Holy crap I feel like a noob!
They say "You never forget your first".
EverQuest was the first MMO I found myself staying up all night, putting things like sleep and food aside, because THIS time Najena might actually spawn. Or worse yet, The Froglock Assassin, up all night, and I decided "Ok it's time to sleep, I'll try again tomorrow" and wake up to patch notes that the mask is BRD/ROG only now. GAH! I knew I shouldn't have slept!
My standard Roleplay "Personalities" and names all came from the EverQuest days. I played on the Veeshan server from nearly the beginning, May or June of 1999. I had an obsession with creating a character, getting them to level 10ish, then creating a new character. But the one that I considered "Main" and got him the farthest was a Ranger.
Taelyr Silvernight, Half Elf Ranger, back in the days when Rangers were looked down upon, groups were incredibly hard to come by, and solo was pretty much impossible without ungodly amounts of Arrows (Before I was able to get my clicky bracers!) and luck. I actually found my calling with "Ranger Crowd Control", managing a pull and aggro with a variety of snares and roots to stick the baddies in a nice line waiting their turn. Ranger Mez!
I've long missed the days where picking a class and filling in a role actually was important. Today's games are so dumbed down and simplified for the current generation. Years ago I tried out another EMU that was quite interesting with a lot of great new features, but different. And a huge focus on 2-Boxing rather than grouping. I got that EQ itch a few days ago and went back, to find the entire server full of Raid level guilds and players with nothing to do but 2Box if you want to play anything lower level.
And that led me to P99. Filled with lower level players, that old school classic EQ feel. I feel like a complete Noob again. Sitting in the tunnel in EC for trades? Good lord old school! (Although on Veeshan it was North Freeport Bank for trades). No map, no compas, Sense Heading and MEMORY are needed! Love it!
I've started out as a class I've always been interested in since I love Crowd Control. I'm now Rouhbius, a Human Enchanter. Level 4 baby!
But undoubtedly, if I could find a like-minded partner or group or guild, Taelyr the Ranger might make a comeback. Right after I go get some Nirvana cassettes and put on some re-runs of Home Improvement.
