View Full Version : Casual player?

The threads on raid rotation got me wondering; how many people playing here at P99 would describe themselves as casual? For the purpose of the poll take it as meaning not bothered about epics/raiding/high end content/poopsocking etc. and are just as happy wandering around Befallen as they are the planes.

I think people playing on a 10 year old game's emulator are pretty hardcore. I'd say 70% of the server is more than casual.

I am casual, my necro gets about 1 yellow exp bubble per week.
It doesn't take very long to 'experience' classic eq ;) It's all the same shit with higher numbers for everything as you go.

I started a Monk a couple months ago and am only level 19. I would think that makes me pretty casual. I can't even imagine getting up to a high enough level to raid.

I consider myself as casual this time around.
As a casual player I think it's important to play a solo class if you ever want to get level 50. Obviously I picked a mage so that I can log on and just grind xp without having to look for a group and end up leaving it an hour later because I don't have more time.

To me a casual player is one who can forget about "the grind" and play for the fun of playing. I mean if you're casual, you're not in a top end guild, you don't care about raiding - why are you grinding to level 50?
I'm definitely in "casual" mode this time round, I play when I want to play, sometimes I kill stuff, sometimes I explore, sometime I shop. XP is just something that happens along the way.

Started in May and have one level 20 druid, one level 10 gnome and now one level 10 bard (currently leveling). I'm definitely not hardcore this time around. Wife and two kids means that EQ is no longer my priority in life - I'm not going to sit there waiting 5 hours on a 3 day re-pop, screw that.

I voted Hardcore based on what I'd like to be. :)
In reality I'm casual based on the fact that 90% of my online time is spent solo camping a static spawn. I'm sure it's bad luck but groups seem to be hit or miss for me.

When I played ten years ago, I was casual. I play it now because I still love this game, I love the zones, the races, the classes, even the daily grind of exp/plat.
I love knowing that if I want to travel from my home in Qeynos to Freeport to buy/sell in the tunnels, or kill Orc Centurions in Gfay, I have to risk life and limb to get there and make a serious time investment.
My name is Kaboombastic, and I have classic EQ Stockholm syndrome.

I consider myself casual for the fact one week I may play 30+ hours, then not play at all the next.

I'm curious what people consider casual? I base it on number of hours spent. Or is hardcore the people that go to dungeons to level over safer places like Oasis? Every day on my lunch break I check this site, there are around 500 people online. So there are a lot of people that have night jobs, no jobs, or don't live in the US. My assumption is over half the server is hardcore if not more. The hardcore people aren't voting cause they are off playing EQ.

it's hilarious that anyone thinks 10-year-old emulated content is important enough to warrant having anything other than a passing interest in it.

Chess has been around for over a 1000 years and still has plenty of dedicated players. I guess that's hilarious too.
I don't get why people refer to casual / hardcore as a mentality, they can even be exclusive from each other. I think the problem really lies in the word 'hardcore' as it easily has two meanings when referring to online games. There is the time definition of hardcore and the playstyle definition of hardcore. Casual is similar in that it has a double meaning. Either time definition or playstyle definition. That's how I define those at least...
Casual (Time) - Logging on maybe 3 or fewer days a week for only a few hours, or frequently throughout the week for smaller sessions. In any event, it implies that not that much time per week is spent on the game.
Casual (Playstyle) - Not being focused on character progression. Any MMO game's entire underlying purpose is character progression, consistent deviation from this would imply playing the game in a very casual manner.
Hardcore (Time) - Logging on semi frequently to frequently for long periods of time.
Hardcore (Playstyle) - Putting character progression as a primary goal.
I play casually, but hardcore. I spend very little time playing, but when I do so, I am playing it in a way that would emphasize character progression more than anything else.
There were times I played World of Warcraft hardcore, but in a casual way--logging on mostly just to speak to guild mates and help some people out if they needed it.
You can mix and match those definitions and their gradients to describe your own habits.

Which is why I put in the definition for the purpose of the poll, and put the word casual in speech marks; the thread was spawned from the rotations discussions.
You could describe Bob as hardcore, but other than the value of the goods he's not going to care where it came from or how many socks were pooped in to get it.

Casual, casual. I'll eventually try to get in on various raids since they are part of the game experience, but it's not a big deal for me.

Casual/social this time around... raiding for fun, if I get stuff great, if not, it won't be the end of the world. Don't want it to be like a 2nd job the way it got before I quit in 2003... otherwise I'll be single another 5 years. :P
After I quit in 2003, I was finally able to pursue other interests, like increasing the size of my handgun and guitar collection. I recently laid them all out to show you guys:

I was a hardcore raider when I played back in the day. I'm far more casual this time around.
