View Full Version : The Event is too laggy for some of us

it is cool to see the whole server in 1 zone.....
400 player in EC is cool.....
but if get to some point, everything is frozen and people can't move....are we going too far and missed the point?
it is simple too laggy for people who doesn't live next to the server ( or US )....
for some people like me, we don't even have a chance to log back in =(
may be we should split the event in multiple zone so it won't have connection problem?

They did do halloween events and such but they didn't give out as nice of rewards. Really nice of them to bring Lustrous Russet back though.

They did events, some spanning across different zones. Regardless, it's great of them to put their time and effort into it.
For those of us that lagged, crashed, weren't here, whatever... Would someone describe the event? All I could tell was cryosilk and lustrous russet armor dropping from some sort of werewolves...

Oh, pretty much everything that was dropped was in classic as well, but IIRC the events spanned over several days, the mobs were less common, and the rewards were MUCH less common!
NO TRADE rubicite armor, NO TRADE manastones, LR, Cryosilk (including robe) as well as class-specific stuff was all awarded.

Don't take this as being ungrateful, but the event was basically a bunch of GUILDS running around the zone killing stuff that mobs of low level players looted before anyone in their own group had a chance to give it to somebody who could use it! haha!
^^
Edit: don't take that the wrong way, please. I loved the event, just wish it lasted longer and perhaps was spread over a couple zones so I could have experienced more than 1/2 of it, including the finale.

Aside from all the random people trying to grab corpses from groups, zones crashing, and 400ping...it was fun. Grats alts with LR
The event should have been spread across 2-3 zones to save the lag and bullshit.

Thanks for the event =(
the event is good....but the idea of having the event in 1 zone is not as good....
but ya...the whole event for me is lag , ld , and relogin.....
i was the first 30 people in wc....and wait...until wc player count hit like 250.... i the ping begin to jump from 300 to 3000 and begin the LD/Login loop....
but ya... i tried my best to attend the raid....

nice job pumping about 20 sets of lustrous into the server gms, that was a great decision

More pieces got out than we had planned, yes (it was script based). However, with 350 people at the event, it's not like we fully decked out 20 people in lustrous. I'm not too worried with kunark around the corner either.
Rogean
11-01-2010, 02:54 AM
As for the lag; The event was meant to be a stress test. We wanted to see how we could do with a lot of changes recently. 350+ People in one zone is pretty nuts for an emulator (I don't think any other servers could even do over 100).

4-5+ months is hardly around the corner, but eh
its not even about the stats of the item, its the fact that is was meant to be an item that you only could have gotten back in the day, a sign of how long youve been with the server
now you just loot pinata'd it out to everyone online that has a melee char near EC
I wouldnt really care at all if it had been other planar drops or items that currently drop on the server, but lustrous and cryo robes?
oh well.

Nice troll attempt, but I wont be instigated into flaming you so you can get another ban under your belt and feel smug and superior some more.
I have always been in favor of the server and recreating a classic experience, I just disagree with some decisions made along the way. Oops is this the part where you lock the thread because I mentioned a gm decision?

Wow.. I agreed with your sentiment.. Right up to the point where you demonstrated that same "I must be first, and everyone else must know it" shit attitude. If your enjoyment of this game is really defined by being the first to get a later unattainable item simply to lord it over others until they quit.. Then there are really only three suggestions I have for you:
(1) Find a newer game to be first/best at. I don't know, maybe one not 11 years old and emulated for the sake of nostalgia and second chances?
(2) Play on a PVP server where being an overly competitive douche is not only expected but mitigated.
(3) Grow up. Items wont earn you respect if you don't play respectably.

So because I disagree with a set of items that was meant to only drop for a short period of time at the beginning of the server suddenly being given out en masse to anybody able to /loot a corpse in EC (including characters not even high enough to zone into fear) it makes me an overly competitive and elitist douche who doesn't play respectably? How does that make any sense?

