View Full Version : Why does playing a Youtube video fix my FPS?

Not sure where to put this, it seemed to be a technical thing so this board seems appropriate.

Back in the past I posted about an issue I was having with WinEQ2. Long story short, I was suffering some massive choppiness in my FPS after kiting in LFay for a while on my bard. I tried just about everything I could think of, including uninstalling and reinstalling WinEQ2 and EQ, but to no avail. The forums tried to help, but no one could figure it out. I decided to go on a hiatus until recently.

Coming back I decided to play without WinEQ2 instead. After configuring the game to work better (also using RAMdisk for my Project 1999 Installation Folder to fix those microstutters that nearly kill me as I kite), everything seemed to be properly functioning once again. I finally moved my bard onto the Bandit camp in LFay when it began to rain. And with the rain came the choppiness. It was back, and this time without WinEQ2.

The choppy FPS didn't go away with the rain. I was about to give up and quit P99 altogether at this point, but something miraculous happened. I was searching the internet for a cure to this problem, and decided to check youtube. After browsing youtube I came back to my EQ window and found that everything was smooth again. I didn't quite get the connection yet, but the choppiness would return again as I was kiting in LFay during the rain. Upon further experimentation, I discovered that playing and pausing a youtube video will fix this choppiness.

So... how is this a thing? Playing a video somehow makes everything work just right. Moreover, why is it the rain that screws my FPS up so badly it stays borked for days regardless of PC restarts and whatnot? I originally thought this was a Multicore issue, but I was already using the Multicore fix from Druxa's All-In-One-Installer. The previous problem with WinEQ2 couldn't have been multicore, as that program fixes those issues in the first place. I'm not even using the same graphics card now as I did back then (GTX Titan now, as opposed to GTX 560 back then). What is going on here?

For the time being, I now play a 10 hour video muted in the background as a workaround to keep my FPS smooth (as it turns out, fullscreen also gets a bit choppier during this issue, but the windowed mode shows the most severe symptoms).

TL;DR
An old choppy FPS issue cropped up again, but in base EQ instead of WinEQ2. I found that the rain (at least in LFay) starts the choppyness indefinately until I play a youtube video, which then fixes it. This doesn't seem to be a multicore issue as I'm using only one core with Everquest. When I used WinEQ2 in the past and had this issue, WinEQ2 was supposed to fix multicore issues anyways.

How does playing a youtube video fix this sort of thing? Is it a symptom of some underlying problem with my computer or graphics card, or maybe a problem with the game's engine? (I'm now using an Nvidia GTX Titan, as opposed to the GTX 560 I had in the past). I've heard about playing videos or media players fixing problems in some games before, but can't remember where I heard it or why it is.

Maybe some kinda performance limiting power option that turns off when you start youtube?

What kind of performance limiting option would that be? Something I can adjust in the NVidia Control Panel?

A friend suggested EQ was using my Integrated Graphics Card, but it didn't detect that when I checked the advanced display options. It still detected my GTX Titan.

Upon testing things a bit more. Running around LFay until I got the choppy back. Using GPU-Z to check my card's clock speeds and other measurements, I noticed that while everything is smooth I'm running at a Core Clock of 324 MHz and a Memory Clock of 162 MHz, with a GPU Load of around 35% to 40%. When the actual choppyness returns, the clock speeds stay the same, but my GPU load goes down to around 27% and never gets higher than 30%. Nothing else seems out of the ordinary.

It is possible my card is limiting its power randomly when I go through LFay, and then staying that way until I run a video. However, my computer already has a High Performance power plan set, and I tried altering my Graphic Card options to use Maximum Performance for Everquest but it didn't seem to fix it.
