View Full Version : Client Crash Poll

I was talking on IRC about this issue (http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5451) today and I was wondering how universal it is. I know a ton of people have the issue but it appears that not everyone does; if you don't have the issue, please give a short description of how you're running EQ, what your OS is, whether you're using multiple processors, and that kind of thing. Obviously the most desirable description is if you used to have the issue and no longer do.

The issue is basically that you'll be doing something in-game and then your client will close without provocation. If you're logging the in-game text to a file, you'll see a string not found error at the very end before the crash. This happens to me (and I think everyone who has it) intermittently - sometimes it'll happen twice a day, sometimes not for a couple of weeks - but it can be deadly and GMs are not supposed to rez for it (since learning this I'm no longer gonna /petition when it happens), though GMs sometimes have been nice enough to rez me for it (thanks, bro). I've tried a lot of things to fix it so far and have had no luck; I'm just trying to get a handle on how widespread the problem is.

I've had it happen twice in 30 levels. Both times while in combat but neither time against something tough enough to kill me (thankfully). Certainly not often enough for me to have a clue as to how to reproduce it.

I think i never had this problem. Running EQ on a macook pro, on a windows xp partition via bootcamp. Nvidia geforce something, intel core duo.

I crash when alt+tab'd and my char finishes loading. zone either zoning in to somewhere or loading into game. once the blue bar finishes its crash bandicoot. running super OP machine w/ quad cores, awesome gfx card, 8gb ram blah blah.

I've had crashes sometimes during loading screens, but this isn't the same thing, I don't think; I'm talking about crashes while just casting a spell or fighting something or standing up.

What kind of EQ install do you have? Do you use anything like EQLite, EQPlayNice, etc.?

Nothing else...just followed the setup guide for titanum edition :)

I run EQ in windows95 mode, because this fixed the dual core runspeed issues for me, thats all.

Never had a crash, occasionally had a lockup after zoning, probably due to lag.

Samsung NC10 Netbook, XP, gawd knows what graphics card as it's shared on the mobo.

I've probably been kicked 6 times in 25 levels. 3 times I returned dead.

The last time was last night. I was root/rotting a crag spider in EK, and I was medding when root broke. The spider was under 15%, so he was in run mode. I touched nothing, and it crashed to the desktop. I was still alive when I returned. I'm not sure if I got exp credit for killing the spider, but I was able to loot the corpse when I logged back in.

So apparently it isn't necessarily associated with any combination of key strokes. I had previously assumed that the scroll wheel contributed to it, since I crashed a couple times while using that to check for adds.

I'd love to learn if there is a fix to this.

It seems to acted as a band-aid for a lot of issues... I heard there's something to actually fix the problem in the works, though.

I've had this happen 2 or 3 times in 30 levels, but both times were over Halloween weekend, notably while I was kiting 20 or more mobs (didn't ever make it back alive, unsurprisingly). I've since stopped kiting 20 or more mobs at once, and it hasn't happened since then. I assume it would still happen if I gathered up half of EK like I was those couple of times, so I said it happens regularly. I dunno.

Win 7 64-bit home premium, geforce gtx 460, quad-core i5, 4gb ram etc etc

I run with the Max FPS set to 60, and this fixed a Permafrost lag issue I was having, but I still get crashes.

I had it on 60 and still had problems like you, so I dropped it down to 45 on account of someone elses recommendation and the crashes stopped. That might be the magic number or it may have been one hell of a fluke. 45 is more than enough for EQ to run smoothly, anyway, so maybe give that a shot?

This has been quite frequent for me. I've noticed no pattern and don't run the log.

CPU: AMD 550 Callisto Black Edition, 2 cores
GFX: VGA nVidia GTS 250
RAM: 8GB - forget the brand at work
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I can be standing in EC, running across a zone, in the middle of a fight. This happens at least once per 72 hour period, consistently. Sometimes it will happen several times in a row, i.e., the client silently closes, I wait, log back in, run around and begin playing and poof: the client silently closes.

What is the full string not found line? Things like that are generally helpful to diagnosing a problem instead of the usual OH MY GOD I CRASHED FIX IT

OH MY GOD I CRASHED FIX IT

I always assumed this was a client-side thing and as such... not within the bailiwick of you server coders.

