It boggles my mind how at time the EZ server has a population that rivals this server. I spent a bit of time there before I discovered 1999, and while it was fun running through the old world killing major bosses solo, the novelty wore off quickly. My query is, why do people play there, is the end game really satisfying or something, or is it turn on autoattack and afk for 30 minutes like most of the bosses I fought.

it does not rival here
we have 800+ active individuals
they have 50 individuals that 6-box all day

Never played there. What's the deal? Is the EXP like 20x or do you just roll a level 60 to begin with or what?
Well, there are more than 50 people that play on EZ. Its new and interesting, and when I got bored of P1999 as I await kunarks release, EZ server is my current indulgence. Plus, people bitch less there...

It's pretty much grinding - lots of it. At first mobs are gimped as heck and you get free epics and loot gear from end-Velious off mistmoore mobs. Lvl70 it gets to the custom content which is usually about grinding at zone01 until you have armor_set01 completed, then moving on to zone02 where you grind until you've finished your armor_set02, followed by zone03, et cetera et cetera et cetera. And since you need to box 6 a minimum of toons to manage to survive, you'll ofc have 6x as much grinding!
Played there some, there's not all too much challenge. It's just about patience to keep camping/farming.

I played there just long enough to get a character to 60(5-6 hours), now I use him to run around all the old world dungeons to learn the maps.
there isn't much of a threat in SolB with a lvl 60 mage, his epic pet dual wielding a Fiery Defender and a Ragebringer.
I ran around there, SolA, and CT re-learning the zones and soloing Fire Giants.
I intended to use it to learn Kedge, but the freaking EB stone takes fish scales (lolwut?)
to use so I never did.
There were alot of people that enjoyed it when I played, but I agree, there isn't much of a challenge.

You are. On EZ I give my mage and necro pets both paladin epics for the 100pt heal which also sometimes crits for 500pt heal.

Also, you can't give your pet weapons in Surefall Glade, must be outside of that zone for it to work.

You're right.. I forgot it was changed so that shitty noobs wouldn't hand their epic books to their pet.
Regardless, you never could give pets epic weapons before. So stop acting like its always been that way, and go /autofire, /pet attack & chain group heal your way to victory over EZ server.

I made a level 70 Ranger and got epic 2.0(which has 250hp regen). Anyways, I killed all the old world Kunark/Velious bosses and it was kind of fun, but then the novelty did wear off.
I think the main attraction is how much custom content there is. I have to admit doing the league quests was fun, collecting old world loot for a big quest. You can also do a RoA quest which has 100 levels. So you level to 70 a 100 times to get it.

Played a ton on EZ. I enjoy multi-boxing, and since I can't do it here I played on there for awhile... Got pretty bored with T3. Charm and RoA grinds are insanity. Charms being much worse than RoA. My main warrior has a lvl 43 sorc charm thanks to a double loot weekend a few months ago...
Have about 9 chars with full T2... (3 buff bots, War War Rng Rng Clr Pal is normal group) Killed one T3 boss then got tired of the grind. Haven't played there in 3 months. I don't like that the progression requires you to finish the tier before from Qvic on. I remember spending hours and hours trying to get my second warrior a plate helm outta Qvic. In her bags were all the molds and peices for T2. Meh.
However, it can be challenging if you six box without using MQ2. Gotta multi-task like crazy. The 1st time I killed Kronos with my six box crew (no MQ2) I was pretty happy. Sadly after Kronos the boss mobs are just more of the same every time at the level I was at. I heard the 4.0 boss was pretty tough, and Hunter was talking about t5 requiring people to work together instead of tank and spank.

EZ is a blast up until T3/T4 then the content becomes very dull and boring. I found myself making toons just to gear up with T2 cause it was in fact "fun". I quit that server because hunters idea of fun is to run around and 1 shot nooby mobs in nooby zones endlessly in hopes of of a piece you need for FG/CG or augs. There is no real challenge in the game once you get the charms high enough, its like someone said earlier auto attack and go AFK for 45 minutes. Its a great server for a while until you find yourself pulling an entire LDON at once for weeks at a time in hopes of a charm drop or credits for your 6 box which is required to do anything. Anyway if you haven't tried it its prolly worth testing out, its a blast for a while followed by mind numbing boring grind of low level mobs for charm and augs which determine your success or fail in end game.

There is no GM, if you need anything you better hope you have a SS or fraps running. Content is 99% copy and pasted. Polished? You mean like the birdbath eating epics and gear or server lagging out during a 50 minute shadow fight? Don't get me wrong the server is fun for a while but even hunter has said its still pretty much a "Beta".

