Why would anyone be willing to pay 25k for a barely geared 34 war? I'm being serious...what is the value here? Is it because it is warr class? Is it because it is ogre? Is it just that pp is worth a lot less than I had thought?
With free accounts on this server does anyone think that the wide-spread selling of toons for plat will upset the game in some way?

p sure he's getting trolled by that bid
otherwise someone is dumb
I'm definitely not pro-selling/buying of toons. Fairly certain it can only be detrimental to the server.
Guess time will tell?

most of the people who've been 50 for a while have huge amounts of plat. there's nothing else to spend it on right now, really.

It takes time to level toons.
It takes time to make money.
You can have a brand new alt without the work of actually leveling it through the boring early stages with a few hours of cash grinding.
Alternatively, you can play that toon yourself - a lot of people paying hourly rates for PLing - and end up spending a lot more money in addition to (hopefully, cough cough) losing the income of farming on your main.
That is why people buy toons.

The concept of eBayed toons being clueless noobs here doesn't apply. My highest live character by the time I quit was a 54 monk - I know what it was like getting him there, I don't have to go through the pain of banging the FD button endlessly to raise the skill to know what it does and how to use it, so if someone offered me a 50 monk on here for the right price, how would that be detrimental to the server?

It could be argued that if the culture is to PL characters (usually a very anti-social activity) to be sold for plat, then people will stop leveling their own characters and just farm plat to buy leveled characters and the lower level group game will suffer for it.

I actually agree with this.
Back when i was on live server,i've seen the pl and it made it more difficult to find a group of low lvls.
I also disagree with buying gear with real life money.
Both of these damage the ecconomy and give these guys a reason to not group in the next area to learn how to get gear from it.
The people who are low enough to also purchase plat with real life money are also too materialistic and play to win and no longer for fun.
Back in kunark and velius era,you had very few weapons and it wasn't about the gear,it was about having fun.

I agree they are materialistic, but who are you to say what is or isn't fun for them. Maybe buying that plat, and using it to gear up their character in awesome bought items is a lot of fun for them.

A much larger portion of the community actually *DOES* PL for plat, including PLing toons to sell. It's simply done in the least populated areas in the game, for good reason.
Does it hurt the current game? I for one see a lot of low-level people... and We've gotten and completed orders for characters in the 20-30 range as well. People who just want to get out of the worst part of the game and experience some of the more difficult and stable group encounters with some actual class-defining abilities.

Buying gear with real life money = RMT = against the rules.
And don't get me wrong - the game is still about fun. For some people, fun is having a high level toon and working on gathering gear for alts - for some people, fun is raiding with people you like ... getting the best gear you can on a character to do the most challenging content. Everybody has varying likes when it comes to having fun, so why hate?
Here is my take on the whole buying toons. This is really Pay 2 Win. Here is the thread that I posted to before I realized how popular it is to do on this server.

Why do you care so much if other people find it fun to pay Plat for toons so they don't have to do the leveling again?

We have a great thing here! Most MMO's now a days are all about Pay 2 Win. When you put it that way as long as it doesn't ruin the economy of the game I could care less. I have only been playing on this server for a week now, so only time will tell. :)

So you don't care... but you know.. GM commands are next? Cool story brah.
You do realize plat isn't exactly easy to get on this server, right?
What is the point if someone else has done all the hard work for you. What is the satisfaction in know that you bought your toon by farming in game plat and not be going the grind your self. What's next giving everyone GM commands on the server.

buying toons is a schmuck thing to do. Create your own characters. Like the cafeteria lady on the movie Matilda.."put your blood and sweat into it", and after it, lick your fingers.

i love how everyone conveniently continues to miss the point that you have to level up your own character and farm plat before you can even buy a character

It isn't that I don't understand why someone would buy a toon. It was the price tag being so high that surprised me (see my OP link for the auction of a mid lvl tank with mediocre gear going for like 25k).
I also think the question of how/if this behavior could affect the community at large is a fair one to ask (no matter what side you fall on the issue). My biggest concern here over live is that with totally FREE accounts what incentive do you have to not create a new account for each of your toons?
I think this is taking the problem much too seriously then it currently is, but if the problem does become community changing perhaps the devs ought to consider limiting the amount of accounts a single IP can have.

Whenever I think of selling my account I think of that episode of Pokemon where Ash trades his pidgeotto for some guy's raticate on the S.S. Anne. It would make me really sad to lose my bard :(

Oh, that's even sadder, because Butterfree can learn psychic and ice beam and shit. Wow, what an idiot.

I think that trading p99 accounts for p99 accounts and ingame money is fine. But when you start trying to trade things outside the game, like WoW accounts *ahem* or some other game, then it becomes a gray area.

Yeah, seeing as if i donate to the EZ server, get a mil plat... then offer trading?
Bullshit!
