orc hill and lvld 3 to 6 quick, I just stuck to groups. 2nd night, I found group after group, and got to 11 quick, although I was playing 5 to 8 hour playing shifts. In the two days. By day 3 played a little and got to 11 and then ran to kurns. I was given a few peices of gear, I saw high lvl peeps killing guards, so I looted fine steel, so plat for spells came by easy. Kurns helped me lvl to 18 quick, also my char is a cleric.
Make a char that appeals to you, log on, and play. First 10 lvls, just play, find groups, find the good people to group with. Some may give gear, some may not. But after the first 10 lvls you should know the class, and look up on p99 wiki where to go, or ask on here. There is plenty to do to lvl and gear up. it takes you, have fun and adventure along the way.

Someone once said, "You can learn everything you need to know about how to play EQ at Orc1 in East Commonlands."
I have yet to see anyone disprove this.