Never mentioned it until this thread.

The thread I linked in OP has multiple people with the full string not found line; I didn't copy it down here since I figured you guys had already seen that thread. Here's one I got from my logs:

[Wed Aug 25 14:57:05 2010] Your Tainted Breath spell has worn off.
[Wed Aug 25 14:57:05 2010] ERROR: String not found. (-2139324287)

The actual number in the error message varies. Note that this happens at a lot of various times and doesn't appear to be triggered by anything in particular; the only exception is that it doesn't appear to happen when I'm just sitting there medding and nothing is going on around me.

I leveled a Mage to 38 and started getting A LOT of these crashes...no warning no error no nothing...so I switched to necro...still happens but atleast while fear kiting you have enough time to LD out before the mobs rapes you...Now if I could only get all the bone chips and weapons I gave my pet back that I lost due to this stupid bug. BTW Never happens on my main (cleric) maybe it happens more to pet classes?

Interesting theory, though I don't think I've noticed any class disparities with it. I don't play any pet classes, but it seems to happen with about the same frequency on my shaman (my main) and my wizard (my alt). I've had it happen on a bunch of other characters too, I just haven't played other characters for as long.

I pretty much never crash. I've gone weeks without disconnections or crashes.

I can't say for sure if it's definitely a client side issue though. The string not founds being huge negative number makes it seem like theres some memory corruption going on in the client somewhere.

Had it happen on each of my machines...
-- Dell e6400 (4gb, Intel 4 series, 7200RPM SATA, Win7).
-- Dell Precision (12GB, Nvidia 220 series, SSD, Win7).
-- Homegrown (Gigabyte MB, 12GB, Nvidia 9800GT 1GB, SSD, Win7).

No rhyme or reason. Two of the installs were independent, one was copied after the eqemulator setup instructions. I originally was changing comps to try and figure out the lag issue in Sol B, but the maxframerate fixed this.

FYI: North Karana!

A Level 37 Druid - even with crappy gear - should never die in N Karana.

They got me every second day and I don't even can enjoy the show. It don't load if I try to zone. After a "warm start" and rebooting the client, I usually log in naked at my bind point.

I gave up. Account was going to a friend.

Have fun.

I've never had a crashing problem in 2 years on EqEmu. Is it possible something goes wrong when installing on a newer OS? It seems most people having problems are running 7. I run vista but I just copied the EQ folder over from my XP system when it died instead of installing because my friend ruined my Titanium CDs when i lent them to him. Just a thought, that probably doesn't help.

where do I find the error log or whatever it's called?

You have to hit /log in game. Then it'll be in your "logs" folder.

Just got a crash running at 45 frames per second, so I think we can rule it out as the fix. Thanks for the suggestion, though; I'm willing to try whatever.

Provided the systems that are crashing are stable (MemTestx86+, Prime95 on balance for the proper duration, FurMark etc) I think the best course of action here before an all out debugger attachment, would be to get the CPU-Z (cpuid) output from the affected people, notably the SSE extension capability of the processors in question.

A clear-cut example:

An Athlon64 Winchester, will crash randomly with Titanium eqgame.exe
An Athlon64 Venice, will not

The differences between these processors (other than memory controller clock cycles and TDP) is most notably SSE2 vs SSE3. There is even a frame rate difference between the two processors, clocked at equal speeds.

Another issue I've had with Titanium that pre-dates Project 1999; Both InnerSpace and WinEQ2 under Vista like interfering with eqgame.exe's 3D offsets. The transition between server select (or disconnect text, or zoning render surface) often times grayed out for me (and cavedude at the time) under Windows Vista with nVidia 16x.x drivers, and ATI Catalyst 8.x. If you clicked that grayed out window, the exit code for eqgame would be 0 (operation completed successfully) in a debugger. I suggest anyone with older drivers, update to the most recent version they can find, even if it means adding a deviceID to a driver INF. The issue hasn't revisited me since I switched to Windows 7, and it never existed in Windows XP x64.