Not to piss in your cornflakes but you guys acutally think P99 does not have boxers so ya your numbers are around 500-700 normaly -minus those boxers your probally 350-550.
Not everyone boxes 6 on ez real numbers are probally around 150-200 people.

Gonna chime in here and say something,
EZ has been around since 2007. The reason they, and any other server like EZ, are still around is because they have one thing above everyone else: The amount of uptime. This is why green's uptime is such a huge criteria for non-developers; they have established themselves and have contributed a stable place for players to play in.
Hunter has gotten Legends due to his population. Even though people 6-box, that's 100-300 players (600 / 6 or 600 / 3). Hidden Forest has even *less* than this, let's say every player on The Hidden Forest 3-6 boxes. That leaves for 150 players online at a single time divided by 3 or 6. That's a very small number in comparison.
Whether or not the content is good is a different story. I personally think Storm Haven, BotA, and Hidden Forest have the best content of all the servers out there right now. Out of those three, I'd say Trevius' server (Storm Haven) or Akkadius' server (Blood of the Akkadian) have the best custom content server hands down. If you log on Blood of the Akkadian, and even just see the tutorial, you'll see what I mean. The level of attention to detail on those two are tremendously good.
I think the only thing Storm Haven doesn't have that makes me not play on it is a general direction. Sure, there might be content that releases that is top-notch and quality, but without the 'umph' behind it that keeps people coming back to you (Which, mind you, EZ does a hell of a good job doing) it's why Trev's population has been so low, and it's also why BOTA has been increasing. Trevius knows this too, which is why he's making that extra effort to make new players come to his server and stay there. (by the way, check both servers out if you are looking for a custom experience. or hell, even the hidden forest too.)
Now, what *is* on Storm Haven can be blown through in about a month or so. Compare that to BOTA, and Storm Haven has a bit more content.
All being said I still don't get the appeal of EZ other than its grindyness.
Speaking of grindiness... I've always categorized server content like this:
1) Grindy - This is the meat and bones on what drives your population. This is about 50% of player rentention. They love to be able to do things over and over, as stupid as that may sound. It's why World of Warcraft's kill 5x rats, return to questgiver questlines work.
2) Raid/Other Player Interaction (PvP Included) Content - A bit less important than Grindyness, but can be tied into Grindyness as well. It is for that hardcore group of players that loves that niche thing, whether it be raiding, pvping with friends, grouping, or just social interaction in general. I'd say this is the next 25% of player retention.
3) Storyline/General Server Direction - This is even less important than grindyness, less important than server interaction, but as noted on project 1999 and a few of my personal projects... people like a good story. However, if you must forgo all story, and make content with no general direction, you gotta let the player know ahead of time that you are doing this. Otherwise, players are left in the dark until the server administrator says, "Hey guys, new zone!" at which point your playerbase dwindles down to 1-8 players (INCLUDING boxes!) I'd say this is about 15% of what your server is.
4) The first of the last 5% is, believe it or not, GMing, player interaction, and learning to deal with the players and receiving their feedback. You know you have a good server when the players don't critique the mechanics, they don't critique the server administration, and best of all, they are willing to help us, help you. This is noted in Vallon Tallon Zek especially; I've heard that the majority of PVPers do not even go here and wait for a new PVP server and then flock as soon as they hear about it. A majority of the EQEmu players on p1999 are ex-vztz players from 2008-2009 when Daxum handed the server off to the community.
5) Last 5% is innovation. If you do something that is creative, it may be received well initially, but unless it has a bit of 1, 2, 3, and 4, it will die a slow and painful death when players realize the only thing you've done is create a mechanic. This is apparent in Edge II, back in 2007, when I created the database. I made a bunch of crappy zones, and never expanded thinking players would not beat them. It turned out, due to exp mechanics, that people got bored of grinding. This is very small, but it can be major if you overlook it.
That wraps up my wall of text, just thought i'd chime in on what i've seen since 2007/2006 and recently of course. It also gives some insights on what I believe works in a server. I've done a lot of 4 and 5, while a majority of servers have stuck to 1, 2, 3, and 4.

true that. i have been playing there recently and just got my 1st toon to 70. very cool server with custom conent gear and quests. Not everyone boxes, although a lot do. You get a bot so it helps when your solo. The guild I am in is a single box guild, and there are others like it.
Also, very active dev staff and very helpful and friendly, i found the community very active and friendly too.

<3 Hidden Forest, so much to do, but it's not mindless timesinks like EZ.
Full arrangements of augs and gear, non linear
World Bosses
Headhunter/giantslayer quests etc
Zones based progression quests
2-3 zones for variety, each done custom for each level range/tier
6 raid tiers with multiple raid zones in almost all tiers
They even made leveling 1-70 enjoyable and challenging heh