I wasn't at the event, but that sounds like BS. People shouldn't be able to get Cryo Robes and shit anymore.
I for one thought it was kinda unique that almost all the cryo robes were gone with bans. It's unique that my rogue has Lustrous Sleeves and Bracers. I worked hard for that, and feel like I should be able to be rewarded for my time spent aquiring those items, because, lets be honest, a big part of the game is "how much better geared am I than you?" and looking up at the raiders in their pretty planar armor/weapons.
Sounds kind of stupid to ruin the work we put in when that gear was available, now doesn't it? I'm with Pheer on this one (holy shit, we agree.) and I think Items like that should be reserved for the people who put in the time originally and at the first event or two, not scattered around at any old event.

2nd post, really fast - I'm sorry that there are so many of you that are probably happy it got brought back for an event, but your probably not some of the elite, and probably wouldn't have gotten the items when they were available (generalizing here, apologize if I nick some of you the wrong way)
Now think about it this way. If you had put in the time to make yourself the best you could be, whats the point when everyone can be the same as you? Sounds wow'ish, doesn't it? and isn't WoW syndrome the reason a lot of us are back here?
If anyone ever got another Oaken Scimmy, I wouldn't be too happy, personally. But you, know, it's whatever. I'll be around here forever, and I support the GM's, just not some of the decisions they have made. Long live p99, by the way.

Yeah I'm a bit pissed off myself. I'm a ranger from a raiding guild on this server, it was not easy at all to get my planar armor. And now some lvl 10 ranger could have LR armor? That's a bit too much. It's way better than my planar armor, still better than Kunark armor, most pieces are better than thurgadin armor, and some pieces are still better than kael/skyshrine armor (not joking there).
Now if there was only a few pieces that dropped, or if it was the result of a quest, some roleplaying, or whatever... but just mobs spawning in EC? I don't know how many pieces dropped but it seems like there were not rare at all?
I't s not a big deal and it won't ruin my fun, I'm just a bit pissed off.

I support the GM's on this server and most everything they do. However, I am with Pheer on this, I do not have any LR and was not on for the event. However I can see why people are upset after playing countless hours to attain gear than watching people who have not dedicated any time picking up the same armor. I think it may water down what feel what some people were going for here. I think most people did not expect to watch the planar gear they have being crapped on by a Halloween evening loot pinata.

First 4 mobs I killed dropped: LR Gaunts, LR Gaunts, LR Gaunts, LR Bracer....then some boots and helms too within a few more mobs. Each mob also dropped a piece of Cryosilk as well.

Sorry if the event made your e-penis just a tiny bit smaller.
*shrug* People play this game for different reasons, which I'm sure many of you can attribute to.
Maybe it's slaughtering the rat population in Qeynos to save the city from the rat-lord, or maybe it's to do Tunare's wishes. Maybe your some insane, yet super smooth rogue who just likes to train people and scream "ANARCHY! DOWN WITH THE SYSTEM!" while you do it, just for the screenshots and the lulz.
Or, maybe your a raider who does it for fun, or better yet, to be the best you can possibly be. A lot of people want to be the top in their class here and now, because they couldn't do it in 1999. I know I couldn't, and although I'm not playing atm, I'm proud of my gear and the effort i've put into leveling/gearing Tal to be the best he can be.
The point is this: It's sad to see the best items on the server being somewhat trivialized by an event intended for newbs. Hand out some FBSS's, or some early Kunark drops or something. Not something that can potentially last you till Velious, even in that raiding guild.
First 4 mobs I killed dropped: LR Gaunts, LR Gaunts, LR Gaunts, LR Bracer....then some boots and helms too within a few more mobs.
And this is the problem.