My client has been crashing (better described as vanishing) periodically since I first installed it. I've noticed that I encounter the problem more frequently in large zones than in small ones and less frequently the more times I've zoned or logged in other characters. Places like OOT and SK are particularly bad for me unless I log in another toon or zone at least once.

Windows 7 + i7 920 is exactly what I'm running on my gaming PC, though I have 24 GB of RAM and an nVidia GTX480 instead of an ATI 5800 series and I'm on the old C0 stepping instead of D0. I've never had a crash or unclean exit on that particular system.

Do you use WinEQ2? My eqclient.ini for comparison:

Anything differ? How about background processes, which anti-virus are you using?

I leveled a Mage to 38 and started getting A LOT of these crashes...no warning no error no nothing...so I switched to necro...still happens but atleast while fear kiting you have enough time to LD out before the mobs rapes you...Now if I could only get all the bone chips and weapons I gave my pet back that I lost due to this stupid bug. BTW Never happens on my main (cleric) maybe it happens more to pet classes?

i7 8 gigs ram, radeon 5870 graphics (laptop) (beast)

asus G73 series? me too, except I got the updated version with the nvidia mobile 460 GTX and the i7 740QM

I also get random client shut downs.

> Anything differ?

Definitely. Most of it seems unlikely to cause issues but there are a few things that are iffy. From a quick comparison, I had the Luclin models flagged TRUE, different particle filters set, shadows on, LODBias(me: 10/ you: 20), Realism(10/20), UseD3DTextureCompression(TRUE/FALSE), MultiPassLighting(1/0) and Max FPS(50/70). I'm surprised at what I had set for some of these but they are now identical to the values you are using. I'll do some testing and see if I encounter the problem with these changes in place.

I've only had an actual crash that I can't narrow down to something I did once every ~30 hours of play time. I recently started playing EQ in Ubuntu and it seems more stable. Although if I minimize the client it will silent crash/close on me, but this is a Wine issue I think.

Also I have always run with my MaxFPS setting at 59 (I have a plasma tv for a monitor and that is the refresh rate on it)

CPU: i7 920
RAM: 12GB DDR3
GFX: ATI 5870
OS: Ubuntu 10.10

This happened to me in Lower Guk last night (instantaneous crash to desktop). Luckily I was just running around with invis to undead on checking camps. I can only think of one other time that it has happened, unfortunately, didn't have logging on. I've been playing for over a month now.

I have had few crashes.

Most were the result of some other process deciding it HAD to open up a window and tell me something utterly important...like there was a Java update. Outside of these there have been a few others, but they are by no means regular and certainly infrequent enough that they dont impact my game decisions.

Myt PC is 6 years old and is running XP on a Athlon 3500+ with 2 Gigs of RAM and a Radeon X1950 Pro video card. I always run in full screen mode and I turn shadows off as that seems to impact performance, otherwise i keep pretty much everything else at maximum.

Not sure what else i can provide....just happy to be running smoothely.

Not gonna go through 5 pages of technical diagnostics, but I'll just say that my client used to crash periodically until I read to turn off texture caching. So try that and see. :)

My eqclient.ini for comparison:

imo that's the solution. Been playing on the EMU's here since early launch, and had tons of CTD's and other problems until I installed WinEQ2, and then the problems all went away. Even on servers I can multi-box, no more CTD's. Works for me :)

If you want to prevent client shutdowns turn off all particle effects. Every time I got a client crash I would get a debug error such as "cannot create spel1a.tga for particle system".

I was crashing to desktop about 8-10 times a week until about 2 weeks ago. Installed eqplaynice (it's free just have to register) and only crashed to desktop once since. Tried the turning off particles before that and it didn't change anything was still dropping.

Never crashed until today. Earlier today I installed Windows 7. Crashed while killing a hill giant in NK within 10 minutes of logging on. Died.

Trying to re-install WinEQ2 but it's giving me a "DirectX9 required" error before it even gets into the main program so I need to figure that out first. For now, just running in XP SP2 compatability mode.

I've been using WinEQ2 for the past month or so and have not had any crashes. I thought I had a crash with it earlier, but I wasn't actually using the program, just running it in the background. This may be the fix.

So far since installing Wineq2, I haven't had a crash. I've only played for 1 full day though, so I guess we'll see what happens.

