Hello, EQ P1999.

I am the third generation to start playing Everquest in my family. And I am starting this thread to introduce myself to the forum and members of P1999.

My grandfather was the first in the beginning. I think his character was Illeawk Kurieawkin, a human magician on Tribunal Server, that was partial to female dark elves, so the lore goes in our family.

My mother was the second generation and her character's name was Dolly Rainmaker, a halfling druid, that told me stories of kiting three rhinos at a time in a cold country. She was know to have an open personality and would transport other players around the different zones for free.

I will be the third generation. I am uncertain as to what character class and race to choose but I will continue to read the forums and watch the numerous youtube videos and follow live streams that give me some information in game play and what race and class appeals to me.

I do not want to ramble on, so my secondary interest which I do not hear much on in the videos is on Tradeskills and if it is worth the time to put energy in a trade to help your character with gear, food, magic, or wealth building?

I hope everyone had a good Christmas, and when I am able to acquire another computer <which mine died a few weeks ago> I will begin playing and hopefully be a helpful new addition to P99. I have some PVP experience in a group environment, but one on one still learning. <Working on a name as well. But, it most likely will be determined by which class and race I choose.>

Regards,

SaraRae

Let me know when you start playing. I have some low level chars to group up with.

Happy New Year!

As far as tradeskills at low levels, if you happen to choose a race whose hometown guards are killed for exp you can probably snag some loot to sell to the merchants and skill up blacksmithing. I would do this if you choose a class that can wear chain armor (warrior, paladin, shadow knight, rogue, shaman, cleric, ranger). Getting blacksmithing up to the mid 100s will allow you to make a suit of banded armor. It will take you a few hours and like 150-200pp but the armor will be good through your teens... I wouldn't try to resell it other than auctioning in the zones you happen to already be Exping in. The levels you gain will enrich you far more quickly than trying to do tradeskills at a low level.

Also tradeskills are useful for several quests at higher levels.

or wealth building?
Nope, definitely not. To get to the point of some return, you must make a considerable wealth and time investment first.

But for someone just starting out, a little time and effort into making your own basic weapons and armor can be enjoyable with little to no loss. Of course, an alternative to that is to gather the needed crafting material and have someone else make basic equipment for you.

But all depends on the class you chose, as well as what you want to craft. Examples would be casters often will take up spell research while rangers often raise fletching to a competent level. But say for a ranger to be able to make the best player crafted bows (as mine does), it takes considerable time, lots of mind-numbing clicking, and 1000's of pp. And fletching is far from the most expensive tradeskill to raise, and one of the few tradeskills that doesn't rely on other tradeskills for components.

Compared to modern mmo's, classic EQis very challenging, which for some that like to craft, this is the way it should be. The up side of this difficulty also means that crafted items are not saturated into the market (compared to modern mmo's), so those that do raise a tradeskill generally do make their plats back at some point.

As for choosing a class, maybe check this out http://wiki.project1999.com/Players:Newbie
The "what class should I pick?" section may be of some value to you. My tip is to consider FUN over WORK. Play what may seem fun to you rather than what may be some potential money maker. Every class has a potential to make money, and at minimum afford or gather gear as you play. Lucks!

Welcome! To me tradeskills on p99 are for downtime; when you feel like logging in but not much is going on. At least that is how I raised fletching and baking on my ranger. Tradeskills did not become very useful until PoP (correct me if I'm wrong). But they certainly can be fun!

I agree with pope. Tradeskills didn't become useful until after Velius when racial armor was introduced to the game. The one exception might be to get the coldain prayer shawl and / or get your pottery skill up to make gate potions to Thurgadin.

My memory is also a bit hazy, so I am not entirely sure those things were active during original Velius release...

Tradeskills are mostly useless for leveling and getting the best gear, but they do help at lower levels. The demand for tradeskills has actually risen since Velious came out. Here's stuff people want:

Tailoring: silk gear, cured silk gear, arctic wyvern, cobalt drake, black pantherskin, haze pantherskin, handmade backpacks

Blacksmithing: banded, cultural armor, skinning knives

Jewelrycraft: gold, platinum, and velium jewelry

Brewing: a brew for the Coldain ring quest

Pottery: Thurg gate potion

Tinkering: Rebreather, collapsible fishing rod, animated bait (and fireworks!)

Alchemy: SoW pots, shrink pots, etc

Baking: Stat food

And outside of those uses, tradeskills can bring a lot of fun! Brewing and baking in particular are more RP than the others. I've made Eggnog XXX for holidays, and back on live it was far more common to throw in-game birthday parties and hold weddings with birthday cake and wedding cake.