You know this has nothing to do with your opinion and everything to do with your attitude and motives. You know you came to this thread to shit on this GM event because other people had fun at the expense of your unobtainable item exclusivity. You can say that it was the drop rate, the lack of challenge, the lack of a level cap (which is just plain BS.. Classic planes had no level requirement), or anything really. It just doesn't change the tone of your post and the greater point that you are getting at which is "You guys screwed us first-ers by making rust/cryo robe drop again." It's all about the need to lord over others the fact that you were the first/only person to get something. If it wasn't you would be satisfied with the sense of accomplishment you got from doing the hard work.. which you obviously aren't.
I also personally trust Rogean's judgment on the impact of the bugged drop rate over you hyperbolic "being given out en masse to anybody able to /loot a corpse in EC" description. I know you don't like/trust most of the dev's here, but TBH that isn't my problem.

I always get this feeling that somehow when people start whining and complaining on here that GM's are gonna just take down the server and say screw you... please don't do that by the way!! Project 1999 owns all. I think the majority of people on this server would agree with me there.
On a related note, this is an emulated server and we should be doing nothing but thanking and praising the GM's for hosting any event at all. I was impressed to see the guards in some cities were now zombies, and the wolves had red eyes. That is more than I had first expected when joining an emulator, and to me felt really professional. I also enjoy the GM's zone stress tests and I'm glad to help out, even if I lag out. Helps them see how the server is holding up with changes.
Frankly (I wasn't on for the Halloween's event btw, so I got nothing) if you want to whine that someone got a rare item that no longer drops, and it makes you feel less awesome because your virtual item is somehow less cool, the server would be better without you. This place is about nostalgia and the pleasure of re-joining a world we thought lost, not about your personal measurements.
The GM's here are feeling the pains that GM's of other games feel because the community is getting larger and unfortunately that invites some idiots in. The rest of us should actively try to counter the idiocy, and show the GM's our deep support.

A few things to note:
The event wasn't planned. It wasn't decided to do an event until maybe an hour or two before it actually happened. At that point, we had to generate a few NPC Types and I had to write a few scripts to control it all. A range of items was generated as well as borrowed from the last gnoll event (Lustrous, etc).
The scripts were written to replace normal npc's in the zone with werewolves, and then another script was written to add loot. Had I known how many mobs it would affect we would have put more limitations on the script.
A few dozen players getting one or two pieces of lustrous isn't going to kill the game.
There were no cryosilk robes given out.
I tried to do something nice for the server on short notice, unplanned. We learn from running these events to make sure the next one goes better. Yes, more loot was given out than we intended, and it won't happen again, but it's not like at this point we're going to go back and remove all the pieces that were looted.

I was not at the event because I have to wake up a 4:30am for work and I live on the East Coast. It sucks for me to not have had a chance to be there, but you know what? It really doesnt matter! Guess the WoW mindset came to this server. OMG I GOT MINE TEH HARDZ WAY AND NOW YOU ARE GIVING IT AWAY...
If someone else having the same loot as you, regardless of how they got it annoys you, pisses you off, or in any way detracts from your enjoyment of the game you have issues...

OMG...he... has the same pixels as me... this is blasphemy!!!!
not exactly, LR has better stats on some pieces than any item that will ever be on this server. Also, this "pixel" arguement is completely unintelligible given everything you do in game results in a minor "pixel" adjustment.
Ya know what though, i'm probably not going to do the Ragebringer quest because it's just a "pixel" upgrade over my current weapon.
Itt: mad bros, and nonfactors.
Also, just a quick example of why people are upset - I/We spent about 3 hours last night getting a raid done, ideally itemwise I was hoping for a VB or Pants upgrade from the mob. While we did this, LR was dropping/per kill and it has better stats than the raid loot I was hoping to have a shot at getting (and better stats than any item that will ever be on this server for those slots/my class).
Am I mad brew? No.
Can you be a real person and conceptualize an alternate perspective? You tell me.
Rogean and Uthgaard do this for free, so long story short hit the donate button and thank those guys for bothering to take time out of their holiday to do this for us. It's not our responsibility as players to agree with their decisions, however it is anyones right to post their opinion without getting flamed by tweens.