My crashes are always when my screen just goes completely black. I can't bring up the task manager or do anything. I just have to hard power down and start the system back up.

I installed WinEQ as advised on this forum and haven't had a crash with it since. Seems it somehow does the trick. I only started crashing after downing Windows 7's Service Pack.

This probably won't help everyone, but I find that this happened to me when I played EQ2 as well - the solution for me is to reboot my computer every now and again...I generally just use sleep mode to shut it down, but after a week or so of doing that the crashes will happen all the time...something to do with RAM I think? I'm not too sure.

This happens to me very often in OOT while hunting Seafuries. I thought it was just some bug with the zone so i packed up and headed to BW. Ive been hunting in BW for a while now and it happened to me today for the first time. Thankfully I didnt get killed. I hope someone finds a solution to this!

I don't think this is a problem with the game engine or drivers or anything. At least not for me.

My client will close when I do something, like telling my pet to follow me for example today. As soon as I clicked on the follow button the game closed just as if I had clicked the X on the top right. It's almost as if whatever points to objects in the game gets messed up somehow and points at the wrong thing and the game closes because it can't handle it.

I didn't read the whole thread so apologies if this is a repeat. Right-click eqgame.exe, select the Comparability tab and set it for Windows XP SP3, and disable visual themes, desktop composition, and display scaling. I haven't had a single crash since changing these settings.

I've crashed quite a few times for no particular reason. But I noticed that it ONLY happens when in the middle of soloing a mob and not in a group. Actually it never happend in a group yet. Turned down/off this and that and still I crash in the middle of soloing.

I just took a death soloing in Unrest shortly after getting a max level pet up :(.

Looks like it is time to go grade papers.

I think this may be the key, it's only ever happened to me whilst kiting. In all the hours I've spent running from place to place, grouping and raiding I've never known it to happen. Basically it happens at the worst possible time

I've had it happen while grouping multiple times.

I must have had this happen 12 or 15 times since I made my necro in January. I have, quite surprisingly, only died twice because of this, and fortunately it was while I was still in my 30s.

I wouldn't mind it so much if it didn't cost me bonechips every time. Such a pain to crash when I have a max-level pet, and then log back in and have to spend 10 minutes and half a stack of bonechips to get a pet who isn't minimum level :)

While it does seem like the majority of the times (maybe 80%) this has happened to me have come while I was kiting something... this could just be because I spend a crapload of my time ingame kiting.

I HAVE had it happen when I was not kiting or engaged in combat, just not as frequently.

It happened twice last night on my enchanter. The first time my animation and I were engaged with 2 mobs. When I returned, I had fortunately survived. The second time it happened when I was looting.

I had a similar thing happen to me playing SimCity 4 last summer. I'd be playing, and the game would just crash. So I don't think this is exclusive to EQ.

The only REAL fix for this I've found.... is to boot my computer into Windows XP instead of Windows 7 before playing P1999 EQ.

If I play in Windows 7 x64 (No SP1 installed) I get random CTD. Could happen twice in one day, might only happen once in two weeks... but it will eventually happen. In XP, I've never crashed to desktop.

Both OS are using the same Everquest folder to play the game.

This used to happen to me a lot. Around a year ago, I'd crash several times a day which contributed to my quitting for awhile. I just came back a month or so ago and have put in several days /played without a single crash until this morning. Soloing the AC room in upper guk, crashed to desktop with no warning, came back dead.

When I started playing again I thought there must have been a fix on the server side because I wasn't crashing any more. Still using the same computer as a year ago, so I don't know why I went so long without crashes and then got one again just now.

This happens to me sporadically maybe once every 4 hours of playing. No error or anything. Just instantly to desktop.

Also, on weekends when the server population is > 400 I lockup while zoning about 1/4 of the time, and have to try about 10 times sometimes in order to log in (various errors at different points)

Never crashed like that;

Windows 7 x64
E8400 core2 cpu @ 3.00 ghz
GeForce 460gtx
4gb ddr2

Titanium.

I run WinEQ2 and have eqgame.exe to run in Win XP SP2 compability mode as administrator. I also installed the cpu fix and map fix from the Duxa package.

Hope this helps.
