View Full Version : 5 important traits for a growing guild

We founded Casual Scum to have some fun and kill people in the snow. Since our modest beginnings we've grown bigger than we anticipated so we end up constantly reevaluating our plans to accommodate our size. Since I don't like to do things half-assed I'm studying the different guilds, their structure, and their qualities/deficiencies to do the best job possible leading my pals.
For science.
List the 5 major traits you think are important to a growing pvp loving guild to be successful. You can list more than 5, mention which guild you think is doing the best job, and even offer some criticism.

Character progression
Character progression
Team player attitudes
Fair rewarding system
Guild progression
Pvp is a part of everything, but foremost people want to progress their characters. Stronger characters = stronger pvpers = stronger guild = more guild progressions = stronger characters = stronger pvpers.
And as a result your guild will look more and.more appealing as a serious contender and place for people to stay in when their needs are met, guild size growth/attractiveness.

Bottom line is common goals and direction. Whether it is to pvp, grief, raid pve, or whatever you have to have a flow you need people who want the same thing you do.
Respect for the leadership if your leaders don't have the members respect then the guild wont last.

forum presence matters
im not sure if im alone on this but i think an important aspect of a growing guild is that players shouldnt make death threats irl on the forums
complete abstinence from the forums doesnt seem to work either. threads like these that demonstrate you actually care are a good example of what can be done, but the next step is not immediately flipping a bitch when someone outside of the guild makes an abusive comment
to clarify, im not backhandedly implying CS did/does this. i'm pointing to other recent examples who i will not be able to quote due to thread deleted
i think this can be further summed up by saying you should be willing to gkick toxic players in-and-outside the forums even if they are good pvp'ers because fuck em

Unfortunately some posts can damage a guild's reputation or standing and I agree that a positive forum presence is absolutely necessary for any guild hoping to recruit and grow.
The irl threats are an odd thing to encounter here that I had never seen until coming to P99 forums. I have never encountered them on other online games but in recent years I haven't spent that much time on forums for games so maybe its just a online culture shift.
I doubt most keyboard tough guys could or would carry out the threats but.../shrug
I think its stupid on several levels if serious. You don't tell someone your coming after them not knowing who they are or what they know. Bottom line is there is always someone bigger and badder on the playground they just may not advertise it.

to give you an example of how this might look: when i was apping to empire i assumed they were going to run a quick forum background check on my names and find a bunch of silly things i said when i was still on the up-and-up and flying solo
i dont think my history would have really qualified for an app denied anyway, so someone may have actually done this
as for new forum accounts, or players that claim inactivity on the forums, you can default to giving them a free pass but make a physical note so if the truth ever comes out that in fact they apped anonymously by lying to you then you could deal with it on an individual basis
just my two cents. guard the doors of your guild a little closer than some recent new guild ventures

This too.
Nobody wants to join a guild that looks dead or doesn't have any players in their time zone. Unless you are perfectly content waiting for someone to log on to do something or port, and are realistic in your expectations on how far you can progress/doable content, then recruit.

1) Organization and activity. Make sure there is something to do as much as possible. Ask questions to your members, find out what people need, have raids scheduled, make them run smoothly.
2) Atmosphere that is easy to get involved. Don't allow people to ostracize others. If you see veterans that are loud mouths and believe they might be making the game less fun for newer members, do something about it.
3) Be mindful of the guild atmosphere for all levels of players. First priority is keeping the engaged and long term members happy with progression but also work on a mentoring system to help new players. This will help you sustain good numbers over time and fight natural attrition (quick raids that get a lot of lower tier gear, epics, leveling groups, etc.)
4) Listen to members but also be a strong leader with clear and decisive decisions. Do whatever you need to do to make sure people listen.
5) For a guild in CS position - If you think you have too many lower level ungeared players don't hesitate to say we are not recruiting at this time, especially certain classes, until you have built up the players already in the guild.
If you try to beat Empire at their own game they will win. People will just use you to get 60 then jump to Empire. Encourage guild members to help each other out so you have room in the lower ranks to start recruiting for better raids. Although it is tough, you want members to think of progression as a guild, not as individuals. If they feel accomplished by helping others progress you have a great atmosphere.
When you see an opportunity to really compete with someone like Empire pounce, recruit hardcore and become the new zerg, but be patient. It doesn't matter how well your guild is doing, you will have to also wait for Empire to start declining. If they never decline or get bored of being on top I don't think it will matter what you do.

The only guild trait that matters is how many bodies you can throw at your target. If you haven't learned that from 3+ years of R99 history then you've already lost.

Patience
Plan events around guaranteed success. ( losing makes people leave )
Never shit talk the forum ( See max for more info )
Portray a respectable image, and make sure leadership figures behave themselves accordingly.
Give everyone who wishes to start fresh a chance.
And in closing, promote healthy diets and proper sleep cycles with lots of fruit, fresh vegetables and exercise + Fresh air for long term everquest adventures!

Rule #1: Dont listen to this dipshit.
He's exiled from every guild on the box due to his autistic greed.

Don't let your computer explode right before a major guild merger.
Don't Guild with Lite before Velious
Don't quit after losing
Don't destroy a server with a zerg
and lastly can't mention this enough....

Doesn't matter what you play on p99, but whether you played on VZTZ man.

not saying i would ever play a vztz type server again, rogean is doing a helluva job spotting and stopping terpuntine's on his servers, it was just so much more cuttrhroat, i also very much enjoyed the aspect of nutswingers getting shit on @ vztz, you picked a side and you stuck to it, there was no changing teams back and fourth based on heartbrands algorithm when you were losing over there, i like it like that

Smedy youreally not fooling anyone, you say you want.more red but I haven't seen you pvp once in 3 years and you've leveled several characters to 60. You were also in TeamSpeak 24/7 while kate/ashley streamed always ready to log on a porter like a taxi service.

strong leadership
clear common goals
differentiating from other guilds in a way that appeals to enough people to realize goals
no overpowering clique
no member that tells potential cruits to get aids
