Is swimming skill bugged?
I've been swimming around in Qeynos for like 40 minutes and have not gotten 1 skill increase.
Want to get the skill up so I can do Bloodgill goblins and get the ancient coin.

Run around in circles in innothule swamp shallow waters.

Yes, "run". Not swim.

have you gone to the trainer and put a point into Swimming?

Are you just num locking into a wall? You won't skill up if that's what you're doing. You have to like do circular motions.

Yeah I did. I used practice points until it was in the 40s.

And I wasn't running into a wall. I held down forward + turn, enter twice to lock me into circle swimming.

Mine has been moving crazy slow as well (at about 110 from starting at 100 as an Iksar). I was wondering if it was because my low int/wis. Is the rate in which the skill increases based on those attributes?

They nerfed swimming so it goes a lot slower than it used to (referring to back in 2010). Skill-ups every 10-20 minutes now...painful...

Get an eb item and sit in a body of water, aint hard do chores etc while you wait

Try Kedge entrance with an EB item and swim in circles. For some reason I always got skill ups very quickly there.

Play in windowed mode and hold down left or right so your characters spins in circles, then click outside eq window and your char will stay spinning and level up while afk. You don't even need an eb item.

This actually still works as of a couple months ago, I skilled up 0-100 running up the corner wall at ancient croc camp in Guk. You just have to swim "up" the wall (your character will look like its hopping out of the water repeatedly).

Practice swimming while waiting for a boat (Freeport, OT, Butcher, etc). Yes, wait for a boat now and then!

Double bonus - if you're a class that can levitate, or you can get a DMF/levitate cast on you, run in any water you can find while you travel. Especially if you must do the dreaded North Karana > West Karana > Qeynos Hills run for some reason. Head south, keep your feet below the water, and run all the way west with your feet below water. It actually gives some minor purpose to running thru that barren wasteland called West Karana.

Edit: Forgot another hidden bonus tucked away at the end of the world! Go to Everfrost and just run up and down the frozen river to the east. No levitate needed. You seriously get swimming skillups running over the frozen river.

I do not condone this or endorse it and am only posting because I found it amusing.

I recently installed EQ on a friends computer to play at their house for a bit. I forgot to delete lavastorm nek etc. I had logged out of Lava and when i logged back in it was the new zone set up. Perplexed as to what the hell was going on I ran around the zone trying to find Nek, Najena, SolA and B or the druid rings, to zone into or port out of. During the period of running around for 5 minutes before someone pointed out my error, my swimming had increased as if I were swimming instead of running the whole time.

The easiest way I trained swimming was to swim back and forth along Oasis shoreline during downtime (especially during high peak hours and mobs weren't always available).

They nerfed swimming skill increases? I guess we can't have a server of over-powered "swimmers" running around and running it for others :)

I too find swimming to be absurdly hard to increase compared to what it was on the original EQ servers.

One thing I don't understand is how there are two standards to how things are done on P1999:

1. Everything must be classic EQ
2. Rule 1 is null and void if we believe it needs to change

my sense heading is going up at the slowest rate on my most recent character, than it has ever... its like at (7) and been bound to my strafe left for like 20 levels... its weird.

It is bugged, the rate of increase is confirmed not classic.

Just leave your toon on auto swim overnight.

Levitate + scale of wolf + autorun(swim) into a wall. You're looking at 5+ hours if I recall correctly last time I did it.

I did it in FV and also in the secret entrance to freeport there is a square water pit that works.
The more you know!

I got mine up to max in about an hour and a half a couple months ago by manually holding down forward+left in North Ro.

Didn't ever get a single skill up when I tried to num lock it.

I haven't seen this mentioned, but are you level 40+? Swimming skill caps out at something like (level * 5).

What I have always done on P99 is to autorun while swimming with the left ot ight arrow key held sown so I swim in tight circles. I think the key is to be doing something other than looking right at the screen--it is agonizingly slow.

It's been mentioned already but I wanted to rephrase it as clearly as possible:

Swimming will not skill up by just pressing auto-run against a wall while in water.

The chances of a skill-up are dependent on the character changing position in the zone (/loc ). There are all sorts of clever ways to have your character jostle about while afk.

I think the Timorus Deep firepots are a good way to both help and encourage players to raise their swimming. It's never wasted time going there because of the obvious time-saving potential of the firepots, and the length of the swim will quickly get you to (200) after only a few trips.

Also, I've found my characters with higher intelligence seem to increase swim skill faster and more often.

Did the auto-circle trick in Felwithe this morning to see how fast it went up, just out of curiosity. At 135 WIS and 126 swimming, it took a few hours but it wasn't as bad as the last time I attempted to skill up. Here are my timestamps:

Can confirm that swimming skill is time consuming to skillup. Usually 5-6 hours for 1-200.

On live 1-400 took 18!!!! Hours.

Another place to skill up swimming is in Innothule Swamp. Try the northeast corner. Just run in a circle in the shallow part for a few hours.

Forgive the crappy screenshots. Just wanted to give some proof that swimming, at least against some walls, still works. If it is based off of your /loc changing, it doesn't need to change very much.