It is true that for certain classes the lustrus russet is better then anything they will ever have access to... however is that really that big of a deal?
IMO its not. However your millage may vary.
Is it going to keep you from getting a raid spot cause you dont have it? Doubtful
Guild spot: also doubtfull
Group spot: probly not
So all that happens is some people have a few slots they will NEVER replace. Also a few people that had LR dont feel as cool standing in EC tunnel.

I dont raid, nor do I have any interest in getting to the end game on an emulated p99 server..
Neither of us are right man, but I am the exact opposite.
Also, don't forget that Everquest, not unlike American football, are games of inches. At the end of the day the difference between my DPS and Otto's (fanged skull stilletto, 41% haste) is negligible, as is the difference from RBB to CoF etc. But you know what? That's the game we play, small upgrades at the cost of our sanity and time.
however is that really that big of a deal?

Personally I had a bunch of fun. Went LD a few times, a random death, but the mad running around the zone killing werewolves was fun. So some people got a few nice drops. Maybe they were a bit too good, but I'd rather Rogean and co. put in the time and effort to do something like this for us and mess it up slightly than not try at all. Nothing is perfect. And obviously, they aren't going to take LR/cryo drops back, so no point in complaining.
One suggestion for the future: I liked that there seemed to be 3/4 levels of werewolves, i.e. the 50's, the 35's, and whatever else. If it would be possible I think a max level to engage each mob would be awesome. I.e. max 40 to kill the 35, max 30 to kill the 25. This would allow some of the lower players to get in on the action instead of having it dominated by guilds with tons of 50's running around killing everything.
Perhaps this would also help with the ninjalooting, which btw was super fucking lame and reflects rather badly on whoever would do that. Ok so a ton of pieces were /ooc'ed as rotting, with locs, which shows awesome community spirit. Go for that. Or, a random corpse with no one around, go for it. A corpse with a group of guild people standing around waiting for the timer to expire so a guildmember can loot a piece, while you spam right-click? That deserves the piece being deleted and a week ban, let's be honest. I tried to find it in the p99 rules but couldn't, perhaps this should be added? From the EQ Play Nice Policy:
1.1 Play Nice Policies - Activity within EverQuest
1. You may not steal kills.
Kill Stealing is defined as the killing of an NPC for any reason that is already fighting or pursuing another player or group that is prepared to engage that same NPC without that group's specific permission.
The intent of this rule is discourage and make note of habitual Kill Stealers, not to punish those who honestly try to work together or those who make an honest mistake. Its enforcement by the EverQuest Customer Service Staff will reflect this philosophy.
2. You may not ninjaloot.
Ninjalooting is defined as taking special equipment from a fallen creature without the express permission of those who killed the creature if they are in attendance.
The purpose of this rule is to stop those who stand near creatures that carry special items and attempt loot that equipment prior to it being looted by the rightful owner.

While I agree with the prospect of finding ways to stave off ninja looting, I think the GMs were busy enough and couldn't watch 40 different fights in zone to make sure that no ninja looting happened. In the end, it was a quickly executed surprise for everyone, something that while frustrating, was enjoyable!
Good job, Uthgaard and Rogean! I wish we could've taken down Lycanthropy Bob but I suppose the zone just about had enough at that point.. ha.

I'm more jealous about missing out on seeing the hilarity and chaos of seeing 300+ people in EC than having missed any uber loot.

There were plenty of people I saw get more than 2 pieces of LR. I saw at least 3 people with 4+.
That's pretty ridiculous, considering how much I saw in my own camp unlootable from lag and/or scavenger ninjas, and the fact that 30 or so people who weren't lagging got like everything.
Oh thanks, all the work I have put in on my char and now a level 40 warrior outgears me...really fun stuff lemme tell ya.

I understand, but this is so frustrating I don't even want to log in anymore. I had drops in my raid I couldn't even loot due to lag, by the time I can loot stuff it's over and people have nearly full sets of this shit and 5 strangers were camping every corpse left in camp so swapping to loot was impossible.
What did they do more than I did to deserve 4-5 pieces of best-in-slot gear that I cannot obtain even though I've spent 40+ days played raiding to get such gear? It's infuriating that so much LR dropped and how poorly spread out it was, due to so little being able to loot or stay logged in.
I mean think about it, you gave out ONLY 5 guises and thats not even best-in-slot GEAR, how many pieces of lr went out? 50-70?
I'll stop bitching fuck it its your server yall do what ya want. I love this server, have since beta, but this is weak and i'm fucking hella bummed out about how this went down.

hey man, so they made a mistake and put out too much. it sucks, i agree, but i won a guise at the end. pre-nerf!
they need to make mistakes to learn how they want to run these things in the future, and i'm sure rogean and his gang of nerdites will use the knowledge gained from this session for future events.
that being said, there's some like 30 sk with almost a full set of russet, PM me when it goes up for sale please =P

The script that determined loot ran on more mobs than we intended. Yes, a mistake on our part, one I have admitted already. I've already said it won't happen again, and we can't go back and just remove items. There's a few things we learned from this event that we can use to make future ones better.
You can continue berating me or you can deal with it and move on.

Why not just put LR back in Fear so those who actually deserve gear like that can get it? 1 week. Kunark is coming you don't care right?

TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS :3
I don't see what the big deal is, most of the newbies that grabbed a bunch of LR will probably quit before the raid game anyway.
And even if they don't you have potential for well geared guildmates.

Lustrous Russet is a good event item. It was still being handed out in GM events circa 2003ish? Not sure after that.
The % was greater than it should have been, as Rogean indicated. But, statistically, its not that bad, imo. I never got a piece of gm-holiday event loot on live because I was never at home on a holiday :P
With the amount of players on the server, the amount of loot given out at this once-a-year holiday event.. is negligible.
Keep in mind, in contrast to live prekunark, we don't have a full brigade of Ogre newbies on the server with full suits of Lustrous. Prior to the level limit being added to fearplane, they were in there ninja looting and/or training to loot. Just an FYI/IMO, compared to historic eqlive, this event is nothing in LR distribution %s to players.
If the zone was handling 350-400 clients, that's what I'm impressed with. Last year's Halloween gathering caused zone crashes if player entities in the zone exceeded 130ish. Big difference.

Not to break up the ph4t l3wtz discussion but what was the content of the 'event'? Werewolves doing something or other? I was too busy passing out candy and running my haunted garage to take part.

This was the dumbest event I have ever seen take please. I mean really guys, handing out THAT much LR?
I think that this was a bad move overall. Your hardcore gamers and old-schoolers think this was a kick in the face to them. Having LR was something that was cherished, and special. Now when I see RandomNoob/Tank from a guild that was established a few months ago/RandomRanger/Shaman sporting a few pieces of LR, I'll have to think to myself "Wow, what a day in EC! you really worked hard for that LR!"
I'd like to see more Kunark development and less LR, thanks.
Sincerely,

No, Chronos isn't mine still. I was more arguing the principle, and although I didnt get him his LR, Jeremy/Majik, you both know well enough I was at more than enough raids to farm a full set if I wasn't a druid.
I was more mad at the idea of the Cryosilk Robes dropping, but its a moot point as no robes dropped.
Long Live P99 = ) Thanks for everything you guys do devs, and from what I did hear from intelligent people, this event performed a million times better than the Kithicor one, so props to you guys!
Edit: I guess the LR is a moot point too, as there are no more name changes, all the older players know just about everyone who had LR anyways.

Supposedly nobody except Karsten and some other IBer has a full set. I always sort of assumed one or two of our old players in Trans had a full set, but yeah, I couldn't say for sure.
